解答 One evening two young man were walking in the street together.
They tried to find a chance to steal everything. The clock struck
twelve.Most of the people were in bed.Quickly they came to a
house and it seemed∧everyone in the house had fallen asleep.
Standing at the front gate, one man whispered in English to the
other at a low voice,"You wait here and I'll go around to the back
door and then get into the house."Suddenly out of the house ran a
dog, barked at them. The two men was very frightened and ran away
as fast as possibly.They didn't stop until they get to a lonely place.
The man said to the other in a surprise,"It's too bad, but I hadn't
thought what the dog could understand English."
3.在seemed后加that    考查固定句型结构   it seemed/seems that意为:好像,似乎;故在seemed后加that.
4.at改为in    考查固定短语    in a low voice意为:低声说;故用in.
5.barked改为barking     考查现在分词    此处在句中作伴随状语,由于动词bark与其逻辑主语 a dog构成主谓关系,故用现在分词barking.
6.was改为were    考查主谓一致   由于此处的主语The two men 指的是两个男人,故用were.
7.possibly改为possible    考查固定搭配    as…as possible意为:尽可能…;故用possible.
8.get改为got    考查时态    根据上文可知,此处讲的是发生在一天夜里的事情,应使用一般过去时;故用got.
9.去掉surprise之前的a   考查固定短语     in surprise 意为:惊奇地;故去掉surprise之前的a.
10.what改为that  考查连接词     连接代词what通常在名词性从句中作主语或宾语,而此处用来引导宾语从句,由于该从句中不缺少任何成分,故用连接词that.

5.While I was in 9 th grade,I built a circuit (电路装置) for the traffic system of our city. After getting the first prize.I got this valuable advice from my father;"Do whatever interests you,and don't let the work challenge you, make sure you are challenging that work."
I have always preferred the projects which are challenging and related to real life problems.I clearly remember building a shipping program several years ago.I divided the whole project into several small sections. When I understood it clearly, used my brainstorming skill on it,and gave some basic ideas. Then I asked my professor for help before jumping into coding (编码).At first,I did not know how to ask questions correctly and always asked the question"How do I do it?"As I  kept working and discussed with my professor,I became more comfortable and those"how"questions soon turned into"what if I do this and that"types of questions.
It took me four days to write the code. The desire to solve the problem kept me sleepless all nights brainstorming in even greater details.Every time I saw my program running smoothly,I exploded with joy.I still remember the last day of my work.I was getting some problem and didn't know what to do.At that moment,a man came in to clean. He has headphones, and he was dancing while cleaning the room.Seeing this,I burst out laughing. That moment calmed me.I regained energy and interest and started to work again, and soon I fixed the problem.
My success in the project proved that breaking up a large problem into small parts could help find a possible solution.Discussing the problem with others was also very beneficial. Now I have gained the confidence to attempt any kind of project.

6.Scientists have discovered a real-life"moral compass"in the brain that controls how we judge other people's behavior.The region,which lies just behind the right ear,becomes more active when we think about other people's misdemeanor or good works.
In an experiment,researchers were able to use powerful magnets to disturb this area of the brain and make people temporarily less moral.The study discovers that our sense of right and wrong isn't just based on upbringing,religion or philosophy-but also by the biology of our brains.
The researchers used a non-invasive technique to disrupt the area of the brain.The technique generates a magnetic field on a small part of the skull which creates weak electric currents in the brain.These currents interfere(干扰) with nearby brain cells and prevent them from firing normally.
One story described a man who let his girlfriend walk over a bridge he knew was unsafe.The girl survived unharmed.Under normal conditions,most people rate the man's behavior as unacceptable.But after getting the magnetic pulse,the volunteers tended to see nothing wrong with his actions-and judged his behavior purely on whether his girlfriend survived.
Another story described two girls visiting a chemical plant where one girl asks her friend to put sugar in her coffee.The friend uses powder from a jar marked toxic (有毒的)-but as the powder turns out to be sugar.Volunteers with a disrupted moral compass tended to rate the girl's behavior as permissible because her friend was not injured-even though she was aware the powder came from a jar labeled toxic.
Throughout the experiment, irresponsible or deliberate actions that might have resulted in harm were seen as morally acceptable if the story had a"happy ending".

C.whether the powerful magnets can disrupt the area
D.how researchers spot the area with powerful magnets
31.What do the two stories want to tell us?B
A.People who like playing jokes on others is controlled by"moral compass".
B.People judge others'behavior acceptable or not by the"moral compass".
C.Whether people's behavior is acceptable or not is judged by a happy ending.

