As our sweet 5 continued, my eyes glanced 6 the restaurant, stopping at a(n) 7 cou-ple sitting at the small corner table. 8 drew my thoughts to them was their undisturbed silence. It seemed that a sad emptiness 9 their little corner. As the conversation between Michael and I varied from 10     to whispers, and much to my surprise, this couple's  11 even caught my attention. How sad, I thought, not to have anything to   12  What if that happened to us?

I stood up and felt ashamed by the 19 act of connection I had witnessed. The man's gentle caress(爱抚)of his wife's tired fingers filled not only what I had20  recognized as an emotionally empty corner, but also my heart. Theirs was not the uncomfortable silence on first date.

No,theirs was a comfortable, relaxed ease, a gentle 21  that did not always need words to express 22  They had probably 23 this hour of morning with each other for a long time, and maybe today wasn't that different from yesterday, 24 they were at peace

with that,and with each other.

Maybe, I thought,it wouldn't be so bad if someday that was us. Maybe, it would be kind of nice.

Nick Harris said he didn't know where he found the strength, but somehow he managed to lift a car off the 6-year-old girl last week, earning himself the title of su?perman. "I just think it's a Christmas miracle," Harris said.

Harris said he had tried several times and again to recreate (再现)the surprising show of strength because instinct (本能)sent him running to the 6-year-old girl's aid. Harris was dropping off his daughter at Eugene Field Elementary Friday morning when he saw a car back out of a driveway, pinning (使不能动弹)the girl under its tire. That girl turned out to be his daughter's best friend.

"I was expecting her to have bad injuries," Harris said. "I've had broken toes, because a car just backed over my foot. And here this whole car was on top of her. I wasn't expecting it to turn out as wonderful as it did. ,, The first grader was flown to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City by an air ambulance (救护车), but didn't have to stay long.

"They all call me superman now," Harris said. "I'm just a dad. I'm just a dad that was in the right place at the right time. And I was finally able to help and I did something good.
