　Charles Drew, a young black doctor, became an expert in the field of blood and blood transfusions（输血）．He discovered a way of isolating（分离）the liquid part of the blood, called plasma, from whole blood．Plasma could then be changed into powder and stored a certain period of time．During World War II blood plasma was badly needed．Drew's discovery had been most timely, and many thousands of lives were saved on battlefields all over the world．
