A few days ago, I got a letter from a student. In his letter, he told me, “I have this friend at school. She’s one of my good friends but lately she has been ___36__ strange. When I talked to her the other day, she said coldly, ‘Do I look like I care?’ She was being all strange to me. She told me __37___ she thought I was a bad friend, but she still thinks I am her best friend. I am so confused.”

In my letter in reply, I gave him my advice:

After reading your question, I can understand why you’re confused. It sounds like your relationship with your friend is a little shaky. There could be several reasons for her __38__. For example, maybe she has a lot on her mind and is __39__ a few challenges of her own. She may not feel comfortable talking to anyone about them __40__ and may just need a little time to sort through her own feelings. Or, on the day you talked to her, she could have been having a bad day and didn’t realize she was very cold to you. I could list a few more __41__for you, but you know, __42__, the only person who knows why your friend reacted that way is your friend. My__43__ to you is to tell her how you feel. Let her know she hurt your feelings and ask why on some days she’s nice to you, and on other days she isn’t __44__ nice. It could be that your friend is making some other new friends at school and is having difficulty __45___ her old relationships. Whatever her reasons are, you should let her know that you are a unique, caring person who certainly deserves a good friendship at school, _46__ you wouldn’t have taken the time to write me. If your __47__ with this person fades a bit, it’s OK, because you will develop may other friendships.

I wish I __38__ give a good excuse for what I did. At the very least, I wish I could explain it somehow — __39__ it on youth, inexperience or ignorance. Unfortunately, I’m __40__, experienced and I know better.

__41__ I work with some very kind and compassionate(富于同情心的) people. For the past couple of days many of them have taken time to __42__ by my desk and offer comfort, encouragement and support. Some have shared with me similar __43__ they have made. Evidently I’m not the only “ __44__ ” person here.

“It happened”, she said, “There’s nothing you can do to __52__ that. It happened. But it’s over now. It’s __53__. It’s in the past. You need to let it go, and move on.” And with that she returned her __54__ to her work, as if to say, “We’re done here.”     I beat myself up for weeks. One of the most common social fears is that we are not good enough. Perhaps you feel you won’t   21  others because they are more confident, successful, intelligent or attractive than you. Such thinking is misguided. The   22  of doing well is accepting yourself as you are.
When I was a student, I kept a diary filled with   23  memories. Some were painful memories from   24  when I felt hurt, confused, lonely and insecure. I   25  pieces of dreams and personal feelings of anger and hatred,   26  things I enjoyed such as magic shops and coin dealers.
Then a terrible thing happened.   27  dinner one night I realized I had left my diary in the cloakroom(衣帽间)outside the campus dining hall.   28  that somebody might read it and find out the truth about me, I   29  back, but it was gone.
Weeks passed, and eventually I gave up hope of ever finding it   30 . A month later, I was 31  up my jacket in the same place when I saw my brown   32  diary, just where I’d left it.
33  I read through the pages and found that a   34  had written the following, “God bless you. I’m   35  like you, only I   36  keep a diary, and I’m   37  to know there are others like me. I hope things turn out well for you.”
Tears came to my eyes. It had never dawned(开始为人所明白)on me that any one could know my inner feelings and also   38  things just like the way I did.
No matter what you are like, whether you’re rich or poor, brilliant or average, attractive or 39 , there are people like you. Discard(抛弃)your fears of not measuring up(符合期望), and 40  yourself as you are.

When Stephen Guyer’s three children were growing up, he told them stories about how his grandfather, a banker,    33  all in the 1930s, but did not lose sight of what he valued most. In one of the darkest times   34  his strong-minded grandfather was nearly   35  , he loaded his family into the car and   36  them to see family members in Canada with a   37  ,“there are more important thins in life than money. ”
The  38  took on a new meaning recently when Mr. Guyer downsized to a   39   house from a more expensive and comfortable one. What they   42   was how warm the people were in the house and how  43    of their heart was accessible.
Many parents are finding family stories have surprising power to help children   44   hard times. Storytelling expects say the phenomenon reflects a growing  45   in telling tales, evidenced by a rise in a storytelling events and festivals.
A university   46   of 65 families with children aged from 14 to 16 found kids’ ability to 47  parents’ stories was linked to a lower rate of anger and anxiety.
The  48   is telling the stories in a way children can  49    . We’re not talking here about the kind of story that   50  , “When I was a kid, I walked to school every day uphill both ways, barefoot in the snow. ” Instead, we should choose a story suited to the child’s  51   , and make eye contact(接触)to create “a personal experience”. We don’t have to tell children5u 52  they should take from the story and what the moral is . ”
