The best selling children’s book, Pipilu Sending You 100 Lives, has been adapted into a homonymous play that will be put on for the first time next March and tour around 50 cities in China.

The book was adapted by the Hangzhou based Star Dream Factory.

“We don’t want to descend to the average children’s dramas that are overly eager to please the kids,” said Huang Qin, director of Star Dream Factory. “We want to provide something practically useful and mystically entertaining.”

The original book by Chinese children’s book writer Zheng Yuanjie focuses on safety tips for kids. With Zheng’s usual candor and simplicity, the book avoids sugar-coating reality. Instead, it illustrates the potential dangers in everyday life and provides possible solutions.

Zheng recalled that when he saw his new-born baby in the hospital, the first thought that hit him was to do his utmost to guarantee his son’s safety.

“Safety is of the greatest importance to a human being,” said Zheng. “If the person is gone, nothing else will matter.”

According to Zheng, there is no preaching or soapboxing in his book. He said that he just wanted to talk and tell the plain truth to the children in an easily understandable way.

This line of thought will be echoed in the theatrical reproduction, said director Guo Yan. She also said that the play will place emphasis on multimedia effects and the interaction with the families.

“Theatre may not ensure the children a path to professional esteem and better jobs in society, but it does have the power to give them strength (at heart),” said Huang Qin.

Huang also calls for consistent attention to child safety, pointing out the lack of universal education and effective legal channels.

The show is expecting an estimated audience of more than 100,000 people during its domestic tour in the upcoming year.

Parents of teenagers will have heard something like this: Leave me alone or I told you, we didn’t do anything at school. Maybe they’ve had a door or two slammed on them. And maybe they feel that all of their interactions are arguments.

Sarah loves hanging out with her friends. That’s not surprising. Sarah is 16 and it’s typical for teenagers to spend time with their peers, especially their pals. So it makes sense when she gets mad about having to leave get-togethers with her friends early to meet her parents’ rule that she must stay at home after 9 p. m.

“Sometimes my parents don't let me do anything,” Sarah says. “It seems that their rules are for a 10-year-old child, not a 16-year-old one.” Sarah admits she often responds to her parents’ rules by openly complaining about them. And to get her pride again, she sometimes does what she wants behind her parents’ backs.

Sarah’s unwillingness to obey her parents may remind you of your own behavior toward your mom and dad. And the good news for young people is that it is normal for teens to rebel against their parents. “All teens go through a process of separating from their parents in order to gain some independence and a sense of identity,” says John Brightman, a child and adolescent psychologist. “Sometimes this process is accompanied by some anger, defiance(反抗), and eye-rolling. But this stage of shifting relationships is an important part of growing up.”

Shree Bose is one of the most impressive kids graduating from Fort Worth Country Day High School this year. Bose has a large circle of friends, and there’s one who you may have heard of: President Obama. He has twice publicly recognized her achievements in cancer research and spoken with her in the Oval Office.

If that isn’t enough, Bose recently gave a TED Talk about her work with the cancer drug Cisplatin, which also won her first prize at the Google Science Fair and recognition as one of Glamour magazine’s Young Amazing Women of the Year.

After watching her grandfather struggle with liver cancer, Bose was determined to help out in any way she could. As a high school student, though, her scientific choices were limited. She reached out to various hospitals and research centers, but doctors turned down her requests because they felt she was too inexperienced medically.

Only the North Texas Science Health Center respected her determination and chose to guide her. The results were amazing.

Bose chose to study a protein and its reaction with the cancer drug Cisplatin. She noticed that when she prevented this protein from growing, Cisplatin was allowed to begin destroying cancer cells once again.

“My project not only contributes to the understanding of the relationship between the protein and Cisplatin, but also suggests a newer, more effective treatment for patients who resist Cisplatin,” Bose said.

Bose’s achievements aren’t limited to the lab, though. She was also captain of her swim team and editor-in-chief of her school paper.

Bose is currently getting practical experience at the National Institute of Health and she’ll be attending Harvard in the fall. She plans to study molecular biology and go to medical school. Eventually, she would like to be a doctor.

The snow cap of Mount Kilimanjaro, famous in literature and beloved by tourists, initially formed some 11,000 years ago, but will be gone in two decades, according to researchers who say the ice fields on Africa’s highest mountain shrank by 80 percent in the past century.

Lonnie G. Thompson, one professor from Ohio State University, said measurements using modern navigation satellites show that the oldest ice layers on the famous mountain were deposited during an extremely wet period starting about 11,700 years ago.The mountain appears in literature, most notably Ernest Hemingway’s “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and some ancient beliefs in Africa hold the mountain to be a sacred place.

But a temperature rise in recent years is destroying the 150-foot-high blocks of ice that gave Kilimanjaro its unique white cap.“The ice will be gone by about 2030,” said Thompson. The disappearing ice already has reduced the amount of water in some Tanzanian rivers and the government fears that when Kilimanjaro is bald of snow the tourists will stop coming.

“Kilimanjaro is the number one foreign currency earner for the government of Tanzania,” said Thompson. “It has its own international airport and some 20,000 tourists every year. The question is how many will come if there are no ice fields on the mountain.”

Africa was not alone in the global drought. Thompson said other records show that civilizations during this period collapsed in India, the Middle East and South America.

Researchers put markers on the ice field blocks in 1962 and Thompson said measurements using satellites show the summit of the ice has been lowered by about 56 feet in 40 years. The margin of the ice also has moved back more than six feet in the past two years, much smaller than before.

“That’s more than two meter’s worth of ice lost from a wall 164 feet (50 meters) high,” said Thompson. “That’s an enormous amount of ice.”

A. will disappear in two centuries

B.first developed some 11,000 years ago

A. center B. Top C. edge D. back
