The Netherlands on Monday launched its first-ever “intelligent bicycle”, fitted with a set of electronic devices (设备) to help bring down the high accident rate among elderly cyclists in this country.

The intelligent bicycle runs on electricity. Its seat shakes when other cyclists approach from behind, while the handlebars do the same when obstacles appear ahead to inform cyclists to pay attention to the danger. It also has a cradle (置物架) in which a computer can be inserted (插入), to wirelessly connect and “talk” to the bicycle through a particular application. The computer also flashes a bright signal if there is an approaching obstacle in the bicycle’s path, like a tree, or if another cyclist comes up from behind intending to pass.

A commercial-available bicycle is expected to be on the market in the next two years and should sell for between 1, 700 euros to 3, 200 euros per bicycle. It weighs about 55 pounds but researchers are working on making the on-board systems smaller.

‘‘Accidents often happen when cyclists look behind them or get frightened when they are passed at high speed,” said Maurice Kwakkernaat, one of the scientists involved in the project, “The on-board system technology has already been at work in the automotive (自动的) industry”.

“More and more elderly people are using a bicycle，not only for short distances，but also for longer distances,” Dutch Environment Minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen said, “This type of bicycle is truly needed in the Netherlands because it will help us bring down the number of elderly people who are injured every year and allow them to continue enjoying cycling,” she said．

I was 20 years old when my mother passed away.It was the first real blow that life had dealt me，and I thought I would never recover.Then，by the time the following spring came，the pain was almost bearable and again I could find pleasure in the miraculous reward of nature.

As is well-known that birds are our friends. But the large number of birds have been killed for food. The other day I was walking in the woods while a shot was heard. Hearing the shot, the bird in the trees flew to all directions. A bird was injured badly and looked sadly. Finding the bird injured, so I decided to take it home. At home I take good care of it. When it recovered, I returned itself to the woods. I hope something should be done to prevent birds from killed.

Few kids today are taught the value of empathy (同感；同情心). It seems so hard for people to show their love and care toward others and to actually understand what they are going through.

As a child I was taught to go out of my way to make someone else happy. My mom would tell me to say at least one kind word to someone else every day. I admit that it wasn’t very easy to do. Started by private citizens who believe that everyone should have the right to take showers, Lava Mae seeks to reach those who lack these necessities.

We turn retired public transportation buses into bathrooms because we believe that for the thousands of men, women and children living on our streets, a shower can be the first step towards change.

Our partners

Each day we partner different local non-profit organizations providing services to the homeless.

The local government tries their best to deliver our services. For example, get buses and seek access to water.

The private sector has provided us with goods and services, in addition to other support and funding that make our service possible.

Our mission

To deliver dignity(尊严)and unlock opportunity for the homeless—one mobile shower at a time. Fundamental to this mission are three beliefs: First, everyone has the right to be clean. Second, those experiencing homelessness can’t access jobs and housing or maintain health and happiness if they can’t get clean. Third, with hygiene(卫生)comes dignity; with dignity, opportunity.
