You don't need millions to be happy. In fact,at The Happiness Institute in Australia,a couple of
hundred dollars may be enough.
The institute opened its door last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying
$200 an hour for lessons on how to feel great.
"You can actually increase your happiness levels. That's what we teach," said Timothy Sharp, founder
of the institute.
Experts say that only about 15 percent of happiness comes from income, assets and other financial
factors. As much as 85 percent comes from things such as attitude, life control and relationships.
Most of us are significantly better off financially than our parents and grandparents, but happiness
levels haven't changed to reflect that.
Studies show that once the basic needs of shelter and food are met, additional wealth adds very little
to happiness.
     Many decades ago,the "sage of Baltimore,Maryland",editor H L Mencken,defined (下定义) wealth
as earning $100 more than your "wife's sister's husband".
Behavioral economists now say part of the reason we are richer but not happier is that we compare
ourselves to people better off materially.
"The argument is that if you want to be happy there's a very simple thing you can do:
Compare yourself to people who are less well_off than you-poorer,smaller house and car," said
Sharp.
The Happiness Institute aims to show you how to overcome these unhappiness factors by focusing
on "more than just your bank account".
"If I compare myself to Bill Gates then I'm always going to be down," said Sharp.
A better thing to compare with,he said, might be Kerry Packer,Australia's richest person who has
had a kidney transplant (肾脏移植) and heart surgery in recent years.

A. You can increase your happiness levels by attending the classes at The Happiness Institute.

D. Both Bill Gates and Kerry Packer are examples of those who are extremely rich but
     obviously unhappy.

"You know, these cups bring to mind a tea quote (说法) I heard. " Mary's aunt said.
She poured tea. There were four of them and there were four totally different cups on the table. They
grabbed their tea cups.
     "What quote?" Mary asked.
"Well, maybe I should rather say it is a story," Aunt said, "I heard there was this wise teacher who
took all his students for tea. They were surprised that all the cups on the table were different. They all
took a cup and started drinking their tea, each looking at the cups of others. The teacher let them do that
for a while and then said: "Do you notice your behaviors? You are all looking at each other's tea cup and
I can see some of you with the chipped (残缺的) ones are even envious of the finer cups of others. Is
this not so?" The students agreed, amused by their own behaviors.
"You may have wondered why you all had different cups, but I put them here on purpose. You see —
they represent life itself. Life is, like that tea — and the cups are like the physical circumstances of your
life. You all got the same thing in your cup — tea. And yet you cannot truly enjoy it in your envy of
another's cup. It's just the same with life. You forget to enjoy your own life when you concentrate on
envying the circumstances of someone else's life.
So now, close your eyes, and taste your own tea. Really taste it. And tell me — Did it matter from
which cup it came?"
Aunt finished telling her short tea story and they all sat in silence for a while, savoring (品味) their tea. A sleepy fly buzzed past; a bird sang in the tree. And it really did not matter one bit from which tea cup
they drank.
1. When the students found that they had different tea cups, they ______.
A. were satisfied with their own cups
B. were angry about the chipped cups they had been given
C. asked the teacher to get new cups for them
D. were curious about the difference between the cups
2. From the text, we can conclude that ______.
A. the teacher prepared different tea cups for each student
B. the teacher should have given the students the same tea cups
C. the chipped tea cups were actually made of better materials
D. each student took their rime to choose a cup they liked
3. By comparing the cups to the physical circumstances of people's lives, the teacher meant that people
______.
A. shouldn't focus on the physical circumstances only
B. can't change their physical circumstances
C. should try different ways of life
D. should always be prepared for strange things in life
4. The teacher's message to the students was that ______.
A. life is actually hard and boring for everyone
B. it is natural to be envious of the lives of others
C. everyone should learn to enjoy life

You're in a department store and you see a couple of attractive young women looking at a sweater. You listen to their conversation:

You love Jay Chou's songs and you can sing some quite well. So you make a video of your
performance and post it online for your friends to see. But what if this led to something beyond
your wildest imagination-a career in music?
Canadian teenager Justin Bieber, 16, has just had the magical experience: He posted homemade
videos of his versions of songs by American singer Chris Brown online for his relatives. He received
a phone call from Brown, telling him how much he liked his performance. His singing eventually earned
him a fan base and a record contract. After releasing a popular EP (extended play密纹唱片) record
in November 2009, his album My world 2.0 came out last Tuesday.
Bieber sings ballads and songs about puppy love. But is he just another gooey (甜腻的) teen idol?
David Malitz, a columnist with the Washington Post, doesn't think so. "If we truly want the best for
American children, let us pause and give thanks for Justin Bieber," he writes. "After years of humdrum
bubblegum (乏味的摇滚舞曲) from Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, the 16yearold has thrown a
candycoated wrench (扭转) into Disney's heartthrob (甜心) assembly line (生产线) by giving young
fans something worth screaming their lungs out for: lovable pop songs."
From a boy who grew up below the poverty line with his divorced mom to a star who caused
nearriots (近乎失控) in shopping malls, even Bieber himself can't believe his overnight fame, although
his kind of success is becoming more and more common in the Internet era.
Interested in hockey (冰球), the national sport of Canada, the boy once put up pictures of players
on the walls of his bedroom. He dreamed of being a hockey star and used to practice signing his
autograph (签名). He doesn't need practice now. He signs autographs, if the girls can get close enough,
as a music star.

4. What's Justin Bieber's hobby?

You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give and
give without making time to fill your own needs, then it's likely you will bum out, or feel upset. When you
take and take without giving anything back, you never feel fulfilled, so you are always searching for ways
to fill the void in your life.
The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving is to know and then live by your
values. I break values up into two groups which I call being and having values. Your being values are the
character traits (特点 ;特征)  of the ideal person you would like to be. I suggest to my clients that they
choose three being values that they are willing to make a commitment(信奉; 信仰) to live by. An
example of some being values are: kind ,loving, generous , inspirational, peaceful, wise  and even
powerful. By acting on these values you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by
being a positive role model. Mastering being these character traits becomes your life purpose.
Your having values are, the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be
companionship , achievement , support , being  valued  or financial  security. This is what you receive.
You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions
in your life.
When you make a commitment to live by your being values, it becomes easier to make conscious
choices rather than reactionary ones. If your usual pattem is to talk about your problems, you could
choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, meditate (沉思 ) ,or set
a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a
responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be this is the
key to personal power.
When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, you reinforce (加强)
your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way
other people think of you.
1. The main purpose of this passage is to          .
A. persuade the readers to make a commitment
B. explain to the readers what personal values are
C.inform the readers how to be truly happy
D. instruct the readers how to make wise choices
2. According to the text, living by your being values, you would       .
A. gain a lot of power
B. form positive personality
C. seek all human virtues
D. fill your own needs
3.The underlined word "void" in paragraph I means "          ."
A. a feeling of emptiness
B. an absence of one's mind
C. a break of continuity
D. a state of confusion
4. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Having values are better than being values;
B. A calm person does not choose to complain.
C.The way other people think of you decides who you are.
D. A responsible person does not care about financial security.
