I just sat still and didn't say anything while my husband and I were informed that two-year-old Kristi was retarded (智力迟顿的) .

When Kristi was old enough to attend school,we enrolled her in our neighborhood school's kindergarten at age seven. However, positive things began to happen to Kristi in her school, and to her schoolmates, too. When boasting (自夸) of their own accomplishments,Kristi's classmates always praised her as well; "Kristi got all her spelling words right today." No one added that her spelling list was easier than anyone else's.

Dunng Kristi's second year in school, there was a competition based on the year's music and physical education activities. Kristi was far behind in both music and motor coordination (运动协调) .My husband and I feared the day as well.

On the day of the program,Kristi pretended to be sick. Desperately I wanted to keep her home. But at last I pushed her onto the school bus.

Just as I had forced my daughter to go to school, now I forced myself to go to the program. When it was time for Kristi' s group to perform, I knew why Kristi had been worried. Her class was divided into relay teams. With her limp and slow, clumsy reactions, she would surely hold up her team.

The performance went surprisingly well, until it was time for the gunnysack (黄麻袋) race. Now each child had to climb into a sack from a standing position, jump to a goal line, return and climb out of the sack.

Kristi stood near the end of her line of players, looking nervous.

But as Kristi's turn to participate neared,a change took place in her team. The tallest boy in the line stepped behind Kristi and placed his hands on her waist. Two other boys stood a little ahead of her. The moment the player in front of Kristi stepped from the sack, those two boys grabbed the sack and held it open while the tall boy lifted Kristi and dropped her neatly into it. A girl in front of Kristi took her hand and supported her briefly until Kristi gained her balance. Then off she jumped, smiling and proud.

In the cheers of teachers, schoolmates and parents,I secretly thanked God for the warm, understanding people in life who make it possible for my disabled daughter to be like her fellow human beings.

Rx Laughter is a nonprofit international charity. We research and implement (carry out) initiatives (计划,措施) that use comedy and humor in the most helpful and sensitive ways possible. Our primary focus is on helping people of all ages who are suffering from very serious physical and emotional traumas (创伤) .

Specifically,we believe that very funny standup comedy, movies and TV programs can be a very important, helpful part of medical, psychotherapeutic (心理疗法的) ,educational and overall preventive health care from childhood through old age. We do this in uniquelydesigned ways, working closely with worldrenowned experts in the field of health care at major medical institutes internationally. Rx Laughter then puts these findings into practical usage. Briefly:

Medical:Through our collaborative projects with major medical institutes such as the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center, the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit at the Mattel Children's Hospital? UCLA and The National Cancer Hospital & Adult Hospice in Thailand,we carefully design and implement research initiatives so that patients can be in less pain and have less fear, anxiety & depression―emotions that can overwhelm patients & their families during times of crisis.

Educational:Led by the national Comedy SportzLA teams, this comedy show at their theater gives patients an opportunity for renewed selfconfidence,to learn a new skill, and to feel like a whole person again, not "a medical condition".

Overall Preventive Care: With the rising costs of medical care and health insurance, preventive health care is more important than ever. If comedy viewing can keep us emotionally and physically healthier and help us deal with times of crisis in our lives, then we will have found a very potent, inexpensive prescription for healthy living.

Thus,we encourage comedy, music and other forms of upbeat entertainment for patients and their support system to enjoy together, and we research how best to do this,so that comedy shows can be "prescribed" as a proven benefit to maintaining excellent health.

Thank you for your interest in our charity.

Coming home from school that dark winter day so long ago,I was filled with excitement of having the weekend off. But I was 1        into stillness by what I saw. Mother, seated at the far end of the sofa,2       ,with the secondhand green typewriter on the table. She told me that she couldn't type fast and then she was out of work. My shock and embarrassment at finding mother in tears was a perfect 3        of how little I understood the pressures on her. Sitting beside her on the sofa,I began very 4        to understand. "I guess we all have to 5        sometime," mother said quietly. I could 6        her pain and the tension of holding back the strong feelings that were interrupted by my arrival. Suddenly, something inside me 7      I reached out and 8        my arms around her. She broke then. She put her face 9        my shoulder and sobbed. I held her 10        and didn't try to talk. I knew I was doing what I should, what I could 11        it was enough. In that moment, feeling mother's 12        racked with feelings,I understood for the first time her being so easy to 13       . She was still my mother, yet she was something 14 :a person like me,capable of fear and 15        and failure. I could feel her pain as she must have felt mine on a thousand occasions when I had sought 16        in her arms.

A week later mother took a job selling dry goods at half the salary the radio station had 17       . "It's a job I can do," she said simply. But the evening 18        on the old green typewriter continued. I had a very 19        feeling now when I passed her door at night and heard her typping 20        the paper. I knew there was something more going on in there than a woman learning to type.
