Uncle Tom gave little Vicki Black a birthday gift one week before her birthday. He told her not to open it until her birthday. She knew her mother wouldn't tolerate any disrespect to the kind man who helped them out after Vicki's father passed away. Besides, Vicki didn't want to get Uncle Tom angry. When school was done, she raced home. Walking into the room, again, she shook the present, but she heard nothing. Holding her breath, she opened the box and looked inside. Seconds later, she cried. When Mrs Black saw the box, she said angrily, "Didn't I tell you to leave it alone?"

Vicki sobbed (抽泣) and said, "Mommy, you don't understand."

"Don't cry to me. You have missed everything now, just because you couldn't wait," Mrs Black accused. "What will Uncle Tom think now?"

"Uncle Tom gave me nothing," Vicki cried and handed the empty box to her mother. "He played a trick on me."

Mrs Black said doubtfully, "Uncle Tom is not like that. You must have dropped it."

Vicki kept crying. Only a rapid knock on the door made the house quiet. It was Uncle Tom. He looked at the empty box. "You have already done it? I told you to wait for your birthday."

"You didn't give me a gift." Fresh tears filled her eyes.

"I try to give you something. I know your birthday is a special day. I tell myself to give you something valuable to last your whole life. I think hard and get an idea to give you an important lesson. If you open it on birthday, I see you learn. Then I will make a big party to celebrate, Maybe next year you listen, and then you will understand the gift better."

When I was a kid, my siblings(兄弟姐妹) and I used to have ice cream for dessert.Every day, we would choose which ice cream flavor to have, whether to eat it in a cone or a bowl. Then we would happily wolf down our treat(款待) as fast as we could.

Once, though, when I was probably about 10 0r 11, our grandpa came to visit. Grandpa always had a unique view on things. We never develop the skill of appreciating what we have. If we learn to recognize this pattern and change it, we can raise our kids a little differently, giving them the tool of tasting their proverbial dessert, which could lead to a happier life for them.

What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the opportunity to enjoy what's in front of you, the pleasure will last longer and be more rewarding than if you rush through life always trying to get the next treat. It's a lesson that, I think, has made my adult life happier, as well. These days, when I want something, I wait as long as I can before I allow myself to have it. Then, when I finally get it, I make sure to treasure it as long as possible, because I know that, no matter what it is, it will be gone all too soon.

“I’d like to be at a healthier weight,” a friend told me. “But we just don’t have the money to buy expensive diet foods and there isn’t enough money to join a gym.” Many people feel that way — that a healthy diet and exercise plan is out of reach because of their high cost. Don’t lose hope! We’ll be looking at ways to make healthy choices without spending too much money.

First you don’t need to buy the expensive pre-prepared “diet foods.” Back in the early 1970s when I started housekeeping, 90% of the food I bought was ingredients. Very few things were preprocessed (预处理的). Now 90% of the food you find in the store is quick food. That’s a bad thing.

Besides, your body is short of nutrients (营养物质). You will be driven to eat more to try to make up for the low quality of the food you are eating.

And then there are the chemicals the producers add to the quick meals to make them palatable. If not, the stuff would taste like cardboard and you wouldn’t enjoy it. However, these chemicals certainly aren’t good for your health.

What’s the answer? Buy whole ingredients and give up the expensive, low nutrition, processed foods. Do the cooking yourself and you will have control over what is in your food — and it will cost less, too.
