题目内容
In order to understand human beings, it is necessary to think of them as part of the whole living world. Our vital humanity depends not only on the complex biological structure which has been developed through the ages from very simple beginnings, but also upon the great social inventions which have been made by human beings, continued by human beings, and in turn give human beings their reputation as builders, thinkers, statesmen, artists and prophets(预言家).
No doubt each of these great inventions—language, the family, the use of tools, government, science, art, and philosophy—has the quality of so combining the potentialities of every human nature, and each can be learned and continued by any group of human beings, regardless of race and the type of civilization within which their progenitors lived; therefore, a newborn baby from the most primitive tribe in New Guinea is as basically capable of graduation from Harvard, or writing a sonnet(十四行诗), or inventing a new form of radar as a baby born on Beacon Hill.
However, it is also believed that once a child has been brought up in New Guinea, Boston, Leningrad or Tibet, he symbolizes the culture within which he is raised, and differs from those who are raised elsewhere so deeply, and that only by understanding these differences can we reach an awareness which will give us a new control over our human destiny(命运).
So believably human nature is naturally neither good nor evil, but human beings are born with different combinations of inborn potentialities, and it will depend upon how they are brought up—to trust and love and experiment and create, or to fear and hate and obey—and what kind of human beings they can become. We have not even begun to develop human potentialities, and by continuing modest but continual study of human behavior, we can learn intentionally to create civilizations within which an increasing percentage of human beings will realize more of what they have it in them to be.
Without any doubt, human life is given meaning through the relationship which the human being’s conscious goals have to the civilization, period, and the country in which one lives.
At times, the task may be to fence a wilderness, to bridge a river, or to bring up sons to continue a young group. Today, it means that we should take upon the task of creating one world in such a way that we both keep the future safe and leave the future free.

It is the duty of every man to work. The life of a lazy man is of no use to himself and to others. The man who is too lazy to work is the man who is generally most ready to beg or to steal. Every boy, when he is young, should learn how to do some useful work.
But it is not enough that a boy should learn some kind of work. He should put his heart and soul completely into his work, and not waste his spare time. “Work while you work and play while you play” is as good a rule for young people as for the old!
There is no better help to diligence (勤奋) than the habit of early rising, and this, just like all other good habits, is most easily formed in youth. There is an English saying, “Lost time never returns”. This means that everybody must be diligent and make good use of his time. One must study hard when one is young so that one may make great progress, succeed in life and become useful to one’s country. Those who are diligent will never become beggars. Therefore, we can say that diligence is the mother of success.
