The words “timetable” and  “schedule” make most final year students want to eat their own vomit(呕吐物). Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that final year students must develop a timetable. If you don’t have a schedule or plan for studying ,you will have no way of allocating your valuable time when the unexpected arises. A well-thought-out timetable can be a lifesaver . It is up to you to learn how to develop a schedule that meets your needs .Change it if necessary ,but most important ,follow it . All timetables should be made with the idea that they can be changed. A good one will keep you from wandering off course.

A good timetable should make every hour count—every class ,social event and other activity you engage in .You must focus on the other “free time” available and how you will use it .Make a weekly schedule and divided each day into one-hour increments .Indicate times for classes ,socializing ,and work time. Also block off a period for sleeping every day. In the precious hours left over ,plan time for study .This gives you a rough road map of the time available. Of course ,you can change your schedule as circumstances need.

The timetable you develop should guide you in how to distribute the available time in the most productive manner .Sticking to your schedule can be tough ,but don’t dribble away valuable time. Avoiding study is the easiest thing in the world .It is up to you to follow the schedule you’ve prepared .A good deal of your success in high school and with any future study depends on this simple truth.

Remember ,there is a learning curve. You learn the most in the first 30 minutes of study; after that ,it progressively deteriorates(减弱). After four or five hours of studying the same material in the same way, you are learning virtually nothing. The solution is to keep switching subjects and study styles.

64.What is the best title of the passage?

A.it can be changed                                 B.it is flexible

C.it is of many periods                            D.it can save our time

Professor Barry Wellman of the University of Toronto in Canada has invented a term to describe the way many North Americans interact (互动) these days. The term is “networked individualism”. This concept is not easy to understand because the words seem to have opposite meanings. How can we be individuals (个体) and be networked at the same time? You need other people for networks.

Here is what Professor Wellman means. Before the invention of the Internet and e-mail, our social networks included live interactions with relatives, neighbors, and friends. Some of the interaction was by phone, but it was still voice to voice, person to person, in real time.

A recent research study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project showed that for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replaced this person-to- person interaction. However, a lot of people interviewed for the Pew study say that’s a good thing. Why?

In the past, many people were worried that the Internet isolated (孤立) us and caused us to spend too much time in the imaginary world of the computer. But the Pew study discovered that the opposite is true. The Internet connects us with more real people than expected — helpful people who can give advice on careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a school or college. About 60 million Americans told Pew that the Internet plays an important role in helping them make major life decisions.

Thanks to the computer, we are able to be alone and together with other people — at the same time!

60. The underlined phrase “networked individualism” probably means that by using computers people ________.

   A. stick to their own ways no matter what other people say

   B. have the rights and freedom to do things of their own interest

   C. do things in their own ways and express opinions different from other people

   D. are able to keep to themselves but at the same time reach out to other people

61. According to the Pew study, what do many people rely on to make major life decisions?

   A. Networks.            B. Friends.               C. Phones.               D. Parents.

62. It can be inferred from the Pew study that _______.

   A. people have been separated from each other by using computers

   B. the Internet makes people waste a lot of time and feel very lonely

   C. the Internet has become a tool for a new kind of social communication

   D. a lot of people regard the person-to-person communication as a good thing

63. Which would be the best title for this passage?

   A. We’re Alone on the Internet.

   B. We’re Communicating on the Internet.

   C. We’re Alone Together on the Internet.

   D. We’re in the Imaginary World of the Internet.

In today's fast paced, high stress world people are working longer hours than ever, and often exhaust themselves at day's end in front of the television to relax enough to begin again in the morning. However, television watching, for most people, does not really lower stress.Studies show that TV viewing more than an hour or so actually creates stress and, especially in women, may lead to the blues. Most individuals are unaware that doing some exercise after work makes them more energetic since it increases energy levels.

Wise use of free time does not mean getting an advanced degree, although the mental encouragement gained through education is unbeatable in keeping your mind active.Learning new things nearly always adds a spark to your daily life, especially if it is a favorite topic, such as sport, fashion, or art. Also, look through your bookstore or library to find books on your interests.Try to replace a half hour TV watching with reading.

It is reported that in the United States recently, many individuals have as few as two good friends.Long work hours and car commute act to separate people from each other. This separation is deadly.Find ways to meet people at the end of the day and on weekends.Often this can be best done by combining activities, such as by joining a walking group to get both exercise and companionship.Taking a class will lift your spirits and allow you to meet others with similar interests.Hobbies are great for reducing stress and provide another opportunity for social interaction.

Using your free time to aid your health may include these elements and many more, such as going to concerts and spending time with family.Overall, the key is to spend less free time being passive. The best ways to use free time are to be mentally and physically active, spend some time outdoors, and interact with other people on a regular basis.

45.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Watching television may cause women to feel depressed.

B.Finding interests and hobbies in common means taking a class.

C.Going to concerts is the best way to make you mentally active.

D.Getting an advanced degree in education always lights up your life.

46.What does the underlined word "commute" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

Bikaner 13/1/2007

Dear Youming,

Have arrived in Bikaner leaving Delhi behind us. Unfortunately there just wasn’t enough time to see everything in only four days. Outside Bikaner’s city walls are miles of desert wilderness. Tomorrow I look forward to exploring the wall itself. The sandstone architecture is said to be incredible. We are also going to take a camel ride through some of the desert. Can you picture me on a camel? I’ll make sure that I have lots of photographs taken. After three days here the next stop is Jaipur.

