B. Gym problem.
C. Stay the course.
D. Have a clear destination.
E. Record everything.
F. Have a plan.
1.________
From the several hours I spend a day at my gym I get to observe all types of gym goers.  One thing
most of them have in common is that they all appear to be lost.  The gym, much like a dense forest, can
be a very scary place and if you don't have a plan you can end up forgetting where you are or where you
are going.  Here are a few things you must do if you want to guarantee success at the gym.
2. ________
If you're going to venture into the forest it would seem smart to have a general idea of where you are
going and why you are going there.  The first question you must ask yourself is "why"?  Why are you even working out?  It sounds simple but if you cannot come up with a good enough answer then you may be
wasting your time.  You see, if you are working out based on other people's values of what a healthy
lifestyle is, then you may be setting yourself up for failure.  Once you understand why then you must figure out what you would like the end result to be.  You should choose something specific and you should write
it down.  How many pounds would you like to lose?  What size clothes do you want to fit in?  How many points off your cholesterol would you like to drop?  Ask yourself specific questions and have answers for
them.  Next you must decide when you would like to have reached these goals.  Create specific times and dates.  Mark them down on your calendar.
3. ________
Once you know where you want to go you must now figure out the path you would like to take to get
there.  In fitness there are many paths to choose from and it can be quite confusing.  While some paths
may be quicker or more appropriate to take than others it is most important to just pick one and stay with
it.  Every time you enter that gym have a clear idea of what is going to happen. Know what pieces of
equipment you need to use, know how many sets you must perform and have a good idea how long it
should take you to complete the workout.
4. ________
There will be times when it may seem hard to stay on track.  Whether you're traveling, someone is
using a piece of equipment you need to use, or work gets in the way.  It will be important for you to learn
to improvise in these situations.  Plan ahead when traveling, have alternate exercises in mind, and learn to
adapt when change occurs. But in the end, always trust in the course you have previously mapped out for
yourself.  Come back to it and adhere to it as accurately as possible.
5. ________
Always keep a fitness journal. Otherwise you will find it very hard to keep track of where you have
been and where you are going.  Write down all exercises performed, how much weight used, how you
felt, and if you think you can do better the next time you will work out.  This is one of the most
overlooked and powerful tools when it comes to attaining your goals.

When she looked ahead,Florence Chadwick saw nothing but a solid wall of fog.Her body was
numb (麻木的).She had been swimming for nearly sixteen hours.Already she was the first woman
to swim the English Channel in both directions. Now,at age 34,her goal was to become the first
woman to swim from Catalina Island to the California coast.
On that fourth morning of July in 1952,the sea was like an ice bath and the fog was so dense
that she could hardly see her support boats.Sharks cruised (巡游)toward her lone figure, only to
be driven away by rifle shots.Against the frigid grip of the sea,she struggled on-hour after hour-while
millions watched on national television.
Alongside Florence in one of the boats, her mother and her trainer offered encouragement. They
told her it wasn't much farther. But all she could see was fog. They urged her not to quit. She never
had...until then. With only a half mile to go,she asked to be pulled out.
Still thawing (使变暖和)her chilled body several hours later, she told a reporter,"Look,I'm not
excusing myself, but if I could have seen land I might have made it." It was not tiredness or even the
cold water that defeated her.It was the fog.She was unable to see her goal.
Two months later, she tried again. This time, despite the same dense fog,she swam with her faith
intact and her goal clearly pictured in her mind. She knew that somewhere behind that fog was land
and this time she made it!Florence Chadwick became the first woman to swim the Catalina Channel,
eclipsing the men's record by two hours!

An argument is appearing in Los Angeles over whether a newspaper should publish teachers' names
along with an analysis of how well they do in raising their students' standardized test scores.
Some people argue that transparency(透明) should exist at all costs, but others hold that it's unfair to
label individual teachers using possibly flawed(有瑕疵的) statistics. Some worry that anger over the
forthcoming Los Angeles Times article will make people oppose so-called "value added" analysis of
teacher performance, which is the method the Times uses.
"This incident with the L.A. Times is where the advocates(提倡者) for value-added are getting a bit
ahead of themselves," says Douglas Harris, an education professor. "Teachers are already feeling
under the gun on this kind of thing
."
     "
Value-added data" is the latest trend in teacher responsibility: the idea that a student's gain from the
previous year's test ? as opposed to his or her overall performance ? can be measured and tied to the
latest teacher.
"There are too many variables(变量) in the testing process," says A.J. Duffy. But he says he opposes
using value-added data in evaluations at all, although he acknowledges it could be a useful tool to give
teachers feedback. "I believe in a system that emphasizes the whole student, not just standardized tests,"
he says.
Proponents(支持者) of value-added say that's a valid criticism, agreeing that no one should expect
that student gains on a standardized test could capture the creativity or broader enrichment that goes on
in many teachers' classrooms. The District of Columbia which attracted argument for its decision to fire
teachers based in part on value-added data, uses that data for 50 percent of the evaluation, relying on
other measures such as classroom observation for the rest. "No one is suggesting using it as a single
measure of performance," says Paige Kowalski.
Barnett Berry, a professor, is even more critical of it. Value-added data can be useful, he and others
say, but it's important to acknowledge its limitations. It doesn't take into account, for instance, constant
student absence and learning gains due to summer school, after-school programs, or supplemental
teachers, such as reading specialists.

3. The underlined word "it" in Para. 6 refers to _______.

A. the creativity or broader enrichment
B. a standardized test
C. classroom observation
D. value-added data

4. What's the passage mainly about?

A. How well teachers can do in raising students' scores
B. Whether teachers should be linked to student's scores
C. Who opposes value-added analysis of teacher performance.
D. Why the Los Angeles Times plans to publish names of teachers.

Clothes can make phone calls, play music, dial your pal's number, keep you warm during cold
weather and operate your computer.
This is not a fantasy. A British company, called electrotexiles, has created a wide range of
clothes-clothes tha have minds of their own ! Scientists, working for the company, have invented a
kind of fabric that can be mixed with flexible electronic materials to create intelligent clothing. The
results are electronic garments.
If you think the weather has to be wired to different devices, think again. These designer clothes
are wirefree, soft to touch and washable! Like any electronic device, these hightech clothes have to
be powered. Currently, a tiny ninevolt battery serves the purpose. But the researchers hope that in the
near future the clothes will generate electricity by using body heat. These clothes are 100% shockproof,
they say.
The electrotexiles team has also created the world's first cloth keyboard. These keyboard can be
sewn into your trousers or skirt. To use this device, you will have to sit down and tap on your lap!
These "laptap" devices are all set to take over laptop computers!
Another useful garment is the shirtcummobile phone. This handy invention enables drivers to chat
comfortably with others at the wheel! Other popular electronic wears include the denim (牛仔布)
jacket with flexible earphones sewn into the hoop and the electronic ski jacket with a builtin heater. The
ski jacket is also programmed to send signals to a satellite. This technology is known as global positioning
system and can be used to track lost skiers and wandering kids.
Having completed the cloth keyboard, scientists have already started to work on a new project-a
necktie that can be used as a computer mouse. What is the next? Do you have any idea?
