Matthew Youlden speaks nine languages fluently and understands more than a dozen more. _____【1】_____ When I told Matthew how I’ve been working hard to only pick up a second language, he had the following advice for me.

Know why you are doing it

This might sound easy , but if you don’t have a good reason to learn a language, you are less likely to stay interested over the long-run._______ 2_______ Wanting to get to know a French person in his or her own language is another matter entirely. No matter what your reason is, once you’ve decided on a language, it’s important to carry out .

_______3______

Matthew learned several languages together with his twin brother Michael. They learned their first foreign language, Greek, when they were only eight years old! Even if you can’t get a sister or brother to join you on your language adventure, having any kind of partner will push both of you to always try just a little bit harder and stay with it.

Have fun with it

_____4______Think of some fun ways to practice your new language: make a radio play with a friend, draw a comic strip, write a poem, or simply talk to whomever you can. If you can’t find a way to have fun with the new language, chances are you aren’t following step four.

Act like a child

We learn by making mistakes. ___5___But as adults, mistakes become taboo(禁忌). Think how an adult is more likely to say, “I can’t”, rather than, “I haven’t learned that yet” (I can’t swim, I can’t drive, I can’t speak Spanish). When it comes to learning a language, admitting that you don’t know everything is the key to growth and freedom.

Forgiveness

To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.____ 【1】__

Try the following steps:

Calm yourself. ____2__ You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. ____3____ Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

___4___ If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself. ___5__ But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

A. Why should you forgive?

B. How should you start to forgive?

C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.

D. Try to see things from your offender’s angle.

E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.

F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.

G. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.

【题目】If you are a fruit grower — or would like to become one —join in Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in fact it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has become popular, events now last through most of October around Britain.

Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety(品种) of apples. To people who are used to the limited kinds of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite eye-opening to see some classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try.

There are also varieties developed to suit certain local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall in love with it.

At the apple events, you can also meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well entertained with apple-themed fun and games.

Apple days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, visit the National Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.

【1】What can people do at the apple events?

A. Attend experts’ lectures.

B. Visit fruit-loving families.

C. Taste many kinds of apples.

D. Plant fruit trees in an orchard.

【2】What can we learn about Decio?

A. It is a new variety.

B. It is rarely seen now.

C. It has a strange look.

D. It has a special taste.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. A clever idea. B. A selfish thought.

C. A great plan. D. A useless hope.

【题目】I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg last night, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I was clinching (紧握) my fists with impatience.

At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with the traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I approached the light, it turned red and I braked to stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for' the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.

I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being arrested, because there were obviously no police around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.

Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of an agreement we all have with each other. It's not only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.

It's amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it? And we do, too. Trust is our first tendency. We have to make a deliberate decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical. Those attitudes don't come naturally to us.

It's a very good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual trust, not distrust. This whole thing around us would fall apart if we didn't trust each other most of the time. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up; we deliver when we say we'll deliver; and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and when we don't do what we've promised, it's far from the normal. It happens often that we don't act in good faith and in a trustworthy manner, but we still consider it unusual, and we're angry or disappointed with those badly-behaved people. Anyway I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.

2The author stopped at the traffic light because .

A. there were passers-by crossing the road

B. some policemen were on duty just at that point

C. the trust between people influenced the author

D. there was potential danger

3What would happen if people didn't trust each other in most cases?

A. A11 the things would run normally.

B. The social system would be thrown into disorder.

C. The social traditions would be abandoned.

D. Strict rules and laws would be made.

4What is the theme of the passage?

A. Mutual Trust is the best policy.

B. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.

C. Actions speak louder than words.

D. Among the blind the one-eyed is the king.
