Here are two places that you may want to pay a visit to.

Sark, Channel Islands

This is one of the few places in the world where tradition still stands and the traditional ways are fully respected. The roads here remain not cemented(铺水泥), and are not even paved, and they are completely dark at night as there are no street lights. The residents of Sark are not allowed to drive cars, and if they do, they have to keep them outside Sark. The transportation you can use in Sark includes your legs, bicycles or a horse-drawn carriage. There are no motor vehicles here.

There are many activities you can enjoy here during the day, but when the night comes, the only thing you can do outside is look at the sky, which is really great. Because of the lack of artificial lights, the stars are very clearly visible.

Hyderabad, India

This southeastern city of India was the city where one of the wealthiest people in the world lived, Mir Osman Ali Khan. Now this city is the place where many global IT brands hold their head offices. But it hasn’t lost its historic looks, as it remains surrounded by ancient boulders(大圆石), and the modern houses recently built are surrounded by traditional gardens and lakes. From the great hotel Taj Falaknuma Palace you can see the Old City where the old Indian tradition is well preserved.

The best time to travel to Hyderabad depends on whether you are going for the city itself, or you wish to go to some of the festivals that take place here. The Hyderabad Literary Festival takes place from the 23rd to the 26th of January, while a festival celebrating various cultures, the Deccan Festival, happens from February 25 to March I.

2.If you go to Sark on Channel Islands, you can _____.

A. try driving on unpaved roads

B. go everywhere on a motorbike

C. use a horse-drawn carriage for free

D. enjoy the beautiful starry sky at night

3.Why hasn’t Hyderabad lost its historic looks ?

A. Because many old buildings remain there.

B. Because an ancient place still remains there.

C. Because many buildings that are like old ones are built there.

D. Because traditional boulders, gardens and lakes remain there.

Whether rich or poor, parents who have books in the home increase the level of education their children will attain, according to a 20-year study led by Mariah Evans.

For years, educators have thought the strongest predictor of attaining high levels of education was having parents who were highly educated. But, the study showed that the difference between being raised in a bookless home compared to being raised in a home with a 500-book library has as great an effect on the level of education a child will attain as the difference between having parents who are barely literate (有文化的) and having parents who have a university education.

Being a sociologist, Evans was particularly interested to find that children of lesser-educated parents benefit the most from having books in the home. What kinds of investments should we make to help these kids get ahead? The results of this study indicate that getting some books into their homes is an inexpensive way that we can help these children succeed. Evans said, "Even a little bit goes a long way. Having as few as 20 books in the home still has a significant impact on motivating a child to a higher level of education, and the more books you add, the greater benefit the children get.”

The researchers were struck by the strong effect having books in the home had on children's educational attainment even above and beyond such factors as education level of the parents, the father's occupation or the economic level of the country.

Having books in the home is twice as important as the father's education level, and more important than whether a child was brought up in a developing country or a developed country. Surprisingly, the difference in educational attainment for children born in developed country and children born in developing country was just 2 years, less than two-thirds of the effect that having 500 or more books in the home had on children.

1.In the past educators held a point of view that ______ .

A. children whose family had a library would possibly attain high levels of education

B. children who were born in poor families studied harder than those in rich families

C. parents’ level of education had nothing to do with their children’s levels of education

D. children whose parents are highly educated would attain high levels of education

2.What does the underlined word “motivating” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. Making somebody determined to do something.

B. Helping somebody to finish something

C. Making somebody ready to do something.

D. Preventing somebody from achieving something.

3.Which of the following has the most important effect on the level of education a child will attain?

A. The economic level of the country.

B. The father’s occupation.

C. Education levels of parents.

D. Having books in the home.

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A. The best investment parents should make.

B. Ways to make children get a higher level of education.

C. Reading books is good for the development of children.

D. Books in home have a great effect on children’s education levels.

Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, “In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence”. Given that this is the case, why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit?

First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn't in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.

Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决): stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name? calling, and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.

After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy (策略) for conflict resolution: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non?threatening questions to clarify the speaker's position. Then the two people should change roles.

Finally, students need to consider what they are bearing. This doesn't mean trying to figure out what's wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these:How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn't, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual(彼此共同的)solution.

There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn't mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.

I ALMOST failed out of college and it nearly broke my self-confidence. I had been at the top of my high school class, the total golden child. So when I decided that I wanted to attend Columbia University for graduate school, I was sure it would be close to impossible.

My goals were to prove to myself that my years of academic success in secondary school had not happened by chance and prepare for a career in children’s media. But first I had to get in.

So I enrolled (报名) in a GRE test prep course and threw myself into the class. The first part was pretty scary and by the third, I knew it wasn’t going to get any easier. I reconsidered my plan to take the GRE.

For the first time in my life, I considered how I should go about getting into graduate school. What were my special skills? Would any of them get me into graduate school?

I got a job working on a project sponsored by the dean’s (系主任的) office on campus and enrolled in a class. I had a new plan: Be a top student in the class while working on campus, get letters of recommendation from my boss and my professor, then hope that playing to my strengths like writing interesting papers would be enough for my application.

I worked my butt off (很努力工作) that semester. With finals approaching, I felt confident I would get an “A” in the course, so it was time for step two. I asked my boss to write a letter of recommendation. She immediately agreed. But my professor said no. She did not know me well enough and the semester was not completed. However, I decided I just would not take no for an answer. I asked if she would least write a short note unofficially supporting my application. After some uncomfortable conversations, she finally agreed. In the end, I got in!

I revisit that moment of persistence (执着) again and again. I have leapt into many other opportunities since then. Now I am starting a company born out of my graduate school research in children’s media. Our first product is a mobile game for teen girls that breaks down major life milestones (里程碑) into missions (任务). On its surface, the product helps girls connect with each other. But it also helps them develop the tools to live life without limits.

2. The underlined words “playing to my strengths” in Paragraph 5 probably mean “ ______”.

A. developing my physical power

B. making use of what I am good at

C. doing something to the best of my ability

D. doing something with all the strength I have

3.One of the reasons why the professor refused to write a letter of recommendation was that ______.

A. the author had almost failed out of college

B. the author was not a top student in high school

C. the author was not her favorite student in the class

D. the professor did not know enough about the author

4. The writer succeeded in getting into the graduate school because of ______.

A. her “A” grade

B. her strong letters of recommendation

C. her strong determination and her good plan to make herself stand out

D. her interest in children’s media and outstanding skills in writing interesting papers
