　　When we speak of a basic human need we mean something which is necessary to life, something we cannot possibly do without．Food is a basic human need．Without it we would starve to death; but even if we have plenty of food, but of the wrong kind, our bodies will suffer from a lack of the right food．This is known as malnutrition．

　　In primitive countries, people want only the foods which can be grown near their homes, whereas we eat foods which are often grown many thousands of miles away from our homes．Just think of the different types of meat we cat, beef mutton, pork, chicken, turkey, goose, and rabbit．We could manage on a diet of one kind of meat, but how monotonous it would become! 　　We can agree with primitive man that food is a basic need, but we differ：from him in our food wants because of．the wide variety of food we have available compared with him; we have a wider choice．Take fruit, for example, not only can we enjoy the fruits grown in this country, but because of modem methods of transport and food preservation, we can also enjoy the more exotic fruits from countries thousands of miles away, whereas primitive man, is limited in his choice to the kinds of fruit which actually grow where he lives．

　　However they differ in satisfying their hunger primitive and civilized men both experience the basic need for food．

　　The same is true of the second of our human needs．Clothing is necessary to regulate the heat of our bodies．Since we live：in a temperate climate we need more clothes than people living in tropic conditions．Likewise, our clothing needs to change with seasons．

　　Shelter, the third of our needs, depends upon the climate, the skill of the builder, one's social position, and the materials available．The simple shelter of the aboriginal would not do for US, and yet it satisfies his needs．The three bed roomed suburban house of the average family would not be grand enough for a rich family, and yet the modern house contains many of the material comforts which were denied to the kings and queens of old times．

A woman whose sports car was stolen with her dog in it put up notices all over the area that made it clear getting back her pet was more important than her cat．

     As my dad unwrapped the new bicycle helmet (头盔) that I got him for his birthday, I realized that a
number of people ride their bicycles every day without the protection of a helmet.
     Due to cold winters across the country, riding has become increasingly dangerous as many roads have
potholes and are torn-up (磨损的). Not everyone realizes that there are laws requiring the wearing of helmets
in many places.
     Where I live, there has been a law in place since October l, 1992 stating that cyclists of all ages are required

my dad and I go out cycling, the wearing of our helmets is not even a question. Regardless of age, everyone

     In their book Time to Eat the Dog: The Real Guide to Sustainable Living, Robert and Brenda Vale say
keeping a medium-sized dog has the same ecological impact as driving 10000 km a year in a 4.6 liter Land
Cruiser.
     "We're not actually saying it is time to eat the dog. We're just saying that we need to think about and
know the ecological impact of some of the things we do and that we take for granted."
     Constructing and driving the jeep for a year requires 0.41 hectares of land, while growing and
manufacturing a dog's food takes about O.84 hectares-or l.1 hectares in the case of a large dog such as a
German shepherd.
     Convincing flesh-eating cats and dogs to go vegetarian for the sake of the planet is a non-starter, the
Vales say. Instead they recommend keeping "greener", smaller, and more sustainable pets, such as goldfish,
chickens or rabbits.
     The book's playful title, and serious suggestion that pet animals may be usefully "recycled", by being eaten
by their owners or turned into pet food when they die, may not appeal to animal fans.
     Annoying as the idea may be, the question is valid given the planet's growing population and limited resource
s, Robert Vale said. 
     "Issues about sustainability are increasingly becoming things that are going to require us to make choices
which are as difficult as eating your dog. It's not just about changing your light bulbs or taking a cloth bag to
