Money spent on advertising is money spent as well as any I know of. It serves directly to bring about a rapid sale of goods at reasonable prices, so setting up a firm home market and making it possible to provide for export (出口) at good prices. By drawing attention to new ideas it helps greatly to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it causes an increased need for labour, and is therefore a nice way to fight unemployment. It lowers the costs of many services: without advertisements your daily newspaper would cost four times as much, the price of your television program would need to be doubled, and travel by bus or subway would cost more.

And perhaps most important of all, advertising provides a promise of reasonable value in the products and services you buy. Besides the fact that twenty-seven Acts of Parliament(国会)govern the terms of advertising, no regular advertiser dare produce anything that fails to live up to the promise of his advertisements. He might fool some people for a little while through misleading advertising. He will not do so for long, for the public has the good sense not to buy the poor goods more than once. If you see product frequently advertised, it is the proof I know that the product does what is promised for it, and that it has good value.

Advertising does more for the good of the public than any other force I can think of.

There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television person declared that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He was telling us the real difference. Of course advertising tries to persuade.

If its message were nothing but information, that would be difficult to get more people to buy, for even the choice of the colour of a shirt is a bit persuasive (有说服力的)--advertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. But perhaps that is what the well-known television person wants.

By the first sentence of the passage the writer means that ___.

  A. he is fairly familiar with the cost of advertising

  B. everybody knows well that advertising is a waste of money

  C. advertising costs more money than everything else

  D. money on advertising is worth spending

In the passage, which of the following is NOT included in the advantages of advertising?

  A. Getting greater fame.              B. Providing more jobs.

  C. Raising living standards.           D. Reducing newspaper cost.

The writer thinks that the well-known TV person is _____.

  A. quite right in passing his judgment on advertising

  B. interested in nothing but the buyers' attention

  C. correct in telling the difference between persuasion and information

  D. obviously unfair in his views on advertising

In the writer's opinion, ________.

  A. advertising can seldom bring material interest to man by providing information

  B. advertising informs people of new ideas rather than wins them over

  C. there is nothing wrong with advertising in persuading the buyer

  D. the buyer is not interested in getting information from an advertisement

By far the most common difficulty in studying is simple failure to get down to regular concentrated work. This difficulty is much greater for those who do not work to a plan and have no regular routine (规律性事务) of study. Many students just do a bit of this subject or that, as the mood takes them, or letting their set work pile up until the last possible moment.
Few students work to a set timetable. They say that if they did work out a timetable for themselves they would not keep to it, or would have to change it frequently, since they can never predict from one day to the next what their activities will be.
No doubt some students are more willing to accept a regular routine than others. There are many who shy away from a self-controlled weekly timetable, and dislike being tied down to a fixed program of work. Many able students state that they work in cycles. When they become interested in a topic they work on it attentively for three or four days at a time. On other days they avoid work completely. It has to be admitted that we do not fully understand the motivation to work. Most people over 25 years of age have become used to routine, and the majority of real productive workers set aside regular hours for the more important areas of their work. The “tough-minded” school doesn’t fully accept the idea that good work can only be done naturally, under the influence of inspiration.
Those who believe that they need only work and study as the fit takes them have a mistaken belief either in their own talent or in the value of “freedom”. In fact, freedom from control and discipline leads to unhappiness rather than to “self-expression” or “personality development”. Our society insists on regular habits, timekeeping and punctuality (准时), and whether we like it or not, if we mean to make our way in society, we have to meet its demands.
57.The most widespread problem in applying oneself to study is ______.
A.changing from one subject to another
B.the failure to keep to a set timetable of work
C.the unwillingness to follow a systematic plan
D.working on a subject only when one feels like it
58.Which of the following is true?

B.Many students don’t like being told to study to a fixed timetable.
C.Most people of over 25 years of age don’t work to a set timetable.
D.Tough-minded people agree that good job is done naturally
59.The underlined part “as the fit takes them” in paragraph 4 means ______.
A.when they have the energy                   B.when they are in the mood
C.when they feel fit                                D.whey they find conditions are suitable

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some form---football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.

Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.

Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.

If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.

The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.

A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

1.Mountaineering is a sport, not a game because ________.

  A. it has man-made rules

  B. it is too dangerous for climbers

  C. it can’t bring people joy and leisure

  D. it is free for climbers to use their own methods

2.A mountain climber must be strong both mentally and physically because _______.

  A. there are no regular man-made rules for him to follow

  B. there is no teamwork and he has to depend on himself

  C. his component is not one or several people but nature
