Ever wonder how much a cloud weighs? What about a hurricane? A meteorologist£¨ÆøÏóѧ¼Ò£© has done some estimates and the results might surprise you.

Let¡¯s start with a very simple white puffy cloud¡ªa cumulus cloud(»ýÔÆ). How much does the water in a cumulus cloud weigh? Peggy LeMone, senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, did the numbers. ¡°The water in the little cloud weighs about 550 tons,¡± she calculates. ¡°Or if you want to convert it to something that might be a little more meaningful...think of elephants.¡± Assume£¨¼ÙÉ裩 an elephant weighs about six tons, she says, that would mean the water inside a typical cumulus cloud would weigh about one hundred elephants.

The thought of a hundred elephants¡¯ worth of water floating in the sky begs another question¡ªwhat keeps it up there?

¡°First of all, the water isn¡¯t in elephant-sized particles(΢Á£); it¡¯s in tiny tiny tiny particles,¡± explains LeMone. And those particles float on the warmer air that¡¯s rising below. But still, the concept of so much water floating in the sky was surprising even to a meteorologist like LeMone. ¡°I had no idea how much a cloud would weigh, actually, when I started the calculations£¨¼ÆË㣩,¡± she says.

So how many elephant units of water are inside a big storm cloud¡ª10 times bigger all the way around than the ¡°puffy¡± cumulus cloud? Again, LeMone did the numbers: About 200,000 elephants.

Now, come to the calculations for a hurricane about the size of Missouri and the figures get really massive. ¡°What we¡¯re doing is weighing the water in one cubic meter theoretically pulled from a cloud and then multiplying by the number of meters in a whole hurricane,¡± she explains.

The result? Forty million elephants. That means the water in one hurricane weighs more than all the elephants on the planet. Perhaps even more than all the elephants that have ever lived on the planet.

1.The weight of ________ is NOT mentioned in the passage.

A. a cumulus cloudB. a storm cloud

C. a hurricaneD. a tornado

2.How did Peggy LeMone feel about the result of her calculations?

A. She found it not convincing.

B. She thought it needed further calculations.

C. She considered the calculations inaccurate.

D. She was quite surprised at it.

3.What can be inferred from the passage?

A. A storm cloud weights about 200,000 elephants.

B. The water in the cloud is in very tiny particles.

C. There are less than forty million elephants living on the earth.

D. The water in a hurricane weights more than that in any other kind of cloud.

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A. Surprising Results

B. Elephants in the Sky

C. How Much a Cloud Weighs

D. How Much a Hurricane Weighs

The Winner¡¯s Guide to Success

How do successful people think? What helps them to make success? To find out the answers, an American scholar recently visited some of the most successful people in America. 1.

Be responsible for yourself

Sometimes you may want to blame(Ôð±¸) others for your failure to get ahead. 2. You¡¯re saying, ¡°You have more control over my life than I do.¡±

Live life ¡°on purpose¡±

Almost all successful people live life ¡°on purpose¡±¡ª they are doing what they believe they should and want to do. When you live your life on purpose, you¡¯ll try your best to do your job or study as well as you can. You love what you do and you can find pleasure in what you do.

Write a plan

It is very difficult trying to get what you want without a good plan. 3. A good plan is like a map to you. Without this ¡°map¡±, you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the ¡°map¡± you¡¯ll enjoy the ¡°trip¡± and get what you want in the shortest possible time.

Be willing to pay the price

Nothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard ¡ª even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won¡¯t get anything valuable.

Never give up

4. When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.

5.

Once an American writer was writing a novel. He could not have a good ending for his book until one night when he had a very good idea. He was so excited that he made a phone call to one of his best friends. ¡°I¡¯ve got a perfect idea,¡± he said, ¡°I¡¯ll put it down later and show it to you.¡± But he never did, because he died that night. His book was left without a perfect ending. So remember, do what you can right away. Never delay at all.

A. It is just like trying to drive through strange roads to a city far away.

B. It seems to us that everyone knows this. But it is easier said than done.

C. Some people achieve success much later in life because they fail to realize earlier the importance of hard work.

D. In fact, when you say someone or something outside of yourself is stopping you from making success, you¡¯re giving away your own power.

E. Someone else¡¯s opinion of you doesn¡¯t have to become your reality.

F. Don¡¯t delay.

G. Here are some keys to success that they give.

The latest Chinese ¡°god song¡±(an Internet term to describe pop songs that spread virally through the Internet(Ïñ²¡¶¾Ò»Ñù´«²¥¿ªÀ´) is still making debates(ÕùÂÛ) between those who view it as a milestone for Chinese pop music going global and those who regard it as a bad image of China.

Last week, Little Apple, written and performed by the Chopsticks Brothers, won the AMA International Song Award and the duo performed the song at the 2014 American Music Awards in Los Angeles. Another Chinese pop singer, Zhang Jie, won the International Artist Award.

But while fans of these singers are thinking highly of the awards(½±) and the performance by the Chopsticks Brothers at the AMA celebration, there are others who are less excited. They have questioned the value of the awards and what effect it will have on Chinese culture¡¯s ¡°going abroad¡±, saying it may leave foreign audiences with a poor impression(Ó¡Ïó) of Chinese pop music, and even Chinese culture.

The Little Apple phenomenon, both home and abroad, can be more easily understood and judged if we look at it from a business view rather than a cultural view. The professional promoters behind the duo have developed a clear strategy(²ßÂÔ) to promote the duo and their works, not just this particular song. Little Apple was originally released(·¢ÐÐ) to promote the duo¡¯s film Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon.

From the very beginning a marketing strategy was used to promote(ÌáÉý) the song, which immediately went viral on the Internet due to its repetitive rhythm(Öظ´µÄÔÏÂÉ)£¬easy-to-remember lyrics(¸è´Ê), simple and funny dance and, most importantly, grass roots (²Ý¸ù) nature. The video accumulated(»ýÔÜ) more than 1 billion bits on China¡¯s major video websites.

Although the song was generally disliked by music professionals who criticized(ÅúÆÀ) it as ¡°musical junk food¡±, Little Apple¡¯s popularity nationally paved the way(Ϊ¡ÆÌƽµÀ·) for promoting the duo internationally.

1.The writer¡¯s attitude to the song of Little Apple is ________.

A. opposed(Ïà·´µÄ)B. negative(Ïû¼«µÄ)

C. objective(¿Í¹ÛµÄ)D. critical

2.What do the underlined words ¡°the duo¡± refer to?

A. Little AppleB. Chopsticks Brother

C. Zhang JieD. American singers

3.We can learn from the passage that ________.

A. Little Apple¡¯s popularity is also a success of marketing strategy

B. Little Apple is generally thought nothing by the AMA

C. Little Apple is really popular with all people in China

D. Little Apple was originally released as a pop play on the Internet
