题目内容

Dear Daughter,
As we drove off from Columbia, I wanted to write to tell you all that is on my mind. First, I want to tell you how proud we are. Getting into Columbia is a real testament (证明) of what a great well-rounded student you are. You should be as proud of yourself as we are.
Your college years will be the most important of your life. It is in college that you will discover what learning is about. This will be the period when you go from teacher taught to master inspired, after which you must become a self-learner. So do take each subject seriously, and even if what you learn is of no practical use in real life, the learning skills you get will be something you will value forever.
Follow your passion in college. Take courses you think you will enjoy, don't be bothered by what others think or say, but make up your own mind. Most importantly, make true friends and be happy. Don't worry about their hobbies, grades, looks, or even personalities.
Start planning early what you'd like to do. Where would you like to live? What would you like to learn? I think your plan to study fashion is good, and you should decide where you want to be, and get onto the right courses. I will always be there for you, but the time has come for you to be in the driver's seat-this is your life, and you need to be in control. Being in control feels great. Try it, and you'll love it!
So please treasure your college years - make the best use of your free time, become an independent thinker in control of your destiny, and learn through your successes and challenges.
May your years at Columbia be the happiest of your life, and may you grow into just what you dream to be.

About fifty years ago, when television first came out, people thought that radio was no longer useful. Television has both sounds and images(影像). It is much more real and interesting to watch television than to listen to the radio.
However, fifty years later radio is still very popular and it will be here for a long time. One reason is that we don’t need to see an image when we listen to the music on the radio. In fact, listening with your eyes closed is the best way to listen to a piece of music. You can imagine yourself on a sandy beach or up high on a mountain. In other words, you can create your own images. Moreover, while listening to the radio, you don’t have to take your eyes off your work. For example, you can listen to the radio and drive at the same time. Or you can read a book and listen to the radio. Television, on the other hand, doesn’t have this advantage.
A radio is much smaller than a television. You can take a radio anywhere and turn it on anytime you want. In a quiet place you can use headphones to listen to the news or music on the radio. In this way you won’t disturb anybody.
Moreover, a radio is much cheaper than a television. For less than $ 20 you can buy a small radio and have fun with it.

Children today would rather toy with new technologies. The role of children has changed as well as that of teens. The world has truly evolved (进化)throughout the years.
Today,a typical day in the life of a five year old is entirely different from what it once was. A few decades ago children used to work. They did the kind of work parents do today. Today there are shows on which children are putting pounds of makeup on and have flashing things all over their bodies. This makes a child want to paper over all of their imperfections. They think they have to look perfect all the time.
Teens have changed as well. My grandma got married when she was thirteen. Girls who had an arranged marriage had no time to play because they were expected to cook, clean, take care of the kids, and do housework every single day. Today,we go to school every morning, maybe participate in some after-school activities, and possibly go to work for extra cash. Then we go home and do homework, and eat. After all of this we have to find the time to socialize by texting, talking on the phone, or logging on to social networking sites. We enjoy ourselves a lot.
The generation before us complains about how they did not have the things we have now. They say we are not appreciative and do not value life or just do not care about our futures anymore. Let's make a change! The youth have the power to work on whatever they believe in and make a difference in the world. Take advantage of your resources. It is never too late to make a positive change in our world.

The landlady started to pull the nails out with a tool. After the nails were   49 , the walls were left with countless holes. Suddenly, she felt heartbroken as if she were   50  nonstop through these holes.
She   51  to her feet and exclaimed, “Stop removing the nails! We will rent the house   52  we buy our own!” He gazed at her surprised, and then turned round, tears over his cheek.

