Nature's cheats

Mary is digging in the ground for a potato, when along comes John.Seeing that there is no one in sight, John starts to scream.John's angry mother rushes over and drives Mary away.Once his mum has gone,John helps himself to Mary's potato.

We've all experienced similar annoying tricks when we were young-the brother who stole your ball and then got you into trouble by telling your parents you had hit him.But Mary and John are not humans. They're African baboons(狒狒).1.

John's scream and his mother's attack on Mary could have been a matter of chance, but John was later seen playing the same tricks on others.2.

Studying behavior like this is complicated, but scientists discovered apes(猿)clearly showed that they intended to cheat and knew when they themselves had been cheated.3. An ape was annoying him, so he tricked her into going away by pretending he had seen something interesting. When she found nothing, she "walked back, hit me over the head with her hand and ignored me for the rest of the day."

Another way to decide whether an animal's behavior is deliberate is to look for actions that are not normal for that animal.A zoo worker describes how an ape dealt with an enemy."He slowly stole up behind the other ape, walking on tiptoe. When he got close to his enemy, he pushed him violently in the back, then ran indoors." Wild apes do not normally walk on tiptoe.4. But looking at the many cases of deliberate trickery in apes, it is impossible to explain them all as simple copying.

It seems that trickery does play an important part in ape societies.5. Studying the intelligence of our closest relative could be the way to understand the development of human intelligence.

A.In most cases the animal probably doesn't know it is cheating.

B.An amusing example of this comes from a psychologist working in Tanzania.

C.And playing tricks is as much a part of monkey behavior as it is of human behavior.

D.So the psychologists asked his colleagues if they had noticed this kind of trickery.

E.The ability of animals to cheat may be a better measure of their intelligence than their use

of tools.

F.This use of a third individual to achieve a goal is only one of the many tricks commonly

used by baboons.

G.Of course it's possible that it could have learnt from humans that such behavior works, without understanding why.

Amazon is breaking into physical retail in a new way. The online retail giant revealed a new kind of physical store concept in a video published on Monday.

The store, called Amazon Go, doesn't work like a typical Walmart or supermarket. Instead, it's designed so that shoppers will use an app, also called Amazon Go, to automatically add the products that they plan to buy to a digital shopping cart by scanning a QR code(二维码). They can then walk out of the building without waiting in a checkout line because Amazon will charge their Amazon account and send them a receipt.

The first Amazon Go store is located in Seattle, where Amazon is headquartered. For years, there have been rumors the e-commerce company would expand its dominance from digital to physical shopping. Amazon began experimenting with physical bookstores a year ago, but Amazon Go may mark its boldest bet on physical ones yet. By removing much of the staff needed to operate a store, Amazon keeps costs lower than traditional competitors. It's also in a strong position to bring together data on its customers' shopping habits online and offline to make better suggestions in all situations.

However, Amazon's move deeper into physical retail shops comes in a sensitive political climate. The company could be perceived as being a threat to some of the 3.4 million Americans who work as cashiers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. On the campaign trail, Donald Trump repeatedly criticized Amazon and its founder Jeff Bezos for “getting away with murder tax-wise” and having “a huge antitrust(反垄断) problem.” Will the President& shy; elect add “job killer” to the list of criticisms?

Amazon's effort to launch a new kind of retail store predates(在……之前) the rise of Donald Trump. “Four years ago we asked ourselves: what if we could create a shopping experience with no lines and no checkout? Could we push the boundaries of computer vision and machine learning to create a store where customers could simply take what they want and go?” The company says on an informational page about Amazon Go. For now, Amazon is starting slow. The Amazon Go is only open to Amazon employees in our Beta program, and is scheduled to open to the public in early 2017.

1.In Amazon Go, people can ________ .

A. buy products by paying cash

B. buy carts without scanning a QR code

C. have no bother to check out and queue

D. use an app to wait in a checkout line

2.What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A. Amazon has dominated the physical bookstores.

B. Amazon can contribute to reducing the cost of staff.

C. Amazon manages to take the place of physical shopping.

D. Amazon can ignore each customer's advice in all situations.

3.The reason why Donald Trump repeatedly criticized Amazon Go is that Amazon Go ________ .

A. would result in a political crisis

B. would threaten the career of cashiers

C. may result in a huge antitrust

D. is No.1 job killer in the list of criticisms

4.The main purpose of writing the passage is ________ .

A. to introduce the Amazon Go store

B. to explain how Amazon Go works

C. to arouse people's interest in Amazon

D. to indicate Trump's attitude to Amazon

In many big cities, a lot of old people keep birds, cats, dogs and other animals in their houses. These animals are friendly to the old people and never leave them. So the old people love them and see them as their good friends or families.

It’s not difficult to keep these lovely animals at home. But you have to take them to animal hospitals to give them needles (注射), so they won’t get ill or they will make people ill. Now there are lots of animal food stores here and there. People can buy good animal food for their animals there. Old people can buy animal food on the phone or on the Internet. But it’s a little more expensive.

Sometimes it’s kind of dirty and dangerous to keep animals. They sometimes look dirty and smell terrible and can be dangerous. For example, an old woman in Shanghai lost her life on the street for her pet dog.

Maybe old people in big cities have many reasons to keep these nice and clever animals. They may feel lonely when their children leave. And these pets can be their great helpers. They are their good friends and help them in many things.

1.Old people love these animals because they are _________.

A. nice and lovely         B. can be great helpers

C. are not difficult to keep D. are friendly to them

2.If people don’t give the animals needles, the animals may ________.

A. be ill B. run away

C. not eat food  D. make people unhappy

3.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. How to keep pets. B. Pet animals in big cities.

C. Old people and their pet animals. D. Friendly and nice pet animals.
