I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.

Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed(解散). As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible (负责任) for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized(强调) the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating(欺骗) themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously(认真地) about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.

Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued(继续) to believe that I had cheated on the test.

The story took place(发生) exactly ____ .

   A. in the teacher’s office  B. in an exam room

   C. in the school D. in the language lab

The girl wanted to borrow a pen, because ____ .

   A. she had not brought a pen with her        B. she had lost her own on her way to school

   C. there was something wrong with her own  D. her own had been taken away by someone

The teacher saw all this, so she asked the boy ____ .

   A. to go on writing his paper   B. to stop whispering

   C. to leave the room immediately   D. to stay behind after the exam

The thing(s) emphasized in her talk was(were) ____ .

   A. honesty B. sense of duty     C. seriousness D. all of the above

The boy knew everything ____ .

   A. the moment he was asked to stay behind    B. when the teacher started talking about honesty

   C. only some time later    D. when he was walking out of the room

【小题1】B

【小题2】C

【小题3】D

【小题4】A

【小题5】C

解析:

【小题1】故事发生在考试进行期间,故选B。

【小题2】由“She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write.”可知她的笔坏了。

【小题3】由“Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room…”可知考完试后,老师让他留下(stay behind)。

【小题4】由“. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized(强调)…”可知老师反复强调的就是cheat的反面诚实(honesty)。

【小题5】由最一段“Later on…”可知 。

Help

As policeman Bright stepped on to the little sailing boat, it rose and fell in the quiet water of the small fishing-port.

  “Anybody home?” he called.

“Yes, come on down, ”a voice cried. “Who is it?”

Bright went down the steps, and was met at the bottom by a young man with a large cigar fixed between his very white teeth.

“Good evening. I'm from the police station. Can I talk to you for a minute?”

“Of course, ”the young man said. “What s it about? ”

“About James Roland. He was murdered this afternoon. ”

The cigar almost fell out of the young man’s mouth.

“But that’s impossible. I was talking to him only this morning. He’s one of my closest friend. ”

“Yes, sir. I know. That's why I have to ask you some questions. Where were you between two and four o’clock this afternoon?”

  “Well-it was a fine day. About 12 o’clock , I went for a sail. Then, about two o’clock , the wind died out completely. Not a breath. Nothing. I couldn't move. ”

  “Don't you have an engine?”

“No, I don't. After about an hour, I got worried. ”

  “No radio?”

  “No.”

  “What did you do?”

“I found a large white blanket in the boat. I painted HELP on it in big black letters. Then I pulled down my flag, and put up the blanket instead.”

  “Did anyone see it?”

“I was very lucky. An hour or two later, a man in a motorboat came along. He said he saw my HELP sign from about three miles away. He helped me back into the port. ”

“Can I have this man's name, please?”

  “I didn’t ask. ”

“Very well, the name of his boat?”

“I didn't notice it. It was a red boat.”

“This part of the river is full of red motorboats, sir. ”

“I suppose it is. Sorry I can’t help you. ”

“Oh, but you can, sir. ”

  “Oh? How?”

“Just come along with me to the police station, if you will. Are you ready?”

  “But why?”

“Because I don’t believe a word of your story. ”

I shall never forget the day when the earthquake took place. The time was about 5 o’clock in the afternoon and I was driving along the road to take my daughter from school. Our plan was to go swimming together.I had finished my work at 4 o’clock and then gone to the post office. Then I’d stopped off at a shop in order to get some fresh fruit. We like to have some fruit to eat after our swim.

I was driving along a high road on my way to my daughter’s school.Over my road was another road, which was built like a bridge for cars coming to the other way.I was hungry so I put the bag of apples in the seat beside me and started to eat one.

Suddenly I saw the cars in front of me start to move from side to side. Then my car started to shake! I didn’t know what was happening.Perhaps? something had gone wrong with my car.I drove a little more slowly and then I stopped the car and at the same moment the road fell onto the cars in front of me.

I found myself in the dark.I couldn’t move. The bottom parts of both of my legs and my feet were hurting badly and I couldn’t move them. All around me was quiet. But above me I could hear shouts and a lot of noise. Then I memorized what had happened.I had been in an earthquake.

For about two hours nobody came.Luckily I could reach the bag of apples, so at least I had plenty to eat. Then I heard people climbing towards me.A team of people had come to see if anyone was under the broken road.I called out, “I’m here!” I heard a shout.Soon a stranger climbed to the side of the road near my car.“How are you doing?” he asked.

“Not too bad,” I said.“But my feet and legs feel as if they re broken.” “We’ll have you out of there just as soon as we can.” They didn’t get me out until the next morning.I had been in my car for fourteen hours.
