you're always easily upset. You're very stubborn(顽固的), but you aren't very ambitious. You usually
live for today not for tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.
If you sleep curled up(卷曲), you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of
yourself and so you're often defensive. You're shy and you don't normally like meeting people. You
prefer to be on your own. You're easily hurt.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths
and weaknesses. You're usually careful.  You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel anxious,
but you don't often get depressed. You always say what you think even if it annoys people.
1. According to the writer, you naturally show your secret and real personality __________.
A. only in a normal night

What makes a house a home?
Not size,of course.I've been in some of the grandest houses in America, and it's clear that no one
lives there.Earlier this year,I had dinner in a mud hut in Ethiopia, where we sat on chairs next to the
hostess' bed-a home that had more warmth than any house I've been in since.
Now John Edwards is exploring what makes a house a home in his justreleased(发行)Home. The
Blueprints of Our Lives.There Edwards writes,"This isn't a book about houses;it's a book about
homes.About the values they rest on,the dreams they are filled with, and the people they have shaped
."Edwards writes,"The houses and circumstances are different, but much of what you find inside will
be familiar."
Whether you're sitting in an airport right now, waiting to fly to your childhood home for Thanksgiving,
or in your own home waiting for the relatives to arrive, you know what he's talking about.
We've lived in our townhouse for 21 years. It's home now.The loose windows that shake in the wind.
The fireplace so shallow it holds only one log.The kitchen window that offers a view of the world passing
by.It's where friends sit on the kitchen counter drinking wine while dinner is being fixed.I lived there for
only 18 years, but it will always be my true home.Even the lamp in the west living room window, which I
could see far down the road when driving home late at night, still shines.
While all this talk about childhood memories can be warm and comforting, home is whom you're with,
not where you are.As Edwards writes,"Home is family.Home is safety.Home is faith."
     Happy homecoming.

Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut highway crashes.
Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using
a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think
that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is
planning to repeat Japan's success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other
patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway
crashes.
Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents,
according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas
where speed-related hazards (danger) are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average
speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used
to seeing the painted bars.
Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they
really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway
speed and the number of traffic accidents.

1. On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that ________.

A. they should avoid driving fast.
B. they are driving in the wrong lane
C. they should slow down their speed
D. they are coming near to the speed limit

2. The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former ________.

A. can keep drivers awake
B. can cut road accidents in half
C. will look more attractive
D. will have a longer effect on drivers

3. What does the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety do?

A. change the road signs across the country
B. try out the Japanese method in certain areas
C. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons
D. repeat the Japanese road patterns

4. What of the following is true about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?

A. They are suitable only on broad roads.
B. They are falling out of use in the United States.
C. They cannot be used successfully to traffic circles.
D. They are ignored in a long period of time.

5. What's the best title of the passage?

A. a new pattern for painting highways
B. a new way of highway speed control
C. a new way of training drivers
D. a new type of optical illusion

Almost all theme park accidents can be prevented. Here, based on theme park safety, are some tips to help
you and your family stay safe on your next visit.
Stay Cool, and Don't Get Burned
Heat causes more pain and injury at theme parks than all the world's roller coasters (过山车) combined.
Water is your best friend in helping p.revent heat-related illnesses in theme parks. Choose water rather than
juice and soft drinks whenever you get thirsty. Put on a waterproof sunscreen before you enter the park. A
hat or sunglass- es can help, too.
     Stay In to Stay Safe
On any theme park ride, keep your rear (后部) on the seat, your hands on the grab bar (扶手) and your
feet and knees inside the car. If there is no grab bar, keep your hands on your lap (膝部). If you are riding a
"floorless" coaster, relax your legs. Don't kick them out to the side or front. Do not get on or off a ride until
you've been given the okay by an attendant to do so.
     Help the Kids
If you are visiting with a child, tell them how they should be have. Meanwhile, parents also know the
following rules, too.
★Tell them to stay seated, to hold the grab bar or put their hands in the laps.
★And never put a crying child on a ride. If your child starts to cry, let others pass you in line until your
child is calmed. Or, gently exit the queue and find something more relaxing to do.
★Let them take plenty of breaks.
"Kids get tired," said TPI reader Matt Johnson, a father of four. "Tired kids make parents even more tired.
And tired kids and parents get hurt-physically and emotionally." He advises that parefits plan a mid-day break,
perhaps a swim back at the hotel, to avoid mid-day heat and crowds.
"You will see many families having a miserable time while you are refreshed and having a great evening."
1. The best title for the passage would probably be _____.
A. Theme Park Safety Tips
B. How to Protect Yourselves Better
C. Full Preparations Before Visiting Theme Park
D. Theme Park Accidents
2. The underlined word "miserable" likely means _____.
A. comfortable
B. very unhappy
C. pleasant
D. wonderful
3. We may infer from Matt Johnson's words that _____.
A. he doesn't like to visit a theme park with his children

D. parents should plan a mid-day break or a swim back at the hotel to avoid heat and crowds.
Summer is the ideal time of year for one of my favorite outdoor activities, hiking (徒步旅行). It is
much more than just a great Workout. You get to be outside of the confines of a gym and be together
with nature. You breathe in the fresh, clean air while the city life you endured all week just fades away.
You are suddenly transported somewhere else. You are suddenly in a place where you can appreciate
the untouched, simplistic beauty of nature. The trees are green, the wild flowers are growing and the
woods are filled with activity. Once you experience it, you're hooked.
Whether hiking in the deserts of Arizona or the mountains of Alberta, you suddenly realize you are
not alone and there is something much bigger at work. There is a realization that life is precious and you
think deeply about your life.
Another wonderful part of hiking is that you can participate at any level and it is, for the most part,
free. It is a great way to escape the rat race, even during the week. If you have any problems you need
to solve, hiking is really good for clearing your head and removing stress.
If hiking sounds intimidating to you, it is essentially walking on a whole new level. Experts have
spoken about the benefits of walking for years. Walking doesn't stress your legs as much as running and
countless studies agree walking leads to weight loss and better health. It is good for your heart, reduces
illness and has even been shown to enhance your thinking. So why wouldn't you want to do it?
1. What disappears for someone who is hiking?
A. Green trees.
B. Beautiful nature.
C. City life.
D. Precious things.
2. Once you take up hiking in nature as something you do, you______.
A. feel much bigger than before
B. love it and want to do it often
C. wish you lived outside of the city
D. look for new hiking places, like Arizona
3. How do you feel after you've begun hiking?
A. Anxious.
B. Thoughtful.
C. Lonely.
D. Free from stress.
4. How is running different than walking?
A. Running is harder on the legs.
B. Running is better h/r weight loss.
C. Running is good for a person's heart.
D. Running is a cause for improved thinking.
