More than 40 US missiles (导弹) exploded in Baghdad as dawn broke over the Iraqi capital on March 20. US President George W. Bush began his war against Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein without an approval from the United Nations Security Council (联合国安理会).

The attack came less than two hours after Bush's deadline for Saddam to leave his country had passed.

Following the air strikes, Iraq fired missiles into Kuwait. The US began its ground war the same day. On Friday, a US helicopter crashed in Kuwait and all 16 American and British soldiers on board were killed.

About 2.50 000 US hoops are stationed(驻扎) around Iraq. There are also troops from other countries, including Britain and Australia, fighting alongside the American soldiers. Their force is much bigger than that of the Iraqi military.

The US soldiers have all been given vaccinations(接种疫苗) in an attempt to protect them from possible biological weapons that may spread deadly germs(细菌). They also have gas masks(防毒面具) in case Saddam orders his soldiers to use chemical weapons.

Many countries including China, Russia, Germany and France have tried to solve the conflict through peaceful means. They want to avoid loss of life and have called for an end to this US-led war.

China is demanding military action against Iraq stop immediately. Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said it wards the US to seek a peaceful political solution(解决).

Kong said the attack on Iraq was carried out despite opposition from most governments and people across the world. Plus, he said, the US bypassed the UN Security Council and broke the basic international law.

Since the war broke out, many more anti-war protests have taken place in the US, Britain and elsewhere.
