　　Why are so many people so afraid of failure? Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail SO that failure becomes an experience that will lead to growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.

　　Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. A mother describes her child's hurriedly-made table as“perfect”! Even though it couldn't stand on uneven(not same in height) legs. Another way is to shift blame. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.

　　The trouble with failure-prevention methods is that they leave a child unequipped for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time--and that it's possible to enjoy a game even when you don't win. A child who's not invited to a birthday party. who doesn't make the honor roll or the baseball team feet terrible, of course. But parents should not offer a quick comfort prize or say“It doesn't matter”, because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment and be helped to master it.

　　Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-ups and children exactly alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it. Step one is to ask“Why did I fail?”. Control the natural impulse(冲动) to blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong，how you can improve. If someone else can help, don't be shy about asking them.

　　The famous director of a big and expensive movie planned to film a beautiful sunset over the ocean, so that the audience could see his hero and heroine in front of it at the end of the film as they said good-bye to each other forever. He sent his camera crew(摄制组)out one evening to film the sunset for him.

　　The next morning he said to the men,“Have you provided me with that sunset?”

　　“No, sir,”the men answered.

　　The director was angry.“Why not?”he asked.

　　“Well, sir.”one of the men answered, “we're on the east coast here, and the sun sets in the west. We can get you a sunrise over the sea, if necessary, but not a sunset.”

　　But then a young secretary had an idea.“Why don't you photograph a sunrise,”she suggested,“and then play it backwards. It'll look like a sunset.”

　　“That's a very good idea!”the director said. Then he turned to the camera crew and said,“Tomorrow morning I want you to get me a beautiful sunrise over the sea.”

　　The camera crew went out early the next morning end filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay (海湾). Then at nine o'clock they took it to the director.“Here it is, sir.”they said, and gave it to him. He was very pleased.

　　A few days ago I asked my son's governess(女家庭教师)Julia to come into my study．“Be seated, Julia,”I said, “Let's settle our accounts．I guess you most likely need some money, but maybe you're too polite to mention it．Now then, we agreed on thirty dollars a month…”

　　“No, thirty．I made a note of it．I always pay our governess thirty．Well, um, you've been here two months, so…”

　　“Two months and five days．”

　　“Exactly two months．I made a special note of it．That means you have sixty dollars coming to you．Take off nine Sundays…you know you didn't work with Tom on Sundays, you only took walks．And three holidays…”Julia was biting her finger nail nervously, her face red, but－not a word．

     CBC is a famous air company which has over twenty planes carrying passengers and goods, flying
along 12 fixed lines all over the world. Its service is very good but some passengers are still not satisfied
with it and that is why in 1998 and 1999 the company received letters of complaints(投诉) from consumers
or passengers who pointed out over a dozen kinds of problems which are divided in groups in the following
table. This division is called Category. Problems that appear when the plane is flying are Flight problems.
Those about passengers' things carried by the plane are Baggage problems. Customer service refers to
service work which passengers are not satisfied with. Over sales of seats are about the fact that more seats
are sold and as a result the plane is too crowded to be safe. Refund problems appear when passengers fail
