Changes in the value of currency help some parts of the economy and hurt others.

When people go to foreign countries, they have direct experience with the exchange rate (汇率)of money.International travelers must use their own money to buy the currency of the country they are visiting. For example, Americans on holiday in a foreign country can buy more currency when the dollar has a high exchange value.

So a high exchange value is good for vacationers. It is not so good for exporting.A strong dollar means that American exports are more costly.Other countries are less likely to import products from the United States because they are too costly.American agricultural goods, computers and airplanes all are more costly on the world market when the dollar is strong.

However, sellers of foreign goods within the United States are helped by a strong dollar.A strong dollar means that American companies can buy more with the same amount of money. They can sell goods at a low price in the "United States and still make a profit.

This helps to increase the American trade deficit(贸易逆差).

A weak dollar helps American companies that do business overseas. For example, the American computer industry gains because its products are less costly to foreign buyers.Financial magazines report that technology companies like Intel and Microsoft have increased profits because of the weak dollar. Increased trade helps reduce the American trade deficit.

The United States Department keeps information on America's imports and exports. Information on the third quarter of 2003 shows that America's trade deficit did fall.American exporters should gain the most from the falling dollar. But, the effect of the weakening dollar on the United States trade deficit remains to be seen.

A.they can buy more currency in foreign countries

A.American businessmen import only a few goods from other countries

B.American government don't want other countries to import goods from America

C.American goods are more costly because of the strong dollar

D.American businessmen make a lot of money by selling foreign products cheaply

3.According to the passage, American trade deficit can be reduced by ______.

     A.increasing the dollar exchange value

B.making the dollar weak in exchange value

C.forcing foreign countries to open their markets further

Even though chocolate is loaded with calories, it contains ingredients(材料)that may favour weight loss ___40___ than fat synthesis, scientists believe.___41___ boosting calorie intake, regular chocolate consumption was related to lower BMI in the study, ___42___ is published in Archives of Internal Medicine. The link remained even when other factors, like how ___43___ exercise individuals did, were taken into ___44___.And it appears it is how often you eat chocolate that is important, rather than how much of it you eat. The ___45___ found no link with quantity consumed.

___46___ to the researchers, there is only one chance in a hundred that their findings could be explained by chance alone. Lead author Dr Beatrice Golomb, from the University of California at San Diego, said: "Our findings appear to add to a body of information suggesting that the composition of calories, not just the number of them, matters for determining their ultimate impact on weight."This is not the first time scientists ___47___ that chocolate may be healthy for us. Other studies have claimed chocolate may be good for the heart. Consumption of certain types of chocolate has been linked to some favourable changes in blood pressure, insulin(胰岛素)sensitivity and cholesterol(胆固醇)level. And chocolate, ___48___ dark chocolate, does contain antioxidants(抗氧化剂)which can help to mop up harmful free radicals - unstable chemicals that can damage our cells.

Dr Golomb and her team believe that antioxidant compounds, called catechins(儿茶素), can improve lean muscle mass and reduce weight  ___49___ studies in rodents would suggest this might be so. Mice ___50___ for 15 days with epicatechin (present in dark chocolate) had improved exercise performance and observable changes to their muscle composition. They say clinical trials are now needed in humans to see ___51___ this is the case.

The American book Who Moved My Cheese(奶酪) has been a bestseller all over the world. It teaches people how to face changes in their lives. Now its author Spence Johnson has written a book just for teens(青少年). The book tells us that when facing change in our lives, like a new school or new friends, don't be afraid. Instead, use this change to make a better life. The book gives an example of a change at school. A school is changing from having two terms to three terms because there are too many students.

Several teens are talking about this. Most of them are unhappy and worried. But Chris is not. He laughs and tells a story about two mice(老鼠), two“little people”and some cheese.

The four are in a maze looking for the cheese. Here, cheese means something important in life, like moving to a new class or getting into college. But they find the cheese is gone. The mice realize that they can’t change what has happened and have to find more cheese. This means finding different dreams. The little people, however, can’t do this. They are afraid of change so they find no cheese.

After Chris finishes the story, the friends understand one thing: to get more cheese, move in a new direction quickly. His friends understand how this can be used in the changes all teens face, such as doing well at school or having good relationships or just feeling good about yourself.

