When a person is curious about something, it means he is interested in it and wishes to know something about it.There is wrong with curiosity in itself.Whether it is good or bad depends on what people are curious about.

Curiosity sometimes be foolish or wrong. Some people with nothing to do are full of curiosity about what their neighbors are doing. They have a strong wish to know what they are bringing home or taking outside, or they have come home so early or late. To be interested in these things is silly because it is none of their__ to know what their neigh-bours do or are doing. Such curiosity is not only foolish but also harmful. Most probably, it may lead to a small talk which often brings harm or disrespect to others, thus (hurt)others' feelings.

However, there is a clever curiosity-the curiosity of wise men, who wonder at all the great things and try to find out all they can learn about them.Columbus could never have found America if he (not be) curious. James Watt would not have made the steam engine his curiosity about the rising of the kettle lid. All the discoveries in human history have (make)as a result of curiosity, so the clever curiosity is never about (important) things which have little or nothing to do with the happiness of public.

1.There is nothing wrong with sth .

2.Some people with nothing to do are full of curiosity about what their neighbors are doing.

3.They have a strong wish to know what they are bringing home or taking outside, or they have come home so early or late.

4.To be interested in these things is silly because it is none of their__ to know what their neigh-bours do or are doing. It’s none of one’s business:与某人无关。故填business。

5. Most probably, it may lead to a small talk which often brings harm or disrespect to others, thus (hurt)others' feelings.

6.had not been。 这是一个虚拟语气,从句中用过去完成时,主句用could/should/maight/would+have done结构。故填had not been。

7.without/but for。 故填without/but for。

8.been made。 All the discoveries in human history have (make)as a result of curiosity, 故填been made。

9.so the clever curiosity is never about (important) things

10.so the clever curiosity is never about unimportant things which have little or nothing to do with the happiness of public. 故填the。

Picture the scene: the battery on your mobile phone has run out. You can't make any calls for help and no one can contact you. You are all alone - well, not quite. Just reach into your pocket and take out a piece of sugar.Put it into the battery, wait a minute, and you're back on the phone.

Thanks to a couple of American scientists, this situation could become real.Swadesh Chaudhuri and Derek Lovely have invented the"bacteria battery" - powered by bacteria that eats sugar and turns it into electricity.

"This is a special organism," Lovely said."You can harvest enough electricity to power a cell phone battery for about four days from a spoonful of sugar."

In the past, bacteria batteries have been expensive and not long-lasting. But this battery uses more efficient bacteria that can turn 80 percent of sugar into electrical energy. This is 30 percent more than similar batteries can manage.

The bacteria battery could become as small as a household battery. It's also cheap and stable, as sugar can be taken from waste and crops.

But the sugar to electricity process is slow: it could take weeks for the bacteria to digest a cup of sugar. And it produces "greenhouse" gases which pollute the environment.

The scientists understand there is a lot more work to be done. "It is still young," said Lovely."Where we are now is where solar power was 200r 30 years ago."

But he believes the battery could be used in scientific equipment at the bottom of the ocean.Other ideas include using sugar in the blood to run medical devices in the human body, and taking sugar from animal waste to provide energy to power homes in rural areas.

Despite the high technology and investment in flood defences by the Environment Agency, there is no way to stop all flooding -- sooner or later nature will produce something that will beat even the strongest defences.

Warning people of this danger is very important if we are to prevent the great loss of life seen fifty-three years ago. Indeed if the Flood Warning System that currently exists had been around on that cold, stormy night in January 1953, many lives would have been spared.

The Environment Agency took over the role of flood warning in 1995 from the police who had to go door to door or sound alarms to get the news out. The service is being constantly improved and a combination of better technology and increased investment following the Easter Floods of 1998 has led to the creation of Floodline and an automatic messaging system that can warn thousands of people in very little time.

Floodline 0845 988 1188 offers information and advice 24 hours a day and if warnings are in place, callers can get information either from local updates or by using a quickdial code for their area.

The Flood Warning team in Kent has also sent letters to the people living close to the rivers or the sea and invited them to join the AVM (automated voice messaging) system. Anyone choosing to take up this free service will receive a recorded message directly to their home, business or pager telling them of the level of warning, giving them as much time as possible to carry out their flood plan and save items that cannot be replaced if lost or damaged, such as photographs or children’s favorite toys.