Love,

Lisa

Delhi 8/1/2007

Dear Mum and Dad,

We have just arrived in India and are in the bustling and exciting city of Delhi. This morning we visited the Red Fort. There we found magnificent palaces, mosques and splendid buildings. I could have spent hours there. This afternoon, amongst other things, we visited the India Gate---a memorial for Indian soldiers lost at war earlier this century. The gates were the largest I have ever seen.

Wish you were here,

Lisa

Dear Jinao,

So far so good. Once we arrived in Agra, we went straight to the Taj Mahal. I have never seen anything so wonderful. They said that it would look something like Humuyan’s Tomb(Delhi)and it does! There really is nothing more amazing than the brilliant white of the Taj shimmering in the daylight. Apparently the pollution poses a real threat to it. We really covered a great deal in three days here.

It’s been an amazing experience and I’m sorry that we’ll be flying home this evening.

Bye for now.

Lisa

Americans are pound of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?

Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian(百姓的)clothes.People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes.Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity(身份)than to step out of uniform?

Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible(可减税的).They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes.

Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them.Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.

In the past, young people in Japan were expected to take on responsibilities to support their parents and grandparents. Now they expect to be supported well into young adulthood. The “new breed”, born since the 1960s, have never known anything but richness. Youth are seen as resistant to entering society as mature adults, to becoming social citizens. Once the great objective of reconstruction after the Second World War was accomplished, a new generation lost the motivating power that had united the nation together.

Japan’s birth rate has been falling rapidly, partly because of economic decline, and the job and financial insecurity that it has caused. In 1999, the figure was 1.38 children per woman, the lowest ever recorded. At the same time, youth crime, although still especially low by western standards, rose to its highest level since record – keeping began 32 years ago. Likewise, the proportion of students dropping out before graduating, at 2.5% also very low by western standards, has never the less been rising.

Entrepreneurial(企业家的) role models are few and far between. Bill Gates is often mentioned, but a foreign model can only have so much influence. The problem is that Japanese culture discourages people from revealing details of personal life, including such difficult or painful experience as starting a company. In the past, successful companies such as Honda or Hitachi provided role models of a sort. But today they have been faded by the downturn, and few others have risen to take their place.

By the same reason, young people often feel isolated from their fathers, who worked too hard at their jobs to establish much of a relationship with their children. “The one thing they’re sure of is that they don’t want to be like their fathers. And the girls don’t want to be with boys who are like their fathers, so the boys are sure not to be,” says Professor Morishima.

68.According to the passage, young people were formerly expected to _________.

A. enter society before adulthood   B. hold together

C. work hard and support their families                 D. study hard and find a good job

69.The author takes the two examples of the youth crime and students’ drop – out rates to show __________.

A. Japanese youth are overburdened

B. the educational system in Japan is not working

C. public security and order in Japan are bad

D. young people in Japan have lower standards than previously

70.Today, entrepreneurial models are rarely found in Japan because _________.

A. Japanese culture discourages people talking about how to start a company

B. western models are considered to be better

C. people lack experience in starting up complaints

D. the “new breed” don’t want to work hard

71.The passage mainly discusses _________.

A. the decline of the Japanese economy

B. the great change of the ethnical and value concept of youth in Japan.

C. the existence of generation gap between young people and their parents

D. the increase in birth rates in Japan.

It was Friday, the day of the field trip on which Miss Joan would take her class to pick apples.

Miss Joan enjoyed picking apples with her students. She smiled as she led her students to the bus that would take them to the Greenly Apple Orchard(果园).

The bus ride was bumpy(颠簸的) and the kids were a little noisy, but still Miss Joan was smiling.

The bus stopped in front of the Greenly Apple Orchard and the class got off quickly and quietly. Miss Joan made sure everyone was there. “What a glorious, sunny, apple picking day,” Miss Joan announced with her grandest smile.

Mr. Greenly was there to greet them. “Let’s see, there are eighteen children and two adults at three dollars each. That will be sixty dollars, please.”

Miss Joan held up the brochure in her hand. “It says that the price is two dollars each,” she pointed out. “That’s what I collected from everyone.”

“We’ve had to raise the price,” Mr. Greenly stated.

“You sent me this brochure after we made our reservation,” Miss Joan complained, “and it says two dollars!”

“Miss Joan, if you look at the bottom of this brochure,” Mr. Greenly said, “you’ll notice very important statement.”

Sure enough, in very tiny letters, it said, “Prices are subject to change without notice.”

Miss Joan was determined to keep her good mood. She took a twenty dollars bill out of her own purse and handed it to Mr. Greenly with the forty dollars she had in an envelope.

“Now children, do you all have your baskets?” Miss Joan called out. “Remember, each of you can pick as many apples as possible.”

Mr. Greenly said, “You can’t pick as many apples as possible.”

“I beg your pardon!” Miss Joan was not smiling now. “The brochure says, ‘ALL YOU CAN PICK’!”

Mr. Greenly pointed to the tiniest letters Miss Joan had ever almost seen. It also says, “Terms(条款) and conditions of group reservations are subject to change without notice.”

Miss Joan’s good mood was now history. She didn’t want to set a bad example for her students, so she said in a calm and quiet voice, “We’re going home, give me our money back, please.”

60. The phrase“subject to change without notice” suggests________.

A. Mr. Greenly could change the terms at will

B. the customers should read the brochure carefully

C. Mr. Greenly could determine what apples to be picked

D. the customers should be informed beforehand

61. The students could not pick as many apples as they would like because________.

A. they were children                 B. there were not enough apples

C. they had made a group reservation   D. they would eat up too many apples

62.“Miss Joan’s good mood was now history” (the last paragraph) means ________.

   C. Miss Joan taught her students the history of the orchard

   D. Miss Joan was good at concealing her feelings

63. What can we learn about Miss Joan from the story?
