happens every night and causes problems, then sleep disorder specialists suggest that parents spend a
week noting the time when sleepwalking tends to happen, and then gently wake the child about fifteen
minutes before this time. This will often break the cycle.
So what should you do if you find your relative sleepwalking? For a start, they are in such a deep sleep
that they will probably not notice you, even if you try to wake them. If you do succeed in walking them,
they will become distressed. Everyone has experienced that feeling of confusion when the alarm awakens
you from deep sleep, instead of the lighter sleep we are usually experiencing by the time our alarms
sound. I once had the shock of being woken by a crash and found myself in the kitchen, standing
barefoot and surrounded by broken glass. I'd tried to get a glass of water while sleepwalking, but like
most sleepwalkers I failed to turn on the light, and had smashed the glass against the tap.
Walking a sleepwalker will not cause them to have a heart attack, but the kindest thing to do is not try
to wake them at all. Lead them gently back to bed so that they do not hurt themselves. They will remain
deeply asleep, and it is likely that will not remember a thing in the morning.
B. Keep a record of the time when children wake up.
C. Take 15 minutes to wake children from sleepwalking.
D. Try some time to break the cycle of the sleepwalking.
B. do some cooking
C. feel lost
D. become relaxed
B. Try every means to wake him at once.
C. Leave your relative where he stays.
D. Send him to a specialist immediately.
B. Sleepwalking
C. Sleep Advice
D. Sleepwalkers

While everybody enjoys fresh cut flowers around his house, few people know how to keep them for as long as possible. This may be done by keeping in mind a few simple facts. The key to keeping fresh cut flower for a week or more without preservatives ( which contain biocides (杀虫剂) that kill bacterial and fungus) is to keep the water fresh and the stems free of air pockets so they can continue to draw up water. 2. ( ) An important thing to remember about cut flowers is that they are sensitive to temperature. For example, studies have shown that cut carnations retain their freshness eight times longer when kept at 12℃ than when kept at 26℃. Keeping freshly harvested flowered at the right temperatures is probably the most important aspect of flower care. 3. ( ) The process by which flowers consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, called respiration (呼吸), supplies the energy the flower needs to give the flower its shape and color. The making of seeds also depends on this energy. While all living things respire, flowers have a high level of respiration. A result of all this respiration is heat, and for flowers the level of heat relative to the mass of the flower is very high. Respiration also brings about the eventual death of the flower. Thus the greater the level of respiration, the sooner the flower dies. 4. ( ) How, then, to control the speed at which flowers die? By controlling respiration. How is respiration controlled? By controlling temperature, we know that respiration produces heat, but the reverse (反面) is also true. Thus by keeping low temperatures, respiration is reduced and the cut flower will age more slowly. 5. ( ) Another vital factor in keeping cut flowers is the quality of the water in which they are placed. Flowers find it difficult to "drink" water that is dirty or otherwise polluted. Even when water looks and smells clean, it almost certainly contains harmful substances that can endanger the flowers. To rid the water of these unwanted substances, chlorine bleach (含氯漂白剂) can be used in small quantities. It is recommended that 15 drops of chlorine bleach be added to each liter of water. The water and solution (溶液) should also be replaced each day. |

| Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, 1 . Moreover, a great many relationships come under the general term "friendship". In all cases, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of closeness between them and the reasons for their interest in each other change greatly. At the beginning, much depends on how people meet, and on good first impressions. As we get to know people, 2 . Although these factors are not of the greatest importance, it is more difficult to have a good relationship with people when there is a big difference in age and background. Then, 3 . Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time looking at each other than ordinary friends. Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may give the wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty making friends. A friendly look with a wrong facial expression can turn into an unfriendly stare, and nervousness may be wrongly understood as unfriendliness. Some relationships are a result of argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have the same ideas and beliefs, the same opinions and interests. The more closely involved people become, the more they depend on each other. And 4 . Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for each other, to put up with annoying habits, and to accept differences in opinions. In contrast with marriage, 5 . But the support and understanding that results from shared experiences and affections does seem to create a close and lasting relationship. | |

| Telephone tips If the phone rings and someone speaks in English, don't be afraid to answer it! The fear of talking on the phone in a second language will disappear if you practice often. Here are a few tips for helping you improve your ability to answer a call in English. 1._______ Listening to someone speaking in a second language over the telephone can be very challenging because you cannot see the person you are trying to hear. However, it may be even more difficult for the person you are talking with to understand you. You may not realize that your pronunciation isn't clear because your teacher and fellow students know and understand you. Pay special attention to your weak areas of your pronunciation when you are on the phone. 2._________ Don't pretend to understand everything you hear over the telephone. Even native speakers ask each other to repeat and confirm information from time to time. This is especially important if you are taking a message for someone else. Learn the appropriate expressions that English speakers use when they don't hear something properly. Don't be afraid to remind the person to slow down more than once. Keep your telephone in an area that is away from other noise distractions such as a radio or television. 3. ________. There are many ways to get free telephone English practice. After business hours, you can call and listen to recorded messages. Write down what you hear the first time, and then call back and check if your notes are accurate. Make sure you have a pen handy so that you can repeat the information and check your comprehension. 4._________. The way that you speak to your best friend on the phone is very different from the way you should speak to someone in a business setting. Many speakers make the mistake of being too direct on the telephone. It is possible that the person on the other line will think that you are being rude on purpose if you don't use formal language in certain situations. Sometimes just one word such as could or may is necessary in order to sound polite. Take the time to learn how to answer the phone and say goodbye in a polite manner, as well as all the various ways one can start and end a conversation casually. Listening to someone on the telephone is like listening to a taped recording in class. The only difference is that you have to talk back! Follow the tips above and remember that practice makes perfect! |
