It’s no secret that we’re into computers. And why not? On the Internet, we can catch up on news, plan vacations, pay bills and make friends. But for some, once they type their way onto the Internet, they just can’t stop.Internet addiction(沉溺)can happen to anyone who’s lonely, and that includes two surprising groups:college students and homemakers.Away from their families, homesick and overwhelmed, many college students seek connections.Their brightest freshmen were failing to maintain good grades, they realized half were using the Internet excessively(过度地)!They couldn’t forbid it, because students needed it for schoolwork. So they provided counseling(咨询)to help students adjust to college-and a year later, the number of web junkie flunkers(不及格的学生)dropped by half. And homemakers are prone to(有……的倾向)addiction too, if they’re shy.But the more on-line connection vulnerable(易受伤害的)people make, the more they may neglect the connections they hold in real life.In recent study,51 percent of men and 42 percent of women named the Internet as one of the reasons they were not getting enough sleep! And 68 percent of Internet addicts surveyed(被调查的)said their on-line usage was destroying their relationships. The person will retire to the computers at night instead of the bedroom and to cyberspace(网络空间)relationships with strangers instead of communication with families. There are steps to take to make sure your family doesn’t get hooked(上瘾,入迷),such as:Putting the computer in a common area like a living room where you can’t spend hours on-line; using a timer to limit on-line time; joining a club or taking up a hobby.Anyone with balance and face-to-face contact with others isn’t likely to get hooked.Your family member or friend could be a cyberholic(电脑狂)if:They’re lying about how much time they spend on-line.They’re spending more and more time on-line and less and less time with you. They get anxious when they try to cut back on on-line time. They’re losing sleep to go on-line.

Venice’s Carnival

Venice, a small, waterside city in northeast Italy, boils with happiness and excitement once every year.Between February 21 and March 4,carnival(狂欢节)hits the streets. For most people, carnival means large parties and feasts(盛宴).But in Venice, it also means traditional masks(面具)and costumes(服装).These costumes originally(最初地)meant to hide personal identities(身份).Different social classes could mix in a sea of happiness.Along the waterways, people greeted each other with:“Good morning, Mrs.Mask.”

Today, people in Venice still dress up in the strangest ways-as armed soldiers, butchers, fishermen and so on.Bars and cafés are filled with party-goers who come to show off their fancy(奇异的)costumes.Their designs and creations are made by special studios.Ready-made costumes are not acceptable.“In the months before the carnival we work overtime to meet the demand,” said a mask maker.“Many kilometres of silk and lace(花边)are made into costumes. For shopkeepers, carnival is the best time of the year.”

The Venice carnival dates back to the Middle Ages.At that time, the city was one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. The tradition of celebrating with masks and costumes is thought to have been started by the “Stocking Companies”.These were groups of young men who organized parties and festivals and wore colourful stockings to distinguish(区分)themselves.

By the 18th century, the carnival had reached its peak(高潮).It all came to an end when Napoleon conquered(攻取)Venice in 1797.

Now the Venice carnival attracts huge crowds from all over the world. This year, about 700 000 people were taking part.Hotels were fully booked in advance, and bars and restaurants overflowed(爆满)every day.

The city certainly benefits(得益).A whole industry has been built up around the carnival’s masks and costumes.“The Venice carnival is a magical(迷人的)time! It’s such a great experience,” said one French tourist.

Question:

Say something about Venice’s carnival in your own words.
