【题目】The girl was hanging by her hands from the railings of a balcony(阳台的栏杆). The balcony was on the twelfth floor of the high-rise block next to his. His flat was on the ninth floor and he had to look up to see her. It was half-past six in the morning. He had been awakened by the sound of an aircraft flying dangerously low overhead, and had got out of bed to look. His sleepy eyes, moved from the blue sky which was empty of cloud, empty of anything but the bright disappearing arrow of the aircraft, and then rested on the hanging figure.

He really thought he must be dreaming, for this sunrise time was the hour for dreams. Then, when he knew he wasn’t, he decided it must be a scene in a film. There were cameramen down there, a whole film unit, and all the correct safety precautions had been taken. Probably the girl wasn’t even a real girl, but a dummy(假人). He opened the window and looked down. The car park, paved courts, grass spaces between the blocks, all were deserted. On the balcony rail one of the dummy’s hands moved, desperately. He had to believe then what was obviously happening. The girl was trying to kill herself. She had lost her courage and now was trying to stay alive. All these thoughts and conclusions of his occupied about thirty seconds. Then he acted. He picked up the phone and dialed the emergency number for the police.

The arrival of the police cars and the rescue of the girl became the focus of talk for the people of the two blocks. Someone found out that it was he who had called the police and he became an unwilling hero. He was a modest, quiet young man, and was in relief when the talk began to die away. Again he was able to enter and leave his flat without being pointed at as a kind of St George and sometimes even congratulated.

About a fortnight after that morning, he was getting ready to go to the theatre, just putting on his overcoat, when the doorbell rang. He didn’t recognize the girl who stood outside. He had never seen her face. She said, “I’m Lydia Simpson. You saved my life. I’ve come to thank you.”

【题目】Dear Reader,

I receive many letters from children and can’t answer them all—there wouldn’t be time enough in a dayThat is why I am sending you this printed reply to your letterI’ll try to answer some of the questions that are commonly asked.

Where did I get the idea for Stuart Little and for Charlotte’s Web? Well, many years ago I went to bed one night in a railway sleeping car, and during the night I dreamed about a tiny boy who acted rather like a mouseThat’s how the story of Stuart Little got started.

As for Charlotte’s Web, I like animals and my barn(谷仓)is a very pleasant place to be, at all hoursOne day when I was on my way to feed the pig, I began feeling sorry for the pig because, like most pigs, he was doomed to dieThis made me sadSo I started thinking of ways to save a pig’s lifeI had been watching a big grey spider at her work and was impressed by how clever she was at weavingGradually I worked the spider into the story that you know, a story of friendship and salvation(拯救)on a farmThree years after I started writing it, it was published.(I am not a fast worker, as you can see.

Sometimes I’m asked how old I was when I started to write, and what made me want to writeI started early—as soon as I could spellIn fact, I can’t remember any time in my life when I wasn’t busy writingI don’t know what caused me to do it, or why I enjoyed it, but I think children often find pleasure and satisfaction in trying to set their thoughts down on paper, either in words or in picturesI was no good at drawing, so I used words insteadAs I grew older, I found that writing can be a way of earning a living.

Some of my readers want me to visit their schoolSome want me to send a picture, or an autograph, or a bookAnd some ask questions about my family and my animals and my petsMuch as I’d like to, I can’t go visitingI can’t send books, either—you can find them in a bookstore or a libraryMany children assume that a writer owns or even makeshis own booksThis is not true—books are made by the publisherIf a writer wants a copy, he must buy itThat’s why I can’t send booksAnd I do not send signatures—I leave that to the movie starsI live most of the year in the country, in New EnglandFrom our windows we can look out at the sea and the mountainsI live near my married son and three grandchildren.

Are my stories true, you ask? No, they are imaginary tales, containing fantastic characters and eventsIn real life, a family doesn’t have a child who looks like a mouse; in real life, a spider doesn’t spin words in her webIn real life, a swan doesn’t blow a trumpetBut real life is only one kind of life—there is also the life of the imaginationAnd although my stories are imaginary, I like to think that there is some truth in them, too—truth about the way people and animals feel and think and act.

Yours sincerelyE.BWhite

【题目】Technology is creating big changes in the music industry. Music lovers listen to and buy music on the Internet. They can watch live concerts of favorite artists online. And music makers, as well as music industry officials, use social media(媒体) to reach an increase public interest.

Nick Sherwin is the founder of the band called Suburban Skies. He says today’s technology permits a band to control its own future. He said, “Social media is a wonderful thing. You can make use of it to reach the public.” Sherwin says the Internet and social media have created possibilities for musicians. He says the new way to success is to give visitors more than one type of experience. “The most important thing is the content. You have to have songs and videos to show the audience. But I think it is extremely important to do shows, to build your brand, and to make you well known, Sherwin said.

Music industry officials discussed the future of the business during an international conference in Los Angeles, California. They said musicians are choosing to perform live across the country, following the drop in CD sales in the Unites States. Rob Light is head of music with a creative artists agency. He said, “Most of the income for artists is now coming from the live marketplace.”

Along with the popularity of live music there has been a big increase in the number of music festivals. These events are advertised on social media. Pasquale Rotella leads Insomniac, a company that produces electronic dance music festivals in several countries. “Someone could make it in their bedroom and put it out there. People can gain fans online without anyone’s help. That has completely helped the growth of dance music. said Rotella.

Bob Pittman leads the radio organization Clear Channel Communication. He says music lovers are still listening to the radio, although there are new ways of finding music. He says 70 percent of Americans say they discover new music from what they hear on the radio. But Rob Light says radio will soon be a thing of the past. However, Nick Sherwin is not worried. He just wants to reach everyone who likes his style of music with the help of the Internet.

B. doesn’t believe his band has good content to draw attention.

A. dance music has finally become popular.

B. there is too much music for people nowadays.

C. electronic dance music festivals are easy to hold.

D. people can make their music heard easily nowadays.

【3】According to Bob Pittman, radio ______.

A. will be out of date quite soon.
