About ten years ago, a young and very successful businessman named Josh was traveling down a Chicago neighborhood street. He was going a bit too fast in his shiny, black, 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE, which was only two months old.

He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and-WHUMP!-it hit the Jag’s shiny black side door! SCREECH...!!!! Immediately Josh stopped the car, jumped out, seized the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid, “What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?!” Building up a head of steam, he went on. “That’s my new Jag. That brick you threw is going to cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it?”

“Please, mister, please... I’m sorry! I didn’t know what else to do!” begged the youngster. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop!” tears were streaming down the boy’s face as he pointed around the parked car. “It’s my brother, mister,” he said. “He rolled of the curb (路沿)and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.” Sobbing, the boy asked the businessman, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair?” he’s hurt and he’s too heavy for me.”

Moved beyond words, the young businessman tried hard to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. Straining, he lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapers and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be OK. He then watched the younger brother push him down the sidewalk toward their home.

It was a long walk back to the black, shining, 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE — a long and slow walk. Josh never did fix the side door of his Jaguar. Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. [1]Having a cold is an unpleasant experience, and it is even worse when you have a cough and a running nose. Sometimes we need to see a doctor to free ourselves from these symptoms(症状), but at other times we can treat it at home. One of the ways that you can try is simply drinking lots of water.

[2] There are two reasons why drinking plenty of water will help while you are sick with a cold. The first is an important one. Being sick with a cold puts us at risk of becoming dehydrated(脱水的). Mucus(鼻涕) production and fever both cause this dehydration.

[3] The second reason why drinking lots of water will help during your sickness is that it can help thin the mucus in the chest, which in turn will make coughing it up much easier. The good news is that you can take in your water in more ways than just drinking boring water.

[4]Tea is always , and a good hot tea can also help loosen the mucus. Other good options include juicy fruits and soup. Chicken soup is always a good choice for sickness. One should be careful and stay away from alcohol and caffeine. One more great idea for helping with a cold is to use steam. A vaporizer(喷雾器) is a good choice, and a hot shower will help as well.

[5]If you drink around 8 cups of water a day while you are sick with a cold, you will be able to do away with that cough quicker, and maybe even get over your cold quicker. So next time you are sick with a cold and don’t feel well, drink lots of water, tea and plenty of soup.
