     In Europe, people make friends across the borders through town twinning.  Two towns in different
countries decide to become twin towns.
    Their citizens find pen-friends in the twin town.  They exchange newspapers and stamps.  The school
discuss teaching methods with the teachers in the twin town.  Officials visit the twin town for celebrations.  Ordinary citizens travel to the twin town, too, but not very often if it is far away.
     Sometimes schools even exchange school classes for two or three weeks! For example, Cerman
middle school students study for a while at the school in Britain, staying with British families.  A few
months later,their British friends come to study in Germany.
     Some towns even arrange exchange visits for theatre groups,chorus (合唱队 ) and  orchestras (管
弦乐队) .  Others send lectures to the twin town who tell the people there all about their own town, and
show photos and slides.
    Some towns organize exhibitions to show works of art, for example paintings by artists from their own
town.
    Many British towns are so pleased with the result of the twinning that they set out to find more than one
twin town!

    In the 1930's, a lot of people in the USA were out of work. Among these people was a man named Alfred Butts. He always has an interest in word games and so, to fill his time, he planned a game which he called“Lexico”. However, he was not completely satisfied with the game, so he made a number of changes to it and, in time, changed its name from“Lexico”to“Alph”and then to“Criss·Cross”. He wanted to make some money from his new game, but he didn't have any real commercial(商业性的)success.

  In 1939, Butts happened to meet a man called Jim Brunot who showed an interest in the new game. The two men worked together on developing the game and in 1984 it was offered for sale in the United States under its new name--“Scrabble”.

  At first, it didn't sell very well. In the first year it sold just 2,250 sets and by 1951 it had only reached 8,500sets a year.

  Then, in 1952 the manager of Macy's department store in New York, Jack Strauss, happened to play“Scrabble”while he was on holiday.      Two of the most popular nonfiction books of 2010 were about rock and roll stars. Just Kids is by
rock singer Patti Smith.It tells about her friendship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe in the 1960s and
1970s before they became famous. Life is the autobiography of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. It
is an honest and exciting look at the development of rock and roll and the wild times this famous band has experienced.
     Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand tells about a man named Louis Zamperini. She tells about his
extraordinary survival story after his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean during Would War Two.
     Stacy Schiff has received great praise for her book Cleopatra: A Life. It tells about one of the most
misrepresented and famous women in his story, Cleopatra. She ruled ancient Egypt about 2,000 years
ago.One critic said Ms. Schiff has brought Cleopatra to life again by unearthing her story from centuries
of lies.
