We’ve all got a lot going on in our lives. Some things are fun, some aren’t. I think I’ m a fairly positive person. 1   In fact, being positive means different things to different people. 2  

Focus on what you have not what you don’t. It’s impossible for one to have all the nice things in the world. Focus on what you already have. This can create feelings of happiness.

3  If you can express thanks for everything you have, you leave little room for bad thoughts. It’s a great practice. When you focus on what really matters, so many worries go away.

So many times I hear people say that they will be happy once a certain event occurs. They think that once they move into a new house, start their new job, travel or retire they will be happy. But it doesn’t work that way.

If you truly want to be happy, here’s what to do.

You are not just a victim of circumstances or your emotions. Think about it this way. If you are in a horrible argument with someone, and the person you most respect enters the room, what will happen? The fighting will likely stop immediately, your mood will change, and so will your behavior. You do have control, and you are the one who decides how you will face the day!

We are never disappointed unless we have expectations. If you base your emotions on the need for certain things to happen, you will likely be let down most of the time. Instead, work hard, and treat everything good that happens as a bonus for which you can be thankful.

Don’t get too wrapped up in issues involving friends or family. We are each responsible for our own lives, and even when someone makes a bad mistake, it is not up to you to make things better. And remember that worry doesn’t help anyone!

You might not be satisfied with your income, but there’s no point complaining about it. Improve your diploma so that you can get a better job in the future. You may have an incurable illness, such as diabetes, but the fact that it’s incurable doesn’t mean that it cannot be managed.

Laughter and tears are part of living. But do you find enough time for laughter? I am not

asking if you experience lots of good times. Of course we should laugh during the happy times.

Erma Bombeck is known for her humorous books, but she wrote one that covered a more

serious topic: cancer in children. Erma talks with lots of children with cancer and learns an important life lesson from them.   2  

She tells the experience of 15-year-old Jessica from Burlington, VT. Jessica’s leg was amputated (锯掉) at the knee because of cancer. Jessica tells about playing soccer. She kicked the ball hard and it flew off in one direction while her artificial leg flew another way. Then “the tall, pretty person that I am,” she said, “sat on the floor in laughter.”

   Jessica may not have laughed about her cancer, but she laughed about dealing with its results.  3   

Then there is the story of 17-year-old Betsy. She made her way to the radiation room(放射室) for

her regular radiation therapy. As usual, she dropped her hospital coat and, wearing only her birthday suit, climbed onto the table and waited. After a couple of moments she began to realize something disturbing: the extra people in the room were not the medical students she had thought, but rather painters giving an estimate on painting!    4   And like Jessica, her ability to laugh helped her to deal with one of the most difficult things a young person can endure(忍受) — cancer.

There is a time to weep and a time to laugh.    5    And you’ll smile at the end.