When I was a little girl, I found love in a box all because of a class assignment. On a Friday night I   36  at dinner table, “My teacher said we have to bring a box, a special box, for our valentines (情人节) on Monday”.
Mother said, “We’ll see,” and she continued eating.
What did “We’ll see” mean? I had to have that box   37  my second grade Valentine’s Day would be a disaster. Maybe they didn’t love me enough to help me with my   38 .
All Saturday I waited   39  and with Sunday arriving, my concern increased, but I   40  an enquiry(询问)about the box might   41  anger or loud voice, for in my house children only asked once. More than that   42  trouble.
Late Sunday afternoon, my father called me into the kitchen. The table was covered with colorful   43  of different kinds. A (n)   44  shoebox rested on top of it.   45  flooded through me when Daddy said, “Let’s get started   46  your project.”
In the next hour my father   47  the shoebox into impressive valentine box. Colorful paper covered the ugly cardboard with red hearts   48  to what I considered all the right places. He sang while he worked. When he finished, he was so delighted that a   49 smile spread over his face. “What do you think of that?” he asked.I answered him with a hug.
But inside,   50  danced all the way to my heart. It was the first time that my father devoted so much   51  to me, for his world consisted of work only.
The holiday party arrived, and my classmates put cards, and presents into the valentine boxes. Laughter filled our classroom until dismissal time   52 .
On the way home, I held out my valentine box for the world to   53 . The love that filled it meant more to me than all the valentines inside. The valentine box became a symbol of his love that   54  through decades of other Valentine’s Days. He gave me other gifts through the years, but none   55  compared with the love I felt within the limits of the old, empty shoebox.

One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would   36  the peace and quiet, watch the water rush   37  and listen to the singing of birds and the rustling of   38  in the trees.I would also watch the bamboo trees   39  under pressure from the wind and watch them   40  gracefully to their original position after the wind had   41  .
When I think about the bamboo tree's ability to bounce back to its original position, the word "resilience" comes to mind. When used in   42  to a person, this word means the ability to readily   43  from shock, depression or any other situation that stretches the limits of a person's   44  .
Have you ever felt like you are at your   45  point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.
During the   46  you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally drained(枯竭),   47  exhausted and you most likely stood   48   physical symptoms.
Life is a   49  of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy   50   that take you close to your breaking point, bend,   51  don't break.Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.
A measure of hope will take you   52  the unpleasant ordeal (考验).With   53   for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be.The unpleasant ordeal may be easier to   54  if the final result is worth having.
If life gets   55  and you are at your breaking point, show resilience.Like the bamboo tree, bend, but don't break!

One cold night,I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home around one o’clock in the morning after a    26   practice at the theatre. With the opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines by heart.I was having    27   handling my part-time job at the bank in the daytime and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked I thought seriously about    28    both acting and San Francisco.I had    29  too much of city life.
As 1 walked down the    30    streets under the tall buildings,I felt very small and cold, so I began    31   both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers.Very few people were still out    32   a few homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my    33  , I heard a sound behind me. I    34 quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me    35   , so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I    36    what the noise had been. It  had been my wallet    37  to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired any more.I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise.Although I searched the sidewalk    38   for 15 minutes,my wallet was   39 to be found.
Just as 1 was about to quit the    40  , I heard the garbage truck stop to the sidewalk next to   41 .When a voice came from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?”I thought I was   42 .How could this man know my name? The door opened and out jumped a small blonde man with an amused look in his eyes, “Is this   43  you’re looking for?” He asked, holding up something like a wallet.
It was already 3 am. by the time I got into bed. I couldn’t get much sleep, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some    44  of city life. I realized the city couldn’t be a bad place    45   people were willing to help each other.

This week was busier than usual, and I was very tired today. All I wanted to do was to go home and enjoy a bowl of good hot soup.
But when I saw my daughter’s car, I knew that it was Bryan’s night. Since his parents separated, I had tried to have my six-year-old grandson spend a few hours with me at least once a week. I had always tried to make it a special time for him. We did many interesting things; Bryan loved all these activities, and so did I. But today I had to give up our evening. I said how tired I was feeling. “Bryan, I’m sorry. Tonight I don’t feel like having fun or playing games. We’ll have our night together some other time.” I saw the sadness in Bryan’s eyes. He said, “I like soup, Grandma.” I knew he meant “Please don’t send me away. Please let me stay.” I saw the shadow (阴影) in Bryan’s eyes. Something else was changing. Maybe he thought I wouldn’t want to have him come any more — not tonight, not next week, not ever. Finally, I said OK. I was glad to see his eyes light up. After I put the soup on the stove (炉子) and turned on the TV, I fell asleep.
When I woke up, there was a coat over my legs, and the soup was gone. Bryan was on the floor, reading a coloring book and watching a television show at the same time. The poor boy must have been so bored (烦躁的)! When he found I was awake, he ran over and gave me a big hug. “I love you, Grandma,” he said. “Haven’t we had a nice time together?” His big smile and happy eyes told me that this time he meant exactly what he was saying. That was the keyword — together. We had done nothing exciting or special. But we were together.
