Humans are social beings. We enjoy being understood and accepted. Unfortunately, Western culture values individual achievement more than personal relationships. We're better at finding career success than at connecting with other people. As a result, our relationships often suffer. Here are tips for better relationships with everyone.

Everyone wants to share the newest story, the great idea they have and their thoughts and advice. When talking to someone, hear him/her out without judgment or interruption. Focus on what's being said and do your best to understand.

All relationships require trust. Having no trust means worrying about what others are doing, thinking and saying when you're not around. It means monitoring and controlling someone instead of enjoying them.

You probably feel let down at the time when you fail to tell others what you want and then blame them for not reading your mind. So when you want something -- or want to share something -- be honest about it. Expressing your desires might feel uncomfortable, but it gives the other person a fighting chance to give you what you really want.

We're always looking to gain something from other people: positive emotions, knowledge, gifts. This is fine:  humans are selfish by nature. The problem is, you can't just take and take in relationships. If you don't give back something of equal or greater value, there's no reason for other people to stay around you. In today's world, it's always about "me, me, me." This is why our relationships with friends, family are weak. You can't connect with other people if you're thinking about yourself all the time.

The best way to build better relationships with everyone is through positive actions.

“Happy New Year!” Everyone will greet each other with these words as they meet each other on New Year’s Day. But it wasn’t always January 1 that marked the New Year.

At least 4,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians marked the changing of the year. In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River flooded, enriching farmers’ fields. This happened at the end of September.

The Babylonians held a festival in the spring, on March 23, to kick off the next farming cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days.

The date January 1 was picked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 46 BC. The month of January originates from the Roman god, Janus. He is pictured with two heads. One head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new. The new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day.

In Vietnam, the New Year holiday happens in February. They buy fresh flowers and a peach blossom to put in their house, following the Vietnamese custom.

Thailand has its specific New Year’s date; it’s different from the normal calendar. The Thai New Year is celebrated on April 13. On this day, Thai people play with water, throwing it on each other. It is intended to bring good luck during the New Year ahead.

In China, the more favorable New Year is usually celebrated in February according to lunar calendar (阴历). On New Year’s Eve, all family members sit together at table, enjoying lots of auspicious foods such as dumplings, chicken to bring good luck.

Television, the most popular and persuasive of modern technologies, marked by rapid change and growth – is moving into a new era, an era of extraordinary sophistication and versatility, which promises to reshape our lives and our world. It is an electronic revolution of sorts, made possible by the marriage of television and computer technologies.

The world “television”, derived from its Greek (tele: distant) and Latin (vision: sight) roots, can literally be interpreted as sight from a distance. Very simply put, it works in this way: through a sophisticated system of electronics, television provides the capability of converting an image (focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) into electronic impulses, which can be sent through a wire or cable. These impulse, when fed into a receiver (television set), can then be electronically reconstituted into that same image.

Television is more than just an electronic system, however. It is a means of expression, as well as a vehicle for communication.

The field of television can be divided into two categories determined by its means of transmission. First, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through broad – based airwave transmission of television signals. Second, there is no broadcast television, which provides for the needs of individuals or specific interest groups through controlled transmission techniques.

Traditionally, television has been a medium of the masses. We are most familiar with broadcast television because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to what exists today. During those years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by the broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBD, who have been the major purveyors(供应商)of news, information, and entertainment. These giants of broadcasting have actually shaped not only television but our perception of it as well. We have come to look upon the picture tube as a source of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium as the passive viewer.

When we think about education and language learning, we are most likely to think of books. Although there are lots of language learning methods, many people still prefer to learn only by using books. So what are the advantages of learning a language from a book?

Here are its advantages: firstly, you can take language books wherever you go conveniently and you can use them whenever you want. Secondly, they are easy to follow because the courses in them are usually planned for you in strict order starting from the most basic concepts to the more complex. Thirdly, if you are unsure of something, you can continue to work on it as quickly as you like. Lastly, books are likely to have a lot of vocabulary and a lot of topics so you will get great value out of a book with lots of materials in it.

Using books to study a language has disadvantages, too. All textbooks and dictionaries usually include some kind of pronunciation guide. These are helpful when there is no other way to learn, but this can't help you practice your pronunciation. With an audio method, you can compare your pronunciation to that of a native speaker. Besides, some words are spoken faster in one sentence or slower in another, so the pronunciation of a word may change according to the emotion or feeling you want to convey. Also, books can’t actually help you hear the language with its unique rhythms spoken by native speakers. With an audio language learning method, you will be able to hear and understand the language better.

Therefore, if you can supplemental(补充)your book with some other language tools, such as audio tapes, internet radio or resources such as music or television, you will have a much better chance of understanding the books' pronunciation guide and using it to get a good grasp of the spoken language.

For more than twenty years scientists have been seeking to understand the mystery of the‘‘sixth sense"of direction.By trying out ideas and solving problems one by one, they are now getting closer to one answer.

One funny idea is that animals might have a built-in compass(指南针).

Our earth itself is a big magnet(磁体).So a little magnetic needle that swings freely lines

itself with the big earth magnet to point north and south. When people discovered that idea about athousand years ago and invented the compass,it allowed sailors to navigate (航海)on oceanvoyages, even under

cloudy skies.

Actuallly the idea of the living compass came just from observing animals in nature.

Many birds migrate twice a year between their summer homes and winter homes. Some of them fly for thousands of kilometers and mostly at night.Experiments have shown that some birds can recognize star patterns. But they can keep on course even under cloudy skies. How can they do that?

A common bird that does not migrate but is great at finding its way home is the homing pigeon. Not all pigeons can find their way home. Those that can are very good at it,and they have been widely studied.

One interesting experiment was to attach little magnets to the birds’ heads to block their

magnetic sense—just as a loud radio can keep you from hearing a call to dinner. On sunny days, that did not fool the pigeons.Evidently they can use the sun to tell which way they are going. But on cloudy days, the pigeons with magnets could not find their way.It was as if the magnets had blocked their magnetic sense.

Similar experiments with the same kind of results were done with honeybees. These insects also seem to have a special sense ot direction.

In spite of the experiments, the idea of an animal compass seemed pretty extraordinary. How

would an animal get the magnetic stuff for a compass.

An answer came from an unexpected source.A scientist was studying bacteria that live in the

mud of ponds and marshes. He found accidentally little rod-like bacteria that all swam together in

one direction—north.

Further study showed that each little bacterium had a chain of dense particles inside, which

proved magnetic. The bacteria had made themselves into little magnets that could line up with the

earth’s magnet.

The big news was that a living thing, even a simple bacterium, can make magnetite. That led

to a search to see whether animals might have it.. By using a special instrument called magnetometer, scientists were able to find magnetite in bees and birds, and even in fish.In each

animal, except for the bee.the magnetic stuff was always in or closer to the brain.

Thus.the idea of a built—in animal compass began to seem reasonable.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how.

1). Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you can have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time fro entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

2). Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room. Free from everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

3). Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what your teachers say.

4). Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teachers mentioned in class. If you want to know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material in advance. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.

5). Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.

There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
