The first day of school our professor introduced a little old lady to us.

"Why are you in college at such a young age?" I asked later. She jokingly replied, " I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel."

"No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one! ”she told me.

We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class to?gether and talk nonstop. I was always listening to this " time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to make a speech to our football team. I'll never forget what she taught us. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her note card on the floor. A little embarrassed she simply said, "I'm sorry. This whiskey is killing me!I'll never get my speech back in order to let me just tell you what I know."As we laughed she cleared her throat and began:" We do not stop playing because we are old;we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving suc?cess. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it!There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did,but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."

At the year's end Rose finished the college degree. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral to honor the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

Teaching children to read well from the start is the most important task of elementary schools. But relying on educators to approach this task correctly can be a great mistake. Many schools continue to employ instructional methods that have been proven ineffective. The staying power of the "looksay" or " wholeword" method of teaching beginning reading is perhaps the most flagrant example of this failure to instruct effectively.

The wholeword approach to reading stresses the meaning of words over the meaning of let?ters, thinking over decoding, developing a sight vocabulary of familiar words over developing the ability to unlock the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. It fits in with the selfdirected, "learning how to learn" activities recommended by advocates (倡导者) of "open" classrooms and with the concept that children have to be developmentally ready to begin reading. Before 1963,no major publisher put out anything but these "Run-Spot-Run" readers.

However,in 1955,Rudolf Resch touched off what has been called "the great debate" in beginning reading. In his bestseller Why Johnny Cant Read,Flesch indicted (控诉) the nation's public schools for miseducating students by using the looksay method. He said―and more scholarly studies by Jeane Chall and Rovert Dykstra later confirmed―that another approach to beginning reading, founded on phonics (语音学) ,is far superior.

Systematic phonics first teaches children to associate letters and letter combinations with sounds;it then teaches them how to blend these sounds together to make words. Rather than building up a relatively limited vocabulary of memorized words,it imparts a code by which the pronunciations of the vast majority of the most common words in the English language can be learned. Phonics does not devalue the importance of thinking about the meaning of words and sentences;it simply recognizes that decoding is the logical and necessary first step.

Last week, all the teachers and students of our school watched a special performance by some disabled people.

First was a dance named "The Light of Life". There were three young women who had lost one of their legs and several deafmutes among the dancers. As they held out their arms to greet the light of life,I could see how they have had to struggle against many difficulties. Dur?ing the dance I could see how alive their minds were.

The singer who came next shocked us all. He was very young, but his hands had both been burnt off in a big fire. I dared not look at his wrists too closely. All I could do was to listen to his song quietly. It was called "Late Autumn" and he sang with a low gentle voice. Though in fact it was warm spring,I felt a bit cold and sentimental to hear the song,as if it was late au?tumn. "How much love and gloom is hidden in the heart? I want to hold your hand again."

When I heard this, tears rolled down my face. He had lost not only his hands, but also the chance to hold a girl's hand. I hope he finds a lovely girl one day for company, though he can't hold her hand.

Another young man's arms had been cut off when he was six. From then on,his feet were his "hands". He could manage a number of things with his feet. He greatly impressed us with his handwriting. Two big characters "腾飞"(Flying High) expressed his wish.

"If your wings are broken, your heart can still fly ," said Zhang Haidi,a famous disabled writer.

In our country, there are many people with disabilities. However, most of them don't give in. Their bodies may be damaged but they have wonderful minds. Just as Zhang said, they can fly.

I think of those disabled people who preformed for us. They have a disability, but they still gave off a youthful glow.

To be young means to have all kinds of possibilities. We should challenge our limits and go beyond ourselves. As long as you work hard, miracles will happen sooner or later. I believe, where there is a will, there is a way.

Years ago,in a small fishing village in Holland,a young boy taught the world about the rewards of unselfish service. Because the entire village lived by fishing,a volunteer rescue team was needed in case of emergency. One night the winds blew heavily, the clouds burst and a sudden storm overturned a fishing boat at sea. In trouble, the crew sent out the S. O. S. The captain of the rescue rowboat team heard the alarm and the villagers gathered in the town square overlooking the bay.

An hour later, the rescue boat reappeared through the fog and the cheering villagers ran to greet them. Falling tired out on the sand, the volunteers reported that the rescue boat could not hold any more passengers and they had to leave one man behind.   Madly, the captain called for another volunteer team to look for the lone survivor. Sixteen-year-old Hans stepped forward. His mother seized his arm, begging, "Please don't go. Your father died in a shipwreck 10 years ago and your older brother,Paul, has been lost at sea for three weeks. Hans, you are all I have left."

Hans replied, " Mother, this time I have to do my duty. When the call for service comes,we all need to take our turn and do our part. " Hans kissed his mother, joined the team and dis?appeared into the night.

Another hour passed, which seemed to Hans' mother like a century. Finally, the rescue boat moved through the fog with Hans standing up in the bows.
