New York-born Billy Joel was encouraged by his father to learn the piano from the age of four. He played in various local groups before he turned solo, releasing (发行) the first album “Cold Spring Harbor” in 1972. But business problems drove him down to California where he performed in bar sand hotels under the name Billy Martin. A breakthrough crone when Columbia records signed him and released “The Piano Man” album in 1973, the title track becoming his first hit single.
The next few albums sold poorly but they established Joe's fame as a writer of memorable melodies (旋律) and story-telling lyrics (歌词). His massive commercial breakthrough came in 1977 with the release of “The Stranger”, becoming Columbia's best-selling record ever.
In the early 80's, Billy Joel appeared in the hit list with “Tell Her About It”,“Uptown Girl” and “An Innocent Man”. His marriage to top model Christine Brinkley in 1985 put him into family life, but 1989's “We Didn't Start the Fire” and its parent album “Storm Front” (Both US No.1st) found him back in top form. A step forward to that is the single “The River of Dreamers” released in 1993 which is again a wonderful show of his gift as an excellent music and lyric writer.
