First, you ought to know that I’m “only” fourteen. My mother points this out often. I can make my own decisions when I’m old enough to vote, she says. Second, I should tell you that she’s right — I’m not always responsible. I sometimes take the prize for grade-A dork(呆子). Take last weekend for instance. I was staying at Dad’s, and I decided it was time I learned to drive. It was Sunday morning, 7 A.M., and I hadn’t slept well. I’d been up thinking about an argument, which I’ll tell you about in a minute. Well, nobody was up yet in the neighborhood, so I thought it couldn’t hurt to back the car out of the garage and drive around the block. But Dad has a clutch(离合器)car. The “R” on the shift handle was up on the left side, right next to first gear(档位). I guess you can guess the rest.

Dad’s always been understanding. He didn’t say, “Okay, little Miss Know-It-All, you can just spend the rest of the year paying this off,” which is what Mom would have said. Instead, Dad worried about what might have happened to me. And that made me feel more guilty than anything. I think he’d be a better number-one caregiver, but I can’t say things like that to Mom. To her, I have to say, “But Mom, Dad’s place is closer to school. I could ride my bike,” to which she replies, “Amy Lynn, you don’t own a bike. Remember? You left it in the yard, and it was stolen. And you haven’t got the patience to earn the money to replace it.”

1.The writer feels guilty because she ________.

A. made her dad worry

B. ruined the car

C. broke the law

D. didn’t tell her mom about the car incident

2.The main conflict between the writer and her mother is about whether she ________.

A. can make her own decisions

B. should live with her mom or her dad

C. should be allowed to drive

D. should pay for things she loses or breaks

3.The writer’s mother thinks the writer is ________.

A. too attached to her dad

B. too emotional

C. too shy

D. irresponsible

4.In the first sentence, the writer used “only” to suggest that she ________.

A. doesn’t want to grow old

B. thinks fourteen is old enough for some things

C. wishes she were older

D. thinks fourteen is an embarrassing age

When I was a kid, my siblings(兄弟姐妹) and I used to have ice cream for dessert.Every day, we would choose which ice cream flavor to have, whether to eat it in a cone or a bowl. Then we would happily wolf down our treat(款待) as fast as we could.

Once, though, when I was probably about 10 0r 11, our grandpa came to visit. Grandpa always had a unique view on things. On this particular occasion, my sister and I were making bets as to who could finish their ice cream first. With a smile, Grandpa said, "Why would you want to finish first? If you eat slowly, it will last longer. You should have acompetition to see who can finish last." Even now, I always try to taste my ice cream, but of course this is about more than just dessert.

Too often, kids want to scramble(争夺) for more, whether it's more ice cream, more toys, or more friends. This habit persists into our adult years, and we end up constantly scrambling for more. We never develop the skill of appreciating what we have. If we learn to recognize this pattern and change it, we can raise our kids a little differently, giving them the tool of tasting their proverbial dessert, which could lead to a happier life for them.

What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the opportunity to enjoy what's in front of you, the pleasure will last longer and be more rewarding than if you rush through life always trying to get the next treat. It's a lesson that, I think, has made my adult life happier, as well. These days, when I want something, I wait as long as I can before I allow myself to have it. Then, when I finally get it, I make sure to treasure it as long as possible, because I know that, no matter what it is, it will be gone all too soon.

The rain had continued for a week and the flood had created a big river which were running by Nancy Brown’s farm. As she tried to gather her cows to a higher ground, she slipped and hit her head on a fallen tree trunk. The fall made her unconscious(昏迷) for a moment or two. When she came to, Lizzie, one of her oldest and favorite cows, was licking(舔) her face.

At that time, the water level on the farm was still rising. Nancy gathered all her strength to get up and began walking slowly with Lizzie. The rain had become much heavier, and the water in the field was now waist high. Nancy’s pace got slower and slower because she felt a great pain in her head. Finally, all she could do was to throw her arm around Lizzie’s neck and try to hang on. About 20 minutes later, Lizzie managed to pull herself and Nancy out of the rising water and onto a bit of high land, which seemed like a small island in the middle of a lake of white water.

Even though it was about noon, the sky was so dark and the rain and lightning was so bad that it took rescuers more than two hours to discover Nancy. A man from a helicopter(直升飞机) lowered a rope, but Nancy couldn’t catch it. A moment later, two men landed on the small island from a ladder in the helicopter. They raised her into the helicopter and took her to the school gym, where the Red Cross had set up an emergency shelter.

When the flood disappeared two days later, Nancy immediately went back to the “island.” Lizzie was gone. She was one of 19 cows that Nancy had lost in the flood. “I owe my life to her,” said Nancy with tears.

“I’d like to be at a healthier weight,” a friend told me. “But we just don’t have the money to buy expensive diet foods and there isn’t enough money to join a gym.” Many people feel that way — that a healthy diet and exercise plan is out of reach because of their high cost. Don’t lose hope! We’ll be looking at ways to make healthy choices without spending too much money.

First you don’t need to buy the expensive pre-prepared “diet foods.” Back in the early 1970s when I started housekeeping, 90% of the food I bought was ingredients. Very few things were preprocessed (预处理的). Now 90% of the food you find in the store is quick food. That’s a bad thing.

Quick foods like boxed “just add hamburger” meals have had the fiber (纤维) removed to make them faster to prepare. Take a look at the label (标签) on that box. It often has low numbers listed under “fiber” because fiber takes longer to digest. If the low fiber meal is digested, the result is that your body begins to store fat. Besides, your body is short of nutrients (营养物质). You will be driven to eat more to try to make up for the low quality of the food you are eating.

And then there are the chemicals the producers add to the quick meals to make them palatable. If not, the stuff would taste like cardboard and you wouldn’t enjoy it. However, these chemicals certainly aren’t good for your health.

What’s the answer? Buy whole ingredients and give up the expensive, low nutrition, processed foods. Do the cooking yourself and you will have control over what is in your food — and it will cost less, too.

1. People who find it hard to get a healthier weight think _____.

A. they had too much diet food

B. they didn’t make a detailed plan

C. they have no time to do exercise in gym

D. they can’t afford diet food and to exercise in gym

2.The author doesn’t like quick food mainly because _____.

A. it contains too much fat

B. it makes people eat more

C. it has low fiber

D. it takes longer to digest

3.The underlined word “palatable” in Paragraph 4 means _____.

A. fresh B. delicious

C. healthy D. poor

4.The author suggests in the text that people should _____.

A. control the amount of food

B. eat more processed foods

C. cook food for themselves

D. choose cheap ingredients
