New York is called The Big Apple可知是纽约被称为"大苹果",A、B、C三项都是洛杉矶的绰号,因此答案选D.
根据文章第四段中The American motion picture (电影) and television industries are based in Los Angeles. So it is not surprising that it is called The Entertainment Capital of the World可知美国的电影和电视产业植根于洛杉矶,因此它也被称为"世界娱乐之都",所以答案选D.
This means a place that is fun and not serious…
So is Pasadena, with its Rose Parade each New Year's Day可知A项正确;根据文章最后一段A good place for watching unusual-looking people is Venice,an area on the west side of Los Angeles.A system of waterways designed after the Italian city of Venice has been built there可知在洛杉矶也可以看到按照意大利城市威尼斯设计的一个水路系统,而不是到意大利去看,因此答案B是错误的. No trip to Los Angeles is complete without seeing the word"Hollywood"spelled out in huge letters on a hillside可知好莱坞很受人们欢迎,因此答案C正确. Many movie stars live in Los Angeles. The city is sometimes called Tinseltown. This nickname comes from the shiny, bright and often unreal nature of Hollywood and the movie industry可知D项正确,根据题干要求,因此答案选B.

13.I've often wondered if I might do more good as a travel agent rather than as a psychologist. It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have.
My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that. The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut in Iceland.I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks, smoky volcanoes, and lakes with floating icebergs.
The moment after we arrived, the weather turned extreme making visibility impossible. It snowed so much and the wind blew so hard that we couldn't leave the tiny hut.To stay warm,we walked around in circles much of the day inside the tiny hut.We tried to call for help but the radio did not work.Day after day,we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short. We got acute cabin fever (幽居病) and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside.Even when the weather finally broke, nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup.By the time the rescue team came to pull us out,we had all given up hope.
From then on,the world looks different to me,as does my life.It would have taken me years of psychotherapy to get to the same point.
Almost everyone has a story to tell, and interestingly, most of these experiences were not altogether pleasant at the time.In fact,it appears that the most constructive life-changing journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources, increase confidence, and solve problems in new ways.

11.The Touchstone
When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book; and so a poor man,who could read little, bought it for very little money.
The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum on which was written the secret of the"Touchstone"!The touchstone was a small pebble that could turn any common metal into pure gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it.But the secret was this:The real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles are cold.
So the man sold his few belongings, bought some simple supplies, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold,he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So,when he felt one that was cold,he threw it into the sea.He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone.Yet he went on and on this way.Pick up a pebble.Cold-throw it into the sea.Pick up another.Throw it into the sea.Pick up another.Throw it into the sea.The days continued over a long period if time.
One day, however, about mid-afternoon,he picked up a pebble and it was warm.He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done.He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea that when the one he wanted came along he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity.Unless we are cautious,it's easy to fail to recognize an opportunity when it is in hand and it's just as easy to throw it away.

12.In today's fiercely competitive business environment,companies need to communicate information concerning a whole range of issues in a clear and precise manner to their customers.This is particularly so in the case of companies which do business in areas such as manufacturing,information technology (IT),engineering products and services-companies whose products and services may not be understood by a customer not familiar with its technical aspects.
These communication materials are prepared in a company these days by"technical writers"-people who can effectively communicate to an intended audience.
Technical writing and writing text-books are poles apart.The former is aimed at those who do not have an in-depth knowledge about a product and therefore should be direct and easy to understand.Too many technical terms would only add to the confusion of the customer.Technical writers first need to understand the technical information themselves,before trying to communicate it in easier language to the customers.Even graduates of English literature are often found wanting when it comes to creative and effective writing.
This simply means that those with a Bachelor's degree in English Literature along with a  diploma/degree in Journalism and having a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) are ideal (理想的) candidates for being employed as technical writers.
A career in technical writing is seen as a good choice for women mainly because it is widely held that women are more gifted in creative writing than men and the job does not involve too much travelling or working at night.
28.What are"technical writers"supposed to do?A
A.To write about the company's products or services in clear,easy language.
B.To write about the company's products using correct technical terms.
C.To effectively communicate to an intended audience by writing letters.
D.To travel around to persuade people to buy the company's products or services.
29.Which of the following best explains the underlined word"wanting"in Paragraph 3?D
A.being needed.
B.wanting to write.
C.hoping to be employed.
D.lacking in ability.
30.What would happen if many technical terms are used in technical writing?C
A.It would sound too formal.
B.It would help engineers a lot.
C.It would confuse the customer.
D.It would produce a better effect.
31.Who would be the best candidate for a technical writer?B
A.A man with degrees in English literature and Journalism and a PGDCA.
B.A female with degrees in English literature and Journalism and a PGDCA.
C.A male graduate of English literature with a diploma in Journalism.
D.A woman with a degree in English literature along with a diploma in Journalism.