Earthquakes may rightly be ranked as one of the most destructive forces known to man: since records began to be written down, it has been estimated that earthquake-related fatalities (????) have numbered in the millions, and that earthquake-related destruction has been beyond calculation. The greater part of such damage and loss of life had been due to collapse of buildings and the effects of rockslides, floods, fire, disease, tsunamis, and other observable events resulting from earthquakes, rather than from quakes themselves.

The great majority of all earthquakes occur in two specific geographic areas. One such area covers the Pacific Ocean and its bordering landmasses. The other extends from the East Indians to the Atlas Mountains, including the Himalayas, Iran, Turkey and the Alpine regions. It is in these two great belts or zones that ninety percent of all earthquakes take place; they may, however, happen anywhere at any time.

This element of unknown has for centuries added greatly to the dead and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake forecast may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior, patterns of movements in the earth's shell, variations in the earth's force of attraction, and the frequency with which minor earth shakes are observed, scientists have shown increasing success in expecting when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, a worldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped to prepare for (and thus lessen) the vast destruction that might otherwise have been totally unexpected.

It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and get rid of their destructiveness altogether, but as how and why earthquakes happen become better understood, man will become more and more able to deal with their possible damage before they occur.

60. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Earthquakes destruction is declining.

B. Man is capable of conquering earthquakes.

C. Man is no longer fearful of earthquakes.

D. Earthquake forecast is improving.

61. We can infer from the passage that quakes _______ .

A. mostly strike in oceans and mountains

B. may happen anywhere at any time

C. are unperceivable in masses of land

D. are hardly the direct cause of fatalities

62. The underlined phrase "This element of unknown" in Paragraph 3 refers to__.

A. the extension of earthquake zones

B. the percentage of earthquake occurrences

C. when and where earthquakes may occur

D. what big damage earthquakes may cause

63. Man's research on earthquake forecast at present is to _________ .

A. lower the frequency of earthquakes

B. release the energy that causes earthquakes

C. reduce the loss from earthquake disasters

D. analyze the relationship between different earthquakes

Many people have been talking about the way in which the world will come to an end in 2012. Everybody wants to find out if December 21, 2012 is the last day of the earth. The rumor has already been spreading for a very long time. The Mayan’s prediction can account for the rumor. According to the rumor, the earth will experience dramatic changes in 2012 and the changes will be disastrous to all of the living creatures on earth. It is widely assumed that a Planet X will return to orbit the solar system. The return of Planet X will have a destructive effect on the solar system as well as on some planets including the Neptune, the Jupiter and the earth. Planet X will cross into their orbits. There’s a possibility that Jupiter will change into a little sun at this time, so folks will be well placed to see two suns in the sky in 2012.

The solar flares (耀斑) that occur in a 11-year cycle will reach their highest point in 2012. The powerful solar flares will affect the magnetic field of the earth and cause disasters. On December 21, 2012, the sun and the earth will line up in the same line at the equator(赤道). The winter solstice(冬至) only occurs once every 25,800 years. The events in the universe are signals that the world will come to an end. As a result of the solar flares, lots of disasters will happen that will destroy the face of the whole earth. Scientists are making the guess primarily based on the Mayan Long Count Calendar.

Many films have been made about the end of the world including End Game by Alex Jones and End Clock: Nostradamus 2012. The former provides insights about the way the world will become one state. After the world government is in place, it’s going to be easy to exterminate 80% of the people in the world. The rest will continue to live with assistance from advanced technology.

No one knows whether the world will end on December 21, 2012: There is no clear answer until the day arrives. Just as the Mayans claim, it will not be the time for the world to end. Instead, it will be the dawn of a fresh start.

1. What is the passage mainly about?

   A. Information about end-of-the-world predictions.

   B. Different opinions about end-of-the-world predictions.

   C. Some doubts about end-of-the-world predictions.

   D. Destructive effects of the end of the world.

2.Which of the following things will NOT happen if the end of the world really happens?

   A. Humans will see two suns at the same time.

   B. The earth will look completely different.

   C. The earth and the moon will line up in the same line.

   D. The solar flares will become stronger than before.

3.The underlined word “exterminate” in Paragraph 3 probably means “__________”.

   A. save              B. kill             C. help             D. rule

4.What is the author’s attitude to the rumor that the world will end?

   A. Optimistic    .       B. Sad.             C. Unconcerned.     D. Scared.
