Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.

Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情)when they’ re in poorly lit places----and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.

Don’ t forget the clock----or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’ re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.

Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one ,total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

An ancient philosopher felt: be content with what you have; be pleased about the way things are. When you realize that, the whole world belongs to you.

When we can be grateful for what we have, and take our focus off what we think we are short of, it's amazing how our feelings will shift to a place of peace and happiness. The reason for "an attitude of thankfulness" isn't necessarily so that God can hear our appreciation, but perhaps so that we can live happily and peacefully, with a feeling of "all is well".

Have you ever experienced this-the feeling that "what is" is great, and there is no need to wish for things to be different? It's a wonderful feeling and a great way to go through life.

Here's an example: We have strong winds in the desert at times, and the other day the high winds broke three arms on the beautiful mimosa tree in my back yard. The tree's arms are twisted and the leaves and flowers are dying. It looks hurt and brown.

Well, that's certainly one way to choose to look at it, And if I choose that way, then I can allow myself to get upset that the tree has been hurt, that there will be less shade in the yard, that I have to cut up and pull away the branches, etc. OR I can choose to see that "all is well" –that nature does what it does, that trees will lose branches, that the yard is not a static thing, but it is alive. In other words, I can choose to be okay with "what is".

Either way, the tree situation hasn't changed-I've simply changed how I choose to interpret it. My interpretation then affects my emotions, my state of peacefulness, my happiness with things, etc.

When I choose to be content with "what is", to be pleased about the way things are, and to see that nothing is missing, that everything is just fine, then I choose to be at peace. Suddenly, the whole world looks beautiful. Instead of seeing problems, I see reality. I see "what is" and I am okay with it.

Try seeing everything and accepting everything just the way it is. And watch the world open up to you.

Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely(绝对地) terrifying.

1. . However, most deaths result from fear, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.

Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off th e road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel(方向盘) in the "ten and two" position.

Undo your seatbelt. 2. . Release the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.

3. . Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape choice either because of fear or misinformation about doors and sinking.

Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counter-intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car. 4. .

Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the stage where the car has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival. 5. . While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.

A. Open the window as soon as you hit the water.

B. This is the first thing to do, yet it often gets forgotten.

C. Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.

D. In short, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.

E. It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to be filled with water usually.

F. Such accidents are particularly dangerous to the risk of drowning(淹死).

G. But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.

For the last couple of weeks, I had been stuck in front of my computer working on a project that was very important to me. My every waking hour was consumed by the project and although I imagined that I would feel happy after completing parts of the project, I was confused to find that instead, I was feeling rather depressed. I tried a range of methods to help cheer myself up. I had a relaxing bath, cooked a delicious meal to enjoy with my family and even watched a lighthearted movie, but to no avail. It was only when I turned to think for a solution that the answer came to me: turn to nature!

The very next day, I grabbed my camera and a bottle of water and set off to spend a few hours walking in a nature reserve, even though it was pouring with rain. Within a couple of minutes I felt alive again. To be honest, I felt like a young school girl again and had to stop myself from hopping along the path singing, "I'm singing in the rain", a song I used to sing when I was a child. I think as adults we often try too hard to control our inner children and as a result we limit our own spirits, which only leads to depression and stress.

Interestingly, it has been shown that people who spend 40 minutes walking in a nature reserve have a drop in their blood pressure levels, but this does not happen when they spend a similar amount of time walking in a busy city center.

If you feel a little low in spirit and know that you have spent too much time indoors, relax completely, remove your shoes and let your inner child come out and play.

1.The reason why the author felt depressed is that_______.

A. she was afraid she couldn’t finish her work on time

B. she spent too much time indoors in front of her computer

C. her every waking hour was consumed by the project

D. the project was very important to her

2.In the author's opinion, _______.

A. adults should express their inner feelings freely

B. depression is usually caused by hard work

C. walking in a busy city center harms people's health

D. a bath can make people relaxed

3.The last paragraph mainly serves as a(n) _______.

A. explanation B. warning

C. introduction D. reminder
