【题目】Excused from recycling(回收利用)because you live in a high rise with a rubbish chute(垃圾滑道)? You_won't_be_for_long. Miami's Mark Shantzis has made it simple for those living in tall buildings to use the chute and recycle too.

In Shantzis' HiRise Recycling System, a chute leads to pieshaped container with six boxes that can turn around when operated. The system, which fits in the same space as the chute and container now in use, enables glass, plastic, paper, metal and other rubbish to go into separate boxes.

The system is controlled from a board fixed next to the chute door. The board has a button for each class of recycling materials(as well as for un-recyclables). At the press of a button, a microcomputer locks all other floor's chute doors and sets the recycling container turning until the right box comes under the chute. The computer also counts the loads and gives a signal by phone when the box is full. And a particular piece of equipment breaks up the nonrecyclables.

Sorting(分类)recyclables before they are collected saves the use of expensive materials recovery equipment which otherwise has to do the sorting. Such equipment often makes recycled materials very expensive, so expensive that tons of recyclables remain wasted! Shantzis believes his system could help recycled materials become more costeffective.

A.to encourage people to recycle their rubbish

B.to introduce a recycling system for high rises

C.to describe the use of computer technology in recycling

D.to explain the need for rubbish collection in high rises

【2】When he says“You won't be for long”the writer means that________.

A.you'll soon be living in a cleaner building

B.rubbish chutes will become out of date before long

C.you won't wait long for your turn to recycle rubbish

D.it won't be long before you'll have to recycle rubbish

【3】Before dropping rubbish into the chute you have to________.

A.lock the other floors' chute doors

B.check if the container is full

C.press the correct button

D.break up the rubbish

【4】The biggest advantage of this new system is that________.

A.it reduces the cost of recycling

B.it saves time and space

C.it saves money for people living in high rises

D.it makes better use of the existing recovery equipment

【答案】【1】B

【2】D

【3】C

【4】A

从第三段“The system is controlled from a board fixed next to the chute door. The board has a button for each class of recycling materials...a microcomputer locks all other floors' chute doors and sets the recycling container turning until the right box comes under the chute”可知正确答案为C。

【4】本题考查对文中所给信息进行推理判断的能力。文章的最后一段中所给的信息就告诉了我们这一题的答案。由“Shantzis believe his system could help recycled materials become more costeffective”可知这一新系统最大的优点是节约回收利用的成本。

【题目】Children in kindergarten are learning social skills. For this reason, it’s important to tell the children what will make them become good citizens when they grow up. It’s up to parents, teachers and all others involved with a kid to teach these skills.

Teaching kids to pick up things by themselves is a good way to teach them not to throw things on the ground. For example, if a class has to make paper cutouts (剪下的图样), after cutting, have the children pick up the wastepaper and place it in the wastebasket.

The golden rule of good citizenship should be taught at this age. The rule is “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself”. Teachers should ask their students how they want to be treated. There are many answers, such as not being treated in bad manners. The teacher should explain that others don’t like to be scared, so you should not scare others either.

Following the laws is good citizenship. Proper games can be played in the classroom. Games have rules, and all students in the class should follow the rules of the games. If a child doesn’t want to follow, it is up to the teacher to explain them to the child. Teaching children about following rules should help them understand the need to obey the law when they become adults.

Winton, now 105,was presented with the Order of the White Lion by the Czech president in a special ceremony at Prague Castle.

Winton, who has often been nicknamed “the British Schindler”,organised the transportation and settlement of 669 children over nine months before the Second World War broke out in September 1939.Most of those he saved were Jewish children living in then-German occupied Czechoslovakia whose families were later imprisoned or murdered in concentration camps.

Winton gave a speech during the ceremony. He said,“I want to thank you all for this enormous expression of thanks for something which happened to me a long time ago.I am delighted that so many of the children are still about and are here to thank me.England was the only country at that time willing to accept unaccompanied minors.I thank the British people for making room to accept them, and of course the enormous help given by so many of the Czechs who were at that time doing what they could to fight the Germans and to try to get the children out.’’

In the same ceremony, the Order of the White Lion was also presented to his grandson Nicholas Soames in honor of Sir Winston Churchill. They are the only British citizens to receive the award, after Margaret Thatcher and the Queen.Presenting the award, the Czech President,Milos Zeman said.“It is a great pleasure to present this award to two great personalities of the UK.I am only ashamed it has been awarded so late—but better late than never.”

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is“No”. It is not a tool a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further:he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his question into a large set of ideas about how the world works.

The scientist's knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any change file scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the change in the conditions.

This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigation. Einstein's ideas are shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

【1】“...knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone.”The author says this to show________.

A.the importance of information

B.the difference between carpenters and ordinary people

C.the difference between scientists and ordinary people

D.the importance of thinking

【2】A sound scientific theory should be one that________.

A.works under one set of conditions at one time and also works under the same conditions at other times

B.leaves no room for improvement

C.does not allow any change even under different conditions

D.can be used for many purposes

【3】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Scientists are different from the ordinary people.

B.The theory of relativity.

C.Exactness is the secret of science.

D.Exactness and way of using tools is the key to the making of a scientist.
