    根据短文内容, 从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项, 选项中有一项为多余项。
A. Perseverance
B. Respecting
C. American morals
D. Honesty in American morals
E. Moral values in America
F. Compassion
1.________
Do Americans have any morals? That’s a good question. Many people insist that ideas about right
and wrong are merely personal opinions. Some voices, though, are calling Americans back to traditional
moral values. William J. Bennett, former U.S. Secretary of Education, edited The Book of Virtues in
1993 to do just that. Bennett suggests that great moral stories can build character. The success of Bennett’s book shows that many Americans still believe in moral values. But what are they?
2.________
To begin with, moral values in America are like those in any culture. In fact, many aspects of morality
are universal. But the stories and traditions that teach them are unique to each culture. Not only that, but
culture influences how people show these virtues.
3.________
One of the most basic moral values for Americans is honesty. The wellknown legend about George
Washington and the cherry tree teaches this value clearly. Little George cut down his father’s favorite
cherry tree while trying out his new hatchet. When his father asked him about it, George said, “I cannot
tell a lie. I did it with my hatchet.” Instead of punishment, George received praise for telling the truth.
Sometimes American honesty-being open and direct-can offend people. But Americans still believe
that “honesty is the best policy.”
4.________
Another virtue Americans respect is perseverance. Remember Aesop’s fable about the turtle and the
rabbit that had a race? The rabbit thought he could win easily, so he took a nap. But the turtle finally won
because he did not give up. Another story tells of a little train that had to climb a steep hill. The hill was so
steep that the little train had a hard time trying to get over it. But the train just kept pulling, all the while
saying, “I think I can, I think I can.”At last, the train was over the top of the hill. “I thought I could, I
thought I could, ”chugged the happy little train.
5.________
Compassion may be the queen of American virtues. The story of “The Good Samaritan” from the
Bible describes a man who showed compassion. On his way to a certain city, a Samaritan man found a
poor traveler lying on the road. The traveler had been beaten and robbed. The kind Samaritan, instead
of just passing by, stopped to help this person in need. Compassion can even turn into a positive cycle.
In fall 1992, people in Iowa sent truckloads of water to help Floridians hit by a hurricane. The next
summer, during the Midwest flooding, Florida returned the favor. In less dramatic ways, millions of
Americans are quietly passing along the kindnesses shown to them.

Crosstalk, a traditional form of comic storytelling, is making a comeback in China's teahouses and
theaters.
Audiences can laugh the night away every Saturday at the Qianxiangyi Teahouse in Tianjin,
entertained by the apprentices (学徒) of Hou Baolin, Ma Sanli or Yin Shoushan -- all leading crosstalk
artists of years past -for only 20 yuan (US$2.40). The success in Tianjin has also given motivation to the
rejuvenation (复活) of crosstalk in Beijing and other places.
Although the art form originated in Beijing in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Tianjin became a place
where rising stars developed their styles and new pieces were tried out. The city was famous for the
quality of its crosstalk performances.
"We only want to bring the traditional pieces back to the audiences, helping them to learn their charms
and definitions," said Yin Xiaosheng, head of the Zhongyou Arts Troupe.
Known in Chinese as xiangsheng (literally, "face and voice"), crosstalk was the main form of comedy
throughout most of the 20th century. In the old days in Tianjin and elsewhere, temple fairs and markets
were the main places for crosstalkers to perform, although they occasionally also appeared in teahouses
or theaters.
Usually crosstalk pieces draw on every aspect of Chinese culture, from history and folk tales to
contemporary social issues. Although there are hundreds of pieces in the traditional works, they are
constantly rewritten to suit the times and the audience, while new works are written as well. This is one
of the features that have made crosstalk a populist(平民化) art form throughout its history.
"Crosstalk was in the doldrums with competition from other art forms, especially TV," said Wang
Xiaochun, headmaster of the Northern Storytelling Arts School of China (NSAS). "But it has regained
its status with crosstalk fans, especially young people, growing aware of its rare qualities." The
reawakening of interest in the traditional art is going beyond merely watching and listening for many.
"More and more students are coming to NSAS to study crosstalk, including some girl students," said
Wang, "They are sure that crosstalk will have a strong market."

4. From the passage we can predict the future of crosstalk lies in______.
A. making up a variety of traditional pieces
B. having advantages over other media

Tranquility, relaxation and the scent of incense (香烛香味), this is Guozijian Street, a street combining Beijing's past and present. Housing the Confucian Temple in the east and the Imperial College in the west,
the street gradually took shape some 700 years ago.
Guozijian Street connects to the Lama Temple in the east. There are many sandalwood incense shops at the street entrance. The air is full of scent. Yet gradually, the scent of ancient books takes advantage as one explores further down the street and towards the Confucian Temple and Imperial College. The
Confucian Temple is where the worships to Confucius were attended during the Yuan, Ming and Qing
Dynasties (1271-1911). Gnarled cypress trees outside the gate create thick shade from the sun. On each
side of the gate stands a huge stone pole written in Mandarin and Mongolian ordering all horse riders, even the emperor, to get off their horses. The glazed yellow tiles on the roof show the temple's past dignity.
Beside the Confucian Temple is the Imperial College, the highest educational institution during the Yuan,
Ming and Qing Dynasties, which was once the dream destination for ancient scholars. The neighboring
Guanshuyuan Hutong is no different than other Beijing hutongs, except for its unique colors. The royal red of the Imperial College wall is a stark contrast with the typical grey of common people's residences.
Serenity is very common over Guozijian Street. The occasional noise aroused by visitors is quickly
absorbed by the quiet atmosphere. Even time slows down on this ancient street.
The leafy and green cypress trees along the street protect it from the bother of the busy city. These tall and silent plants add to the dignity and elegance of the street. Living houses still preserve the ancient and
attractive style of old Beijing, which is hardly seen elsewhere nowadays. Looking through the red gate
where the paint has already started to come off, one may find some older people sitting leisurely in the sun
in the courtyards. It seems that living next door to the sage (圣人) has brought them the wisdom to
dismiss all kinds of worries.

1. The 2nd paragraph mainly talks about _______.

A. the Lama Temple
B. the Confucian Temple
C. a sight of a street
D. a street of incense

2. The underlined word "serenity" in the 3rd paragraph roughly means _______.

A. being calm and peaceful
B. being silent
C. being still but noisy
D. being full of noise

3. It can be inferred from the 4th paragraph that Guozijian Street is _______   .
A. busy
B. relaxing
C. natural

4. The air in Guozijian is fragrant because _______   .

A. the shops give off a smell
B. incenses in the shop and ancient books give off lots of scent

claim to inventing.
     2. ________
The city was founded in 1718, at a time when France owned that part of North America. Part of its

traditions. By the mid18th century, black people  in New Orleans were gathering socially on Sundays
at a special market outside the city, where they were able to remember and practice their traditional
African dance and drumming music. The roots of jazz can be traced to these events.

a mixture of styles began to perform in street festivals. Europeans came to listen and contribute and the
