My Unforgettable Travel

Besides going by car, there are three other ways to get across the country:planes, trains and buses.Air travel is the most expensive of the three but in many ways the easiest and most comfortable. There are hundreds of flights a day criss-crossing the country, and it is easy to make an order. You will get to your destination(目的地)quickly and find the services(服务)at the airports excellent. There will be connecting bus services to the center of town, car rental agencies and porters(出租公司和搬运工).

Traveling by train is cheaper than by airplane. In the past, train service was poor but in recent years the government has changed the service with AMTRAK, the nationalized train system. You can travel first or second class.Your ticket is for the journey only, sleeping and dining conditions will be extra. The most inexpensive way to travel is by bus.Continental railways and Greyhound can buy special tickets that allow you unlimited travel for a certain period of time.In this way you can stop along the way to visit the places that interest you most.

If you do travel long distances, be ready for the time changes. There are four time zones(时区)in the continental USA, starting on the East Coast with Eastern Standard Time(EST), then moving west to Central Standard Time(CST), Mountain Standard Time(MST).If you travel east to west, you gain one hour each time you enter a new time zone.

  Seeing America by Car

A good way to see the USA is by car.Americans love their cars and in the past fifty years they have developed a vast network of roads and freeways to help them reach their destinations.

As few visitors have their own cars, renting one is the next best thing. You will need a valid driver’s license(it is best to have an international driver’s license)and either international credit cards(信用卡)(Diners, American Express), or a deposit(存折).

You should start out with a working knowledge of the road. You travel from state to state and this can be very exciting to a newcomer. For example, in some states it is legal(合法)to turn right at a red light if there is no closing traffic, while in other states you will be fined(罚款)for this action.

People can enjoy vast(广袤的)areas of wild beauty.Throughout the country, animal and plant life is now protected by law, Americans are learning to be conservationists(天然资源保护者).

Just the mention of the TOEFL, GRE and GAMT exams brings a thought of long hours of dull paper work. But that idea is becoming increasingly out of date. As planned, computerized tests will begin next year which will bring a series of changes from test psychology to scoring techniques.
From computer - equipped rooms, examinees will answer the questions on a computer. If they are sure about their choices, they can pass to the next question by pressing the entry (条目) “next”. Then another question will be randomly (任意地) selected from a vast test item bank and appear on the screen. After answering all the questions, examinees can choose the entry “quit” if they are not satisfied with their performance, or “score” if they want to see the result. Scores will be calculated immediately and appear on the screen. By that point, student's marks are official--there is no going back.
Since they greatly shorten the painful waiting process-which used to be two or three months, computerized tests have won worldwide popularity. Besides, there will be no rushing to the registration offices (登记处) for these exams. Computerized tests will be given every workday in an exam center with all three kinds of tests being held in the same room. All test takers need to do is to call the exam center and book their seats for a particular day.
In addition it will become technically possible to apply new testing procedures. In the past, each examinee had the same set of test items despite differences in their ability. Under a computerized system, however, if the computer judges an answer is right, a question of a relatively difficult nature will follow. But if an examinee continues to give wrong answers and is judged as un-qualified by the computer system, he will be automatically denied the chance to go further in the test.

There at a secondhand clothing store in Northampton Mass, my l4-year-old son, John, and I noticed the coat. While the other coats drooped (低垂), this one looked as if it were   41  itself up. The coat was beautifully made, with a Fifth Avenue label and an  42   price of $28, which was popular just then with   43  , but could cost several hundred dollars new. John tried it on and the  44   was perfect.

John  45   the coat to school the next day and came home with a big smile. “Did the kids like your coat?” I asked. “They loved it,” he said,   46   folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat. Over the next few weeks, a   47  came over John. Agreement replaced contrariness (作对) and   48   discussion replaced fierce argument. He became more mannerly and  49  , eager to please. He would generously lend his younger brother his tapes and lecture him   50   his behavior. When I mentioned this   51  to his teacher and wondered what caused the changes, she said laughing. “It   52   be his coat!” Another teacher told him she was giving him a good mark not only because he had earned   53   but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran   54  a friend. “Could this be John?” he asked surprisingly,   55  John’s new height, appreciating the cut of his coat and holding out his hand, one gentleman to another.

John and I both know we should never   56   a person’s clothes for the real person within them.   57  , there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see and for   58  what is on the inside with what is on the outside.

The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast landscape   60  all the doors are open. And he could picture himself walking through those doors wearing his wonderful, magical coat.
