Perhaps the most famous theory, the study of body movement, was suggested by Professor Ray Birdwhistell. He believes that physical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learn our looks—we are not born with them. A baby has generally informed face features. A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set the eyebrows by looking at those around-family and friends. This helps explain why the people of some areas of the United States look so much alike, new Englanders or Southerners have certain common face features that cannot be explained by genetics(遗传学). The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birth, it is learned after. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formed until well after new teeth are set. For many, this can be well into grown-ups. A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look alike. We learn our looks from those around us. This is perhaps why in a single country area where people smile more than those in other areas. In the United States, for example, the South is the part of the country where the people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York State still less. Many southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partly because people on Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street in Atlanta. Georgia. People in Atlanta, Georgia. People in largely populated areas also smile and greet each other in public less than people in small towns do.

When I was in high school, I had a recurring(反复的) dream of my teeth falling out. I dreamt about my teeth just about every night for at least three weeks. Sometimes they would fall out one at a time, sometimes all at once. I became terrified that my dreams meant I would actually lose my teeth. Nine years later and about a million trips to the dreams, I still have a full set of teeth, but I’ve learned that when we’re experiencing stress in our lives, it tends to show up in our dreams as well.

Miller says losing teeth indicates burdens that crush your pride. If your teeth are knocked out, you’ll have sudden misfortune. Other explanations for dreams about lost teeth are that the dreamer is feeling powerless in life and may be in a transitional(过度的) period from one situation of life to another. Some experts believe that dreams of losing teeth today show we’re just as insecure and uncertain as we were in childhood.

When I dreamt about my teeth back in high school, I was trying to choose a college— a stressful decision. The dreams resurfaced when college graduation rolled around four years later and I’m sure they’ll start again when I graduate.

A little of stress in our everyday lives is normal. But sometimes it becomes such a regular occurrence in our lives that it influences our dreams and causes us to lose valuable sleep. Understanding our dreams is key to identifying and ending stress in our waking hours and restoring peace to our nighttime hours.

Two scientists in California now think they can find out a person’s real age.Jeffery Bada and Patricia Masters do chemical tests on teeth. When we are born the amino acids(氨基酸)in our teeth are in one form. Then,as we grow older these amino acids change into a second form.Every year, one thousandth of the amino acids changed. So,by testing just one tooth and counting the number of amino acids in each form,Bada and Masters can work out a person’s age. They tested a tooth from the body of an Eskimo(爱斯基摩人)woman who died 1 600 years ago. From the appearance of her body, she was between 50 and 60 years old when she died. The tooth test put her age at 53.Then the Russian Government sent them a tooth from an old man in Georgia. The tooth said she was 99.Her real age was 96.The Russians are now hoping to send more teeth, from the very old people without birth certificates(出生证明书).But there are problems. Some of the centenarians(百岁老人)have lost all their teeth. The others want to keep their teeth until they drop out naturally. So the Russian Government and the American scientists have to wait and hope.

D.Scientists now can tell how long a person will live by testing his teeth.

63.Why are the two scientists asked to find out some very old Russians’ age?

A.Because the Government wants to know how long these old people can live.

B.Because they have no birth certificates.

C.Because people who have tooth problems tend to live longer.

D.Because the Government wants to know their dates of birth and death.

64.In order to find out the exact age of some people over 100,both the Russian Government and American scientists_______.

A.should wait until all of them die

We’ve talked about snails (蜗牛) and their slow move. But much of the time snails don’t move at all. They are in their shells (壳) —sleeping.
Hot sun will dry out a snail’s body. So at the least sign of hot sun, a snail draws its body into his shell. A snail will die in a heavy rain. So when it rains, a snail does the same thing, too. A snail can sleep for as long as it needs to. It spends all  the winter months in its shell, asleep.
In the spring the snail wakes up. Its body, about three inches long, comes out from the shell. When hungry, the snail  looks for food. Its eyes, at the end of the top feelers (触角), are very weak. But its sense (感觉) of smell is very strong. It helps the snail to find food and the new greens.
A snail’s mouth is no bigger than the point of a pin (大头针). Yet it has 256,000 teeth! The teeth are very small, and you can’t see them. If you put a snail in a hard paper box, it will eat its way out! And if a snail wears out its teeth, it will grow new ones.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Dolphins are not fish; they’re mammals. They are warm-blooded like man and give birth to one baby called a calf at a time. At birth a calf is about 90—130cm long and grows to about 4m. They live up to 40 years. They are highly sociable animals.

Their teeth are interlocking rows of hooks, suitable for holding slippery fish. They eat fish whole starting with head first. When they go wild they keep their mouth open and sometimes keep it nodding to express their aggression. Greater aggression is shown by violent jaw clapping. Dolphins breathe through their blowhole(呼吸孔) located at the top of their head. The dolphin’s eyes produce a special slippery secretion(分泌物) which protects the eyes from foreign objects and water friction.

Dolphins use their powerful tail to move through the water. They also use their tail while hunting. They slap their tail rapidly when they get annoyed or when they want to indicate the sign of danger to alert other dolphins.

The dolphin’s skin is completely smooth allowing the dolphin to move easily through the water, and also reduce heat loss. Their skin may bear rake marks from other dolphin’s teeth during play or mating, and can easily become badly sunburned if they strand(搁浅).

Their bodies are very streamlined so they may swim at high speed through the water, and an example of this is their ears. Dolphin’s ears are barely noticeable marked only by a small hole just behind the eyes.

While sleeping, it shuts down only half of its brain, as its breathing is under voluntary control. Dolphins take short catnaps, floating just below the surface, and then slowly rising to breathe. Often dolphins are very active during night time, for some this is their main feeding time. Dolphins are able to dive to great depths, and also leap to great heights. They may leap to avoid predators or to show how powerful they are to females at mating time.
