题目内容

When you buy a T-shirt, or a fur coat in a store, it often carries a label (标签),telling who made it or from which store it was bought . Indeed, some labels show the dress is famous and it is very expensive, so buyers secretly wish they might be carried forever. On the other hand, buyers who deal with the cheapest products would be pleased to do away with labels entirely.
However, there is another label more important than the one showing from which store the dress was bought. When a person buys a fur coat, or a jacket from a store, a label telling what the product is made of should be carried on it.
This label is required by law. Besides telling what the product on show is made of, the label should be in clear English and be where one can find it easily. The information on the label must be the truth.
The reason for this label is that most buyers today aren’t expert enough to know exactly what kind of fur or material they buy. The buyer must believe in the store that sells the products or in what the labels say.

Every day we meet people in a number of business and social situations. And the way we meet and greet them creates an impression. It’s important to do so in a proper way, no matter whether you are introducing yourself to someone, or introducing two people. To keep you aware of this, we have gathered tips on how to make a proper introduction.

◎Always stand when making an introduction.

When you are seated and someone comes up to greet you, make the effort to stand up. By doing this, you show respect for yourself and for the other person.

◎Always keep eye contact while making an introduction.

Many people are not aware of the value of this simple action. When you make eye contact, you are giving a confident image.

◎Always introduce a person of lesser authority to one of greater authority. The most important thing to remember is to say the most important person’s name first.

For example, when introducing your supervisor to a job candidate (求职应征者), you would give your supervisor’s name first. “Bob Jones, may I introduce Susan Lee, who has just graduated from ABC University?”

◎In a situation where rank is unimportant, an introduction is based on sex and age. A man is presented to a woman and a younger woman to an older woman.

What if you find yourself in a situation where you have forgotten the other person’s name? Start with a handshake and reintroduce (再介绍) yourself. When doing this, you will usually cause the other person to do the same.

However, if the other person does not take your suggestion, it is OK simply to apologize and let the person know that you cannot remember her or his name. This is not the ideal situation, of course, but it does happen to all of us. The other person should be forgiving.

The article gives you advice on ________.

A.how to make a self-introduction

B.how to make a proper introduction

C.how to leave a good impression on people

D.how to greet people in social situations

According to the passage, people will think you are ________ if you don’t make eye contact with them.

D.You should give your boss’ name first

If you forget the other person’s name, you’d better _______.

A.ask him/her directly

B.apologize first and then ask him/her

C.shake hands with the person and reintroduce yourself

D.consider his age first

Eight – year – old Jesse Abrogate was playing in the sea late one evening in July 2001 when a 7-foot bull shark attacked him and tore off his arm. Jesse’s uncle jumped into the sea and dragged the boy to shore. The boy was not breathing. His aunt gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (人工呼吸) while his uncle rang the emergency services. Pretty soon, a helicopter arrived and flew the boy to hospital. It was a much quicker journey than the journey by road.

Jesse’s uncle, Vance Folsenzier, ran back into to the sea and found the shark that had attacked his nephew. He picked the shark up and threw it onto the beach. A coastguard shot the fish four times and although this did not kill it, the shark’s jaws relaxed so that they could open them, and reach down into its stomach, and pull out the boy’s arm.

At the Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Dr. Ian Rogers spent eleven hours reattaching Jesse’s arm. “It was a complicated operation,” he said, “but we were lucky. If the arm hadn’t been recovered in time, we wouldn’t have been able to do the operation at all. What I mean is that if they hadn’t found the shark, well then we wouldn’t have had a chance.’

According to local park ranger Jack Tomosvic, shark attacks are not that common. “Jesse was just unlucky,” he says, “evening is the shark’s feeding time. And Jesse was in area without lifeguards. This would never have happened if he had been in area where swimming is allowed.’

When reporters asked Jesse’s uncle how he had had the courage to fight a shark, he replied, “I was mad and you do some strange things when you’re mad.”

What was the boy doing when the accident happened?

A.Feeding a hungry shark.      B.Jumping into the rough sea.

C.Dragging a boy to the shore. D.Swimming in a dangerous area.

In which way did the boy’s uncle help with the operation?

A.By finding his lost arm.     B.By shooting the fish.

C.By flying him to hospital.       D.By blowing into his mouth.

How was his uncle in time of danger?

    A.Careful. B.Brave.   C.Optimistic.  D.Patient.

Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?

Jesse’s uncle was mad.

Jesse was playing in area where swimming is allowed.

It was very difficult for the doctor to reattach Jesse’s arm.

Evening is the shark’s feeding time.
