I had never seen sand dunes(沙丘)before. If you go to the seaside in Britain, you may see some small hills of sand, but nothing very impressive. Of course, Africa is home to many beautiful “sandscapes”, but I was in China, so I went to Dunhuang.
I had spent my first day looking at the beautiful Mogao caves. Now I wanted to experience something very different.
I have been walking in Asia, Europe and America, but nothing prepared me for walking over hills of sand. Whenever I took a step up a hill, my feet would sink into the sand and move backwards. Sometimes it seemed as if I were moving in the wrong direction.
I wanted to see the sunset so I had to climb to the top of the highest sand dune. The sun was beating down upon my back as I walked slowly over the sand. Some plants had managed to survive in the dry ground but not many.
As I climbed higher, the hills of sand became steeper and my feet started to slip further backwards. I ended up with my hands and knees, crawling (爬行)upwards through the top. I just let go if I would fall the way down. But I refused to give up: inch by inch, I made my way to the top of the sand dune.
When I got there I was amazed by what I saw. The sand formed a very sharp point, just like a knife-edge. One side of the dune was bathed in sunshine, the other covered by shade. As I looked into the distance, the same pattern was repeated on all of the hilltops, and the difference between dark and light was beautiful.
As the sun began to sink, the shadows grew longer and the light became warm and orange. The wind had come to life and sand was blown against my legs as I walked along the dunes. Soon it was getting dark and I could only just make out the line of footprints that marked my journey to the top of the hill. I slowly made my way down to the bottom, my path lit by the dying sun.

It was an unforgettable experience. By the time we made it to the 36 , my hands were wet. I 37 he would remember everything I had taught him over and over again. 38 he stopped and asked, “So, Mom, how do you like my 39 ?”
I must admit that his performance was 40 . He had both hands on the wheel. His eyes never left the highway and his handling was far better than I’d ever imagined it would be, 41 it still needed improving.
Several 42 ago, I was teaching him to ride his bike. We started 43 . The third grade primary school student was 44 that his training wheels were taken off. Of course it was a long evening. He 45 several times but always got up quickly and kept 46 until he mastered riding.
Viewing the 47 , I guess it really wasn’t about him driving. It was about him 48 ---gaining more and more independence; not 49 me so much anymore.
He will be a(n) 50 in high school this fall. This will truly be a 51 year for both of us. He’s ready to have one of the best years of his young life and I will have (a) complete mental 52 . For this is probably the last year that my baby will be at home on a(n) 53 basis.
After this school year, he’ll go to college and then into the real world. Things all happen so 54 .
Now I see the time has just arrived for him to perform what he’s learned.
So, I guess you could say his driving lessons are lessons for me too. Yes, I’m being 55 that it’s his time to drive through life’s green lights and move towards his future as smoothly and skillfully as possible.

I believe that families are not only blood relatives, but sometimes people who show up and love you when no one else will.
In May 1977, I was living in a Howard Johnson’s motel off Interstate 10 in Houston. My dad and I 41 a room with two double beds and a bathroom was too 42 for a 15-year-old girl and her father. Dad’s second marriage was 43 and my stepmother had 44 us both out of the house the previous week. Dad had no 45_ what to do with me. And that’s when my other family 46 .
Barbara and Roland Beach took me into their home 47 their only daughter, Su, my best friend, asked them to. I 48 with them for the next seven years.
Barb washed my skirts the same as Su’s. She 49 I had lunch money, doctors’ appointments, help with homework and nightly hugs. Barbara and Roland attended every football game where Su and I were being cheerleaders. 50 I could tell, for the Beaches there was no 51 between Su and me; I was their daughter, too.
When Su and I 52 college they kept my room the same for the entire four years I attended school. Recently, Barb presented me with an insurance policy they bought when I first moved in with them and had continued to pay on for 23 years.
The Beaches knew 53 about me when they took me in – they had heard the whole story from Su. When I was seven, my mother died and from then on my father relied on other people to _54 his kids. Before I went to live with the Beaches I had believed that life was entirely 55__ and that love was shaky and untrustworthy. I had believed that the only person who would take care of me was me.
56 the Beaches, I would have become a bitter, cynical (愤世嫉俗的) woman. They gave me a(n) 57 that allowed me to grow and change. They kept me from being paralyzed by my _58 , and they gave me the confidence to open my heart.
I 59 family. For me, it wasn’t the family that was there on the day I was 60 , but the one that was there for me when I was living in a Howard Johnson’s on Interstate 10.
