题目内容

One Sunday, a picture in the newspaper touched me. A young woman stood in front of a totally destroyed home. A little boy stood beside her with his head     . Holding her skirt tightly was a tiny girl, eyes wide with        and fear.

With growing       I noticed that their sizes of each family member closely       ours. This would be a good opportunity to     my children, so I explained their difficult     to my seven-year-old twins and three-year-old Meghan.

“We have so much, but these poor people now have nothing,” I said, “we’ll       what we have with them.”

I brought three large boxes and placed them on the living room floor. Meghan watched seriously       the boys and I filled one box with canned food.

While I      our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and      some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched       as the boys piled up useless toys in the box.

“I’ll help you find something for the little girl,” I said to her.

The boys placed the toys they had      to donate into one of the boxes while I filled the third box with clothes. Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, faded, much-loved doll     tightly to her chest. She       in front of the box, pressed her little face into Lucy’s face, gave her a       kiss, then, laid her gently on top of the other toys.

“Oh, honey,” I said. “You       to give away Lucy. You love her so much.”

Meghan nodded, eyes shining with tears. “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy.       she’ll make that little girl happy, too.”

I stared at Meghan for a long moment,        how I could teach the boys the lesson she had just taught me.

It’s easy to give what we don’t want any more, but       to let go of things we cherish, isn’ t it?       , the true spirit of giving is to give with your heart.

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career(职业).

I wasn't an excellent student because I didn't do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn't have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn't the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn't too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she'd give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn't often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early morning with the children.

One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification(资格证书)if I wanted to work with children. I didn't think I would be accepted because I didn't take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a parttime course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I've got a fulltime job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren't top of the class at school.

A.She decided to attend a parttime course.

B.She found a fulltime job.

C.She was fed up with children.

D.She needed a rest after working extra hours.

4.What has the author learned from her own experiences?

A.Qualifications are necessary for a career.

B.Hard work makes an excellent student.

C.One must choose the job she likes.

D.Less successful students can still have a career.

One afternoon after school had finished , Peter and Jane were walking along the street. Suddenly they heard a big noise.

“Come on” shouted Peter.“That sounds like an accident. Let’ see what’s happened.”

They ran to where the noise came from. As soon as they got there, they could see what had happened. A small car had knocked into the side of a truck. The accident had happened in a quiet street with only four houses in it. Peter and Jane were the first ones to reach the site. No other people came.“We must be the only ones who saw the accident,” said Jane. They found that both the car driver and the truck driver were hurt.

“Peter,” said Jane,“ Run back down the road to Mrs Day’s house. Ask her to call the policemen and the ambulance. Hurry. I’ll stay here.”

Off went Peter as fast as he could. There was nothing Jane could do but wait. She knew that when people were hurt in an accident, they shouldn’t be moved. It wasn’t long before the police car and the ambulance arrived. The policeman got the car door open and they carried the man out. Then they got the truck driver out. The men weren’t seriously hurt, but they were both taken to the hospital. The policemen thanked Peter and Jane, “You were very good to act so quickly when you saw the accident.
