【题目】One night in February 1962, John H. Glenn. Jr., flew over Australia. The man in the Mercury(水星) capsule(宇宙飞行容器)was alone, but friendly voices reached him by radio. On the dark land 100 miles below, he saw a sprinkling of light. They marked the city of Perth, where people had turned on their lights as a greeting to him.

In Friendship7, Glenn radioed, “ The lights show up very well. Thank for everybody for turning them on.” His capsule raced on to the east.

During his three orbits of the earth, Glenn could always reach one of eighteen tracking stations. Some of them were on ship at sea. Others were in the United States.

Many of the stations had been built with the help of other countries. These countries allowed Americans to bring in radio equipment and set it up. Without the help of such lands as Nigeria(尼日利亚), Zanzibar(尚巴西,坦桑尼亚领土的一部分), and Mexico, there would have been breaks in the worldwide radio network.

【题目】The Mayan Indians lived in Mexico for thousands of years. The Maya were so bright that they achieved a lot. They had farms, temples and cities with many buildings. They knew much about nature and the world around them. This knowledge helped them to live a better life than most people of that time.

In ancient Mexico there were many small clearings in the forest. In each clearing was a village with fields of crops around it. The Maya planted seeds after they cleared the land. A farmer was able to grow crops that produced for several people. But not every Maya had to be a farmer. Some were builders or priests (祭司).

The Maya believed in many gods. They built large temples to honor them. Skillful workers built cities around these temples. It was difficult because they had to carry all of the building materials themselves. Today, many of these ancient Mayan cities and temples are still standing.

Although the Maya worked hard to build the beautiful cities, very few of them lived in them. Usually, only the priests lived in the cities. The other people lived in small villages in the forests. Their houses were much simpler. Most Maya lived a simple life close to nature.

Around the year 800, the Maya left their villages and beautiful cities, never to return. No one knows why this happened. They may have died from a deadly disease. They may have left because the soil could no longer grow crops. The lost secrets of the Maya are still beyond the reach of modern people. They are still one of our greatest mysteries.

1The Maya lived better than most people of their times because ______.

A. they had skillful workers

B. they believed in many gods

D. they could measure time correctly

2It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

C. the ancient Mayan people led a happy life in the cities

D. the ancient Mayan people died from a serious disease

3The underlined word “They” in the last paragraph refers to ______.

A. the Mayan people B. the Mayan villages

C. the Mayan cities D. the lost secrets of the Maya

4Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?

A. The Cities of the Maya B. The Belief of the Maya

Saturday, March 24th

We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is

cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in

the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.

Tuesday, March 27th

Bangkok is wonderful and surprising! The places are interesting. We visited

Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later

today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in

Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.

Friday, March 30th

Our trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in

the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life-no computers or

phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say

"hello". Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best

way to show our kindness. I feel good here and hope to be able to come back

next year.
