The art of living is to know when to let hold fast and to let go for life is a paradox(自相矛盾的事物).People always say:“ A man comes to this world with his hand clenched(握紧),but when he dies, his hand is open.”

Surely we ought to hold fast to life, for it is wondrous, and full of beauties. We know that this is so, but all too often we recognize this truth only in  our backward glance when we remember what was and then suddenly realize that it is no more.

A recent experience re-taught me this truth. I was hospitalized following a severe heart attack and had been in intensive care for several days. It was not a pleasant place. One morning, I had to have some tests. The required machines were located in a building at the opposite end of the hospital, so I had to be wheeled across the courtyard on a gurney(盖尼式床).As we emerged from our unit, the sunlight hit me. That’s all there was to my experience. Just the ________ of the sun. And yet how beautiful it was------how warming, how sparking, how brilliant! I looked to see whether anyone else loved the sun’s golden glow, but everyone was hurrying, most with eyes fixed on the ground. Then I remembered how often I do the same, life’s gifts are valuable------but we are too careless of them.

Here then is the first pole of life’s paradoxical demands on us: never too busy for the wonder and the awe of life. Be reverent(虔诚的) before each dawning day. Hug each hour. Seize each golden minute.

Thirty minutes later, when the passenger’s ring for service sounded, the air hostess flew in a flurry(慌了神). She was kept so busy that she forgot to deliver him the water. As a result, the passenger was held up (耽误)to take his medicine. She hurried over to him with a cup of water, but he refused it.

In the following hours on the flight, each time the air hostess passed the passenger she would ask him with a smile whether he needed help or not. But the passenger never paid heed(理睬) to her. When he was going to get off the plane, the passenger asked the air hostess to hand him the passengers’ booklet (留言本). She was very sad. She knew that he would write down sharp words, but with a smile she handed it to him.

Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. He was a natural motivator. He told people how to look on the positive side of the situation.

One day I went up to Michael and asked him, " How can you be a positive person all of the time?"

Michael replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or ... you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood."

"Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life."

Several years later, Michael was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Michael was released from the hospital. I saw Michael about six months after the accident.

Michael told me, "When they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action."

" There was a big burly(魁伟的)nurse shouting questions at me.”

"She asked if I was allergic(过敏的)to anything.”

“'Yes’, I replied.'”

“The doctors and nurses stopped to wait for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity'."

“Over their laughter, I told them, ‘I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead!’"

Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
