Text 2 W: What shall we do today? M: I don't feel like going out. The weather is so wet. W: Personally, I'm planning to visit a clothes show, but I would love to stay with you. Text 3 W: Did you hear the weather report? M: Yes, they said it would be slightly above freezing tomorrow. Text 4 W: At first I thought this glass was yellow, but now it looks green to me. M: You were right the first time. It's this blue light that makes everything here look different. Text 5 W: So you are going to Smissi again this weekend. M: Yes, but I can't make up my mind whether to go by road or rail. The trains generally lessen effort, but it's a terrible walk from the nearest station to the village. Text 6 W: Tickets, please. Have you got a ticket, young man? M: Sorry, I was in a hurry. But how much is it to the next stop? W: One and a quarter dollars. M: Here you are. W: Thank you. Text 7 W: Having visited so many different countries you must be able to speak several different languages. M: I wish I could, but French and English are the only ones that I have ever learned to speak. W: Have you ever tried Chinese? M: Yes, but I gave up halfway. The Chinese characters are too difficult to practise. W: How about Japanese? M: I attended class for two or three months, but the more I learned, the more difficult the grammar became. W: Do you like travelling? M: No, I don't, but I have to. I work in the sales department. W: If only all the countries used the same language, then I would be able to work in diferent countries. M: But to tell you the truth, I hope not. As a matter of fact, I am quite interested in language learning. Text 8 M: Good morning. Can you tell me the time of morning flights to Paris, please? W: Yes, certainly. There are daily flights at 7:50 and 11:05. M: And when do they arrive in Paris? W: The early flight arrives at 9:00 and the mid-morning one at 12:15. M: So the journey takes an hour and ten minutes. W: Yes that's correct. But remember, you must be at the airport one hour before. M: Of course. And in Paris, is there a bus to the city center? W: Yes, there are buses every half hour and the journey takes about 40 minutes. M: Fine. How much is a single air ticket? W: Single…$ 59. M: Right. I'd like to book five tickets, please, on the early morning flight to Paris on June 10th. W: Ok, fine Text 9 W: Are you busy tomorrow night? I'm going over to the Workers' Club for volleyball if you'd like to come along. M: Isn't that far away? W: Not really. If you take the No. 3 bus, you can get there in ten minutes. And if volleyball doesn't interest you, they've got a huge indoor swimming pool, a weight room, and indoor track. It's a great place to meet people. M: Now that you mention it, it would be nice to get away from the computer center for a change, and I really should get some more exercise. Working up a sweat in a ball game or the weight room would be nice. I've got so fat. W: Of course. Look at meyou're not the only one. In high school I had a lot more time to do sports activities. I was never a great athlete, but I had enough time to play tennis with my friends regularly, and during the winter I'd go skating almost once a week at a place near my home. But after starting college all that extra time disappeared, because I was always hitting the books. Now what little time you have must be used in doing exercise. At least the club is open until 12 a. m. M: I guess it's worth a visit. Did you say you're going tomorrow night? W: Yeah. M: OK. I'll come too. How about meeting me in front of the cinema at eight, and we'll catch the bus there? W: Sure, see you then. Text 10 Okay, Okay. Let's begin. Hello, everyone. My name's Karl Roberts, and I'll be your teacher for this class, Intercultural Communication. Uh, to begin with, please take a look at the introduction in front of you. As you all should know by now, this class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:50 p. m. We will be meeting in this room for the first half of the course, but we will be using the research lab every other week on Thursdays in Room 405 during the last two months of the class. Uh, this is the text for the class, beyond language. Unfortunatelly, the books haven't come in yet, but I was told that you should be able to buy them at the bookstore the day after tomorrow. Again, as you see on your course outline, grade is determined by your performance on a midterm and final test, weekly quizes. Uh, a research project, and classroom participation. Mr office hours are from 1:00 to 2:00 p. mon Wednesdays, and you can set up an appointment to meet with me at other times as well. |