3.Many of us may be eating food containing GM(转基因的) ingredients without realizing it.Are GM foods safe for people?Can they help solve the poverty problem?They have been the subjects of a hot debate.
This debate is related to increasing challenges from rising climatic change,population growth,urbanization,and natural resource consumption.According to the Food and Agriculture Organization,food production needs to increase by 60percent by 2050in order to feed 9billion people.Scientists and policymakers are searching for effective ways to gain nutritious food,for today and future.Unlike previous agricultural methods (such as the Green Revolution),GM crops are to fight food safety and poverty challenges.
The great expansion of GM crop varieties over the last two decades can be seen easily.The total area devoted to GM crops has increased 100times from 1.7million hectares in 1996to 170million hectares in 2012.Developing countries now grow more GM crops than developed countries (in terms of area),largely driven by Brazil's rapid adoption of GM crops.China is home to about 4percent of the total global area devoted to GM crops.Beans,corn,and cotton are main global GM crops,while China's focus is on cotton,papaya,and poplar.
Recently,a scientific study shows that GM crops are safe for people and the     environment.According to a 2010report on the safety of GM crops by the EU,"the main conclusion to be drawn from the efforts of more than 130research projects,covering a period of more than 25years of research,and involving more than 500research groups,is that biology methods,are not more risky than traditional planting technologies,for example."Other international and national scientific bodies,such as the World Health Organization,have reached the same conclusion.
24.As for GM crops,what do people mainly focus on?C

10.An astronaut is required to make some repairs to the outside of the International Space Station. After a successful repair, the astronaut finishes the task.Unfortunately,a tool flies off into space. The tool has now become space junk,high-speed pieces of objects(物体) going around the Earth at 17,000 kilometers per hour.
While humans produce an unbelievable amount of waste on Earth,we might not think too much about space junk. But NASA says there are probable millions of objects, both small and large, going around the Earth in a giant cloud of junk.
Space junk got its start in the middle of the twentieth century,at the very beginning of the space race, when satellite began to be launched to go into orbit (轨道) around the Earth. So far, space junks include waste spaceships and waste spaceship parts, rocket fuel containers and even pieces of paint.Believe or not, there are millions of tiny pieces of paint floating around Earth's orbit.Heat or crashes usually cut off paint from spaceship and turn them into space junk.Because there are so many objects flying around up there, there's concern that crashes between space junks will only produce more of them.Scientists are worried this is already happening.
Anything travelling at a high speed in space would cause a considerable amount of damage to a spaceship if a direct hit happened.Even a small piece of paint is capable of making a quarter-inch hole into the window of a space station. The good news for astronauts is that most space junk is located between 550 and 625 miles above the Earth--the International Space Station flies in orbit at 250 miles high, while spaceships usually only reach 375 miles above the Earth.Space programs are also working on rocket designs that limit the amount of space junk produced during a launch.
For those of us on the Earth,is there a possibility that space junk could fall back to the ground?Everything in orbit will finally be pulled back down by Earth's gravity-when that happens depends on how high the object is and how fast it's going. The higher the object is,the longer the object will take to fall. These objects could stay in orbit for thousands of years. As for the risks of getting hit on the head, fortunately, most objects burn up on their way back to the Earth, and no one has ever been killed by space junk.
44.Where is space junk from?D
A.Pieces from satellites.
B.Fuel coming from rockets.
C.Waste from the space station.
D.Spaceships that no longer work.
45.What are scientists worried about space junk?C
A.It may rub off the spaceship's outside paint.
B.It may be pulled back by gravity and hurt people.
C.More space junks will probably be produced in crashes.
D.The space station's windows may be blocked by space junk.
46.Where is the passage probably taken from?C
A.Astronauts'travel diary.
B.Scientists'research report.
C.Popular science magazine.
D.Adventure novel.
5.After numerous warnings over the years,you thought coffee probably had a negative effect on your health?Perhaps the drink is not so bad after all.
The new study,conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI),has been published and suggests that coffee does not have a harmful effect on your health.Researchers suggest,based on data examined,older adults who drink a lot of coffee,have a lower risk of death when compared to their non-drinking coffee peers.
The team of researchers conducting the study analyzed data on 400,000U.S.men and women,aged 50to 71years; the individuals had participated in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study.This study started in 1995-1996and was tracked until the day a participant passed away,or Dec.31,2008.
According to a press release on the report, researchers shared that coffee drinkers are"less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections, although the association was not seen for cancer."
Results indicated participants that drank three or more cups of java a day reduced their risk of death by 10percent.Based on the findings that both caffeinated and non-caffeinated coffee found similar results,researchers are thinking caffeine is not the protective ingredient(原料),although which ingredient in coffee might be,they are not sure.
Researchers indicate that despite these observational findings, they caution it is not clear whether or not drinking coffee actually extends life expectancy.
"Coffee is one of the most widely consumed drinks in America,but the association between coffee consumption and risk of death has been unclear.We found coffee consumption to be associated with lower risk of death overall,and of death from a number of different causes,"said Neal Freedman,Ph.D.,Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics,NCI.
"Although we cannot infer a relationship between coffee drinking and lower risk of death,we believe these results do provide some comfort that coffee drinking does not adversely affect health,"Freedman said.
Dr.Cheryl Williams,a registered dietician,told ABC News,"Overall,more research needs to be done to truly understand the compounds in coffee and their biological activity and effect on health,"said Williams.
