Recently I attended a small exclusive (独有的) and exclusively female financial (财政的) planning seminar (研讨会). I met so many bright independent women doing interesting things in Parliament (英国国会), in business and in the professions (职业) that I was determined to turn over a new leaf and take control of my financial affairs. This, I was assured (确信) , would fill me with a new confidence. I would feel better.

My problem is Harold, the man-in-my-life. He thinks a sensible (合理的) distribution (分配) of responsibilities is when each partner works at what he or she does best. He thinks we are a liberated couple, likes our tree the way it is, and doesn’t see the need for new leaves. I watched as he sewed on a shirt button last night and thought, what a hypocrite (伪君子) he is. He’s quite comfortable sewing on the button, quite happy barefoot in the kitchen, happy, to see me lifting loads of manure to spread on our patch (小块土地) or coping with the cat’s rat under our dining room table. But he is an old fashioned MCP(male chauvinist pig) when it comes to money.

“I will probably only be away three weeks, but I have arranged for Erhardt to pay any bills,” be said, and I froze. Erhardt is out lawyer and friend, but…“I am quite capable of paying our bills when you are away,” I said.

“Do not be childish. Erhardt and I share a mailbox. He fetches his mail, so he can fetch ours and pay the bills. Easy.”

“You mean I am not to worry my pretty little head about that,” I said. He beamed (微笑) and said, “Exactly,”missing the point entirely.

Jack walked up to the woman and said, "Hello, Sue, how are you? May I sit and talk with you for a while?" "Of course, please sit down," Sue said. Jack sat down next to Sue on the bench, and they talked quietly together. The dog continued to look up at Sue, as if waiting to be fed.
"That's a nice dog, isn't he?" Jack said, pointing at the animal.
"Yes, he is. He's handsome. He's a bit of a mixture, but that's not a bad thing. He's strong and healthy."
"And hungry, "Jack said." He hasn't taken his eyes off you. He thinks you've got some food for him."
"That's true, "Sue said." But I haven't."
They both laughed and then Jack said, "Does your dog bite?"
"No, "Sue said, "He's never bitten anyone. He's always gentle and friendly."
Hearing this, Jack decided to hold out his hand and touched the animal's head. Suddenly it jumped up and bit him.

Sue replied in surprise, "Yeah, I did. But this is not my dog. My dog's at home."
