Understanding Disabilities

There are around 650 million people in the world that have disabilitiesyet most people are still quite ignorant about it.

(1)What do you think of when you see the word, ‘disability’

Wheelchairs? White sticks? The Paralympics? 1 The legal definition of disability is that someone has a physical or mental impairment that has a great and longterm bad effect on his or her ability to carry out normal daytoday activities.

This affects about 650 million of us, worldwide. 2 Most become disabled during the course of their life. So maybe the term TAB (Temporarily AbleBodied) is better for people who are not disabledbecause we may not stay that way forever.

(2)3

Imagine not being able to seeor not being able to walk. Think of all the things that would be different. How can I get my education? What about my future? Would my friends still want to hang out with me? Will strangers laugh at me in the street? Can I get my own place? What job can I do?

Clearlyhaving a disability can affect many things in a person's life.

(3)Disability and the law

4 It is illegal and extremely unpleasant to discriminate (歧视) against someone who is differently abled. The label ‘disabled’ is not always helpful. Even if someone meets the legal definitionthey may not see themselves that way. Instead of thinking about what is wrong with those peopleor noticing what they can't dowe should look at how we like to liveand try to make it possible for everyone to join in.

After all—what is normal5 But better understanding would be a start.

AHow can the disabled find better jobs?

BHow does disability affect people?

CPeople with disabilities don't need pity.

DMost of us have never really thought about it.

EWe should consider more for people with disabilities.

FOnly 17% of people with a disability are born with it.

GThere are laws to prevent people with disabilities being treated unfairly.

【题目】Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?

As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it's not easy to change later in life.

Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money.

According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket and the snail.

The ant-works first

Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don't care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk.

The cricket-fun first

The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn't think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.

The snail-lives under pressure

The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure whether they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

1People with the character of the snail would like to ________.

A. enjoy life at the moment without thinking much about the future

B. put work before everything else

C. live a luxury life at all costs

D. take the risk of investing a large sum of money

2Our beliefs and values are affected by the following except ________.

A. society B. our family

C. education D. money

3This passage mainly talks about ________.

A. the relation between man and insects

B. the spending nature of people

C. the insects in nature

D. the problems with dealing with money

4Which of the following has the character that the author prefers?

A. The ant. B. The cricket.

C. The snail. D. None of the above.

【题目】1 We’ve all heard about the power of our attitude, and that it's our attitude that determines how much we succeed in life.

1. Identify and understand what you want to change. The first step towards change is clearly understanding what needs to be changed. 2 When it comes to changing your attitude, you need to do an honest and in-depth self-evaluation so you could point out exactly which of your traits need to be improved or totally changed.

2.3

We all need to know that what we're trying to accomplish can in fact be achieved; that we can be more optimistic, more social or more patient. Find someone who has the kind of attitude that you want to have, and let his or her life give you inspiration and encouragement to move beyond your temporary failures in your journey towards becoming a better person.

3. Think about how your attitude change will affect your life. To be able to overcome all the difficulties that lie ahead of you in your journey towards self betterment, you need to figure out exactly what this supposed change could bring to your life. Will changing your attitude mean a happier family or social life? Will a change in your attitude mean a more successful career or business? Fix your mind on the things that would come as a result of your attitude change and you will have a greater chance of reaching your goal.

4. Choose the right company. As they say, “Bad company corrupts good character.” You don't expect yourself to be able to change if you go on surrounding yourself with people who possess all the negative traits that you want to change. Consider befriending new people, especially those who are optimistic and have a healthy attitude towards life. 4

5. 5 Often, the greatest obstacle between us and our goals is ourselves or our inability to trust in what we are able to do. If you don't believe in yourself or believe that you or your life can change, it just won't happen—you will either never start, or give up quickly so you won't have even given yourself the opportunity to succeed.

A. Believe that you are able to change.

B. Look for a role model.

C. You will see that your effort to change will be easier with these kinds of people as friends.

D. Setting clear goals is the key to success in any endeavor.

E. Our personalities and attitudes are developed through our relationships and experiences.

F. It is right to try hard to have a strong mind.

G. Our attitude towards life determines life's attitude towards us.
