Directions:  For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
A lecturer was giving a lecture to his students on stress management. He 21a glass of water and asked the audience, “How 22 do you think this glass of water is?”
The students’ answers 23 from 20g to 500g.
“It does not matter on the absolute 24 . It depends on how 25 you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for a(n) 26 , I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to 27  an ambulance. It is exactly the 28 weight, but the longer I hold it, the 29 it becomes.” The whole audience became silent, lost in thought.
After a moment, the lecturer continued, “ 30 we carry our burden all the time, 31 , we will not be able to carry on with the burden becoming increasingly heavier, 32 heavy for us to bear.
“What you have to do is to 33 the glass, rest for a while 34 holding it up again.”
As is shown in the story above, we have to put down the burden periodically, 35 we can be refreshed and are able to carry on.
So before you 36 home from work tonight, put the burden of 37 down. Don’t carry it back 38 . You can pick it up tomorrow.
Whatever burden you are having now on your 39 , let it down for a moment if you can.
Life is short,  40 it!

I moved to a new neighborhood two months ago. In the house with a large   16  across the road lived a taxi driver, a single parent with two school-age children. At the end of the day, he would   17  his taxi on the road. I  18  why he did not park it in the garage.
Then, one day I learnt that he had another car in his garage. In the afternoon he would come home  19  work, leave his taxi and go out for his   20 affairs in his other car, not in his taxi. I felt it was    21  .
I was curious to see his personal car but did not make it until I  22 to be outside one evening two weeks  23 , when the garage door was   24 and he drove out in his “own” car: a Rolls-Royce(劳斯莱斯)! It shook me completely   25  I realized what that meant. You see, he was a taxi driver. But  26 inside, he saw himself as something else: a Rolls-Royce owner and a(n)  27 . He drove others in his taxi but himself and his children in his Rolls-Royce. The world looked at his taxi and   28  him a taxi driver. But for him, a taxi was just something he drove for a living. Rolls-Royce was something he drove for a(n)  29 .
We go to bed every night and   30  every morning as parents or children, not as bankers, CEOs or professors. We go for a   31  as close friends or go for a vacation as a   32 . We love life as it is. Yet often, we base our entire happiness and success on how high we  33 the social ladder(阶梯)—how much bigger and better a  34 we have. And we ignore(忽视)our Rolls-Royce, by keeping it dusty in our garage. We should focus more on   35  we are than what we do!

My husband and I sat outside. A small child about three came up the street, accompanied by her mother. As she saw another girl a few feet away, she gave her admiring comment, “Mommy, I like her dress.” Her mom   21 , “Well, why don’t you go and tell her?”
The little girl walked   22  toward the girl wearing the pretty dress. The other one,
23  the same age, was standing with her   24  turned, alongside her parents. They had not heard the compliment (赞美). Receiving no answer, this little one   25 . My husband said to the other girl, “  26  wants to tell you something.” As she turned around, connection was made. Once again, the little one   27  “I like your dress,” and upon hearing those words, the other one gave her a big smile and excitedly   28  “Look, it’s a spinning (旋转) dress!”, at which moment she began to spin in  29. Both of them smiled widely.
Now, the one stopped spinning and said, “It’s my favorite dress and I have (a)   30  that match!” She   31  running toward a stroller (婴儿车) parked nearby.
The mom and the daughter started to   32  down the street,   33  the encounter (邂逅) had ended. Moments later, the “spinning dress girl” reappeared, shoes in hand,   34  her new friend who had seemingly disappeared. Now, an elderly couple, seated on a bench, had obviously been  35  of all this. The man   36  the child, saying, “There’s someone coming behind you.” Then we saw one showed and the other   37  the beautiful shoes.
If you can make a   38  better, do it. I have no idea how many others that evening might have   39  this act, hoping to help good things to happen. But such brief moments,  40  together, make up what might very well be the important times in our lives.

The Colors of Friendship
Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel. Green said, “Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animals would __31__ ."
Blue interrupted, “You only think about the   32  , but consider the sky and the sea.   33__ the water that is the basis of life and drawn up by the clouds from the deep sea. Without my peace, you would all be   34  .
Yellow laughed, “ You are all so serious. I bring laughter, fun, and  35   into the world.”
Orange started next to blow her trumpet, “ I am the color of health and strength. I may be  _36  , but I am priceless for I serve the needs of human life. When I fill the sky at sunrise or   _37  , my beauty is so striking that no one gives another  38  to any of you.
Red could stand it  39   and he shouted out, “I am the ruler of all of you. I am the color of danger and bravery. I am willing to   40_  truth. I am also the color of passion and of love.”
Then came Purple and Indigo.
The colors went on boasting(自夸), each convinced of his or her won superiority(优越). Their _41   became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightning thunder. Rain started to pour down   42  . The colors crouched (蜷缩)down   43  , drawing close to one another for comfort.
In the midst of the shout, rain began to speak, “You foolish colors, fight  44   yourselves, each trying to dominate(统治)  45  . Don’t you know that you were each made for a special purpose,   46   and different? Join hands with one  47   and come to me.”
Doing as they were told, the colors   48   and joined hands. They formed a colorful rainbow. From then on, whenever a good  49   washes the world, a rainbow appears in the sky. They remember to___50__ one another.

A group of graduates got together to visit their old university professor.
The conversation soon turned into complaints about  26  in work and life. To offer his guests coffee, the  27 went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of  28  — porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some  29  , some expensive, some delicate — telling them to help themselves to the  30 .
When all the students  31  a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, "If you have  32  , all the nice-looking expensive cups have been taken up,  33 the plain and cheap ones. While it is  34  for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the  35 of your problems and stress. "
"Be assured that the cup itself adds no  36  to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even  37 what we drink. "
"What all of you really want is coffee,  38  the cup, but you  39  went for the best cups … And then you began  40 each other's cups. "
"Now consider  41 : Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain  42 , and the type of cup we have does not determine, nor  43 the quality of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we  44 to enjoy the coffee. Fully appreciate the coffee, not the cups! Don't let the cups   45 you ... enjoy the coffee instead. "
